Vicks NyQuil Multi-Symptom Cold/Flu Relief- Original Flavor 10 Fl Oz Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)Like most other cold and allergy sufferers, I was miserable to find that Vicks reformulated Nyquil, my "go to" medication in the event of a bad cold, to remove pseudoephedrine, just so they could keep their product on the "over the counter" shelves. The new formula did not work for me at all. Worse, the packaging was practically identical to the original packaging, so it took me a while -- and $$$$ -- to realize that the REASON my beloved Nyquil wasn't working anymore was because the primary active ingredient had been removed. I was displeased, to say the least. And even more annoyed at the time to find that Vicks wasn't even OFFERING a version with the original formula that could be obtained from the pharmacist if you were willing to jump through the hoops of providing an ID and signing legal forms.
Thank you, Congress. I doubt taking effective cold meds away from non-junkies has done jack squat to solve the meth problem, but you sure have succeeded in making the rest of us miserable.
Anyway, I have another cold now, and went to my local pharmacy yesterday to show my ID and pick up some Drixoral -- only to find that since the last time I bought it, the company that makes it has taken it off the market to "reformulate" it, according to the pharmacist, since Drixoral sales had dropped so precipitously since it was removed from regular drugstore shelves and stuck behind the pharmacist's counter. Not AGAIN, I thought, and actually found myself wondering idly if I could get hold of some meth and back-formulate a cold medication that would WORK from it.
BUT THEN!!!! I happened to spy what looked like bottles of Nyquil on the shelves behind the pharmacy counter! Could it be, I thought, that Vicks had added psuedoephedrine back to their product and was making the "real" stuff available to its customers again? I asked the pharmacist, "Wait, is that REAL Nyquil? With pseudoephedrine?" She acknowledged that it was. It is "NyQuil-D." I promptly bought two bottles (all that I am allowed to buy at one time in CA).
I haven't compared the ingredients list on Nyquil D to the ingredients on the original Nyquil yet, but I can confirm that pseudoephedrine is back in at least this version. THANK GOODNESS. I will stand in line, miserable, sneezing, coughing, hacking, and passing out, to buy something that WORKS.
I don't know when Vicks started marketing the "-D" stuff. I'm surprised they didn't contact me and others who wrote angry letters to them when they first reformulated their product to let us know they were selling an effective remedy again... but never mind!
Pass on "regular" Nyquil. Ask your pharmacist for the "-D" version.
