This is probably the best planisphere I have (I have 3) and very usable. It is usable both as a desk top study/planning tool and also out in the field. The front side of the planisphere that contains the sky mask is more suited for indoors use. The color-coded stars and red constellation lines are impossible to see in the dark with a red flashlight. However, this side is eminently suitable as a desk top planning tool given the tremendous wealth of detail and info.
The back side of the planisphere is unmasked and contains a very detailed sky map mainly for Norhern hemisphere users. This is blue-tone printed and is usable in the dark and the details show up well under a red flash light. An extra bonus are detailed markings of double stars, variable stars, all the Messier objects and selected NGC objects, such as the double cluster. The large size of the planisphere might be ergonomically inconvenient in the field and a little dorky looking, but hey it's virtually a star atlas with all the fabulous detail! After using this planisphere for a while, I picked up some of my others and they just look juvenile. I've gotten spoilt! I would say the next most decent planisphere is one of David Chandler's ( I like the distortion-free flip side Southern view option of his).

the book is written in the vain of comparative religion and philosophy as perceived in the mid 1800's and was intended to enlighten members of the scottish rite freemasonry as to what the degrees they went through should bring to mind..each chapter was to represent a degree..each degree was about a year of time of learning and study on the members part..many members never made it to the highest ranks but only to the 14th..it is definitely a hard read but well worth the time, effort and money involved in the pursuit of knowledge, both current and archaic..remember that latin and hebrew were subject that were taught in the 1800's in the schools and is used throughout the book.

Child Stars, Vol. 8: Corey Haim and Corey Feldman
Average Reviews:

It really is a stretch to call this a 'book'. It is a pamphlet sized word for word reproduction of Wikipedia entries on films which star Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. There is literally not a single reference or source which is not from Wikipedia. Its annoying that this was not disclosed on the product page, in fact, it is downright deceitful. "Six Degrees Books" is seeking to profit by deceiving readers into paying money for something that is free on the internet.

Nobody better represents the phenomenon of the child star better than Corey Haim and Corey Feldman. The "Two Coreys" were the heartthrobs of millions of girls in the '80s and early '90s.Haim rose to fame with his parts in "Lucas" and "Silver Bullet," while Feldman rose to fame with his roles in "Gremlins" and "Stand By Me."The two achieved super-stardom when they started appearing opposite each other, namely with the cult hit "The Lost Boys."They started in other hits together like "License to Drive" and "Dream and Little Dream," but shortly thereafter their careers started to derail and drugs took over for Haim. Read all about the rise and fall of the "Two Coreys" in this edition of "Child Stars."Project Webster represents a new publishing paradigm, allowing disparate content sources to be curated into cohesive, relevant, and informative books. It only had six pagesdevoted to graduate programs in archaeology without any descriptions as to the programs offered, backgrouns of the professors or even department heads. I did notice that there was much more detail in the sections relating to other programs, however, for archaeology it was wasted.

Top Careers for Economics Graduates Review

Top Careers for Economics Graduates
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first few chapters have some interesting information for high school students and college freshman who are thinking about becoming economics majors. Their are suggestions on what type of classes to take and some (not very complete) information about what kinds of jobs economics major can find.
The rest of the books gives 3-4 page summaries of different jobs. The summary are not written specifically for economics majors, they are obviously written for more than one book. Most of the descriptions are for jobs that would be more suitable to accounting majors. All of the information about these jobs is available for free on the burea of labor statistics website.
This book would be ok for someone just entering college, but is pretty much useless for an economics major who is entering the job market soon.

The Social Work Graduate School Applicant's Handbook: The Complete Guide To Selecting and Applying to MSW Programs Review

The Social Work Graduate School Applicant's Handbook: The Complete Guide To Selecting and Applying to MSW Programs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Social Work Graduate School Applicant's Handbook is one of the best books out there about obtaining an MSW, but it does have a couple flaws.
The first few chapters discuss the characteristics that applicants should look for in MSW programs, including accreditation, rankings, financial aid, micro vs. macro social work, concentration, fieldwork opportunities, faculty quality, housing, campus facilities, and alumni networking. Then the book continues by discussing the qualities that graduate schools look for in applicants, such as undergraduate major, coursework, GPA, letters of recommendation, biographical statement, employment, internships, volunteerism, research experience, etc. These chapters are useful to applicants who do not know much about graduate school admission. However, a downfall of this book is that it could be a little more informative about concentrations. It has a couple paragraphs devoted to child welfare, housing and homelessness, and substance abuse, but I wish that it included more information about social work pertaining to battered women, the elderly, and education.
The third and final section contains several appendices about various programs throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Unfortunately, not all programs are listed, and even the 93 listed ones do not include all information, especially about concentrations, tuition, the percentage of accepted applicants, and accreditation dates. However, this final section also includes worksheets about visiting schools and preparing your biographical statement, which certainly ease the process of applying to graduate school.

360º London Review

360º London

As an anglophile and collector of British coffee table books, I'd like to say that this book is just terrific. The format is unusual with the short spine and wide pages and shows off the 360 degree photos to good advantage. While not all the photos are of the 360 degree variety, all of them are at the very least interesting and at best absolutely breathtaking. All the historical sites are accounted for as well as some more obscure places like Brixton Market and the Horniman Museum. If you like unusual color photos of this historically fascinating and architecturally beautiful city, this book is for you. It is atypical and wondrous to look upon.

