I first read this book in its original shorter form (it was expanded by the request of the MSA)in "The Freemasons Key" a collection of writings edited by Michael R. Poll (and found @amazon.com). The expanded version that this book represents is not so much more in-depth as it is richer in the number of symbols it seeks to explain.
The author does not try to exhaust the topics, just give the reader a direction in which to seek more illumination. He uses a more (for the 1920's) scientific approach, I.E. relates the symbols of Masonry to its relationship with Masonry. He does a good job of wetting the apetite.
Understand, this was written in the 1920's so the point of view of some of the Landmarks are a bit antique,(for example the differance between Operative and Speculative in reference to a "body free of defects") but the foundation is strong and it is a good place to begin, expand, or refresh your Masonic knowledge.

1924. The craft needs a large literature of books as this. Private students and members of study clubs should master it paragraph by paragraph. Masters and Wardens and all others entrusted with the exemplification of our marvelous Masonic Ritual will find in it such light on all the important symbols of the Three Degrees and will give them and their audience a new interest in the work and a new appreciation of the inexhaustible wealth hidden away within the heart of Ancient Craft Masonry.-H.L.