Using a digital camera and digital imaging technology, photographer Nick Wood has developed a new way to photograph landscapes and cityscapes, placing the viewer in the center of dramatic 360 panoramas. Exploring New York and London with this equipment, he documents his favorite places. The resulting books are perfect souvenirs of great cities and intriguing photographic adventures. Each book visits famous landmarks as well as hip and popular spots off the beaten path in spectacular 360º photographs. Numerous visual details give a sense of closer involvement with a scene. The long, landscape format is suited to the style of the photographic images, and each volume has one amazing gatefold. Included with each book is a Mac- and PC-compatible CD-ROM with QuickTime movies of all the sites.360º London similarly offers a combination of the familiar and the offbeat, from Buckingham Palace to Madame Tussaud's, and including the Tate Modern, Carnaby Street, Greenwich Observatory, Tower Bridge, a Rolls-Royce showroom, Portobello Market, and other memorable locations.

This book is very useful for anyone who is a history major or is thinking of majoring in history. The first section outlines some general, but important information. It talks about writing an effective resume. It also discusses different steps to take to become successful depending on what stage in education you are in (high school, college, or graduate school). There are interviews with different people who are already working in fields related to history which are useful. The second section, which is much larger than the first, describes 35 different careers that a history degree can be of use in. The careers range from corporate jobs, government jobs, teaching, and museum jobs. The book describes many different aspects of the career, such as expected salaries, how fast that segment of the job-market is growing, what level of education and other skills are needed for the job, etc. Overall, this book is a great resource for people looking to use their history degrees to make a living. It also provides other online and print sources that could be useful in the job hunt.

The Gates Unbarred: A History of University Extension at Harvard, 1910 - 2009 (Harvard University Extension School) Review

The Gates Unbarred: A History of University Extension at Harvard, 1910 - 2009 (Harvard University Extension School)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Every evening from September to May, as students at Harvard College stream back to their Houses for dinner, another, much larger and more diverse population arrives to take their places in the College's labs and lecture halls. This group is admitted non-selectively, and therefore may not enjoy quite the same caché as undergraduates who have passed through the eye of Harvard's admissions needle. Yet they are, in many ways, a better educated group (many with advanced degrees), richer in life experience, and often possessing a clearer sense of why they are there. For these reasons among others, many of Harvard's best professors elect to spend their evenings teaching this group.
Three of our daughters attended the Extension School for several years (as homeschooled students) before enrolling as conventional undergraduates at Harvard College, Swarthmore, and Oxford. Through their eyes our family has had an opportunity to compare the Extension School to Harvard College and other selective schools. We can confirm that Extension School courses are often virtually identical to their counterparts at the College (sometimes with the same faculty, syllabi, facilities, and exams). More interesting than the similarities in content is the relatively limited impact of the very different admissions standards on academic peformance. Extension students more than hold their own, sometimes drawing on different sources of strength than their more selectively admitted peers. This underscores the critical importance of high expectations, excellent teaching, and the excitement of accomplishing something difficult, as well as the benefits of a more age-diverse student body. We should perhaps ask ourselves whether the "age segregation" of traditional schools, typically extending from primary grades through university, is a useful or necessary property, or in fact, one that needlessly deprives students of perspectives and experience from which they would benefit.
Few of the nation's top colleges have had the courage or commitment to open their gates as Harvard has for the past century, perhaps for fear of diluting their "brand", perhaps because they haven't understood the benefits. Whatever the reasons, Harvard stands head and shoulders above its peers in this as in so many other areas. The Extension School is, in many ways, Harvard, and our country, at its very best, not just a jewel in the University's crown, but a model from which much can be learned as we seek broader reforms of our nation's education system as a whole.
Michael Shinagel deserves high praise for telling this important story as he has.

The Gates Unbarred traces the evolution of University Extension at Harvard from the Lyceum movement in Boston to its creation by the newly appointed president A. Lawrence Lowell in 1910. For a century University Extension has provided community access to Harvard, including the opportunity for women and men to earn a degree.

In its storied history, University Extension played a pioneering role in American continuing higher education: initiating educational radio courses with Harvard professors in the late 1940s, followed by collegiate television courses for credit in the 1950s, and more recently Harvard College courses available online. In the 1960s a two-year curriculum was prepared for the U.S. nuclear navy ("Polaris University"), and in the early 1970s Extension responded to community needs by reaching out to Cambridge and Roxbury with special applied programs.

This history is not only about special programs but also about remarkable people, from the distinguished members of the Harvard faculty who taught evenings in Harvard Yard to the singular students who earned degrees, ranging from the youngest ALB at age eighteen, to the oldest ALB and ALM recipients, both aged eighty-nine—and both records at Harvard University.

I use this book in teaching French to some Junior-High age children. This is an excellent book for covering grammar basics and providing a foundation to the language. The book contains a decent French/English and English/French dictionary at the back of the book, as well as lessons on French culture and history (which are written in English). Exercise directions and grammar lessons are clear and written in English. The book is intended to be a first year text book and therefore, there are no pronounciation guide lines. The book would best be used with a teacher, and is probably not appropriate for someone who is trying to learn without an instructor.
