Great Jobs for Business Majors Review

Great Jobs for Business Majors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book lays out 5 career paths that a business major can choose. While it has a beginning section on resumes, networking, and other things necessary to get the job, that information can be found elsewhere. Therefore I recommend this book only for business majors, not really for anyone further along exploring a broad range of options.

You Majored in What?: Mapping Your Path From Chaos to Career Review

You Majored in What: Mapping Your Path From Chaos to Career
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a career counselor for almost fifteen years now, and my shelves are filled with everything from "What Color is Your Parachute?" to "Do What You Are" to "I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was". Until recently, I felt that most every career exploration book was retreading the same ground, connecting your skills, values, and interests in a linear way to matching job titles. Or, at the other extreme, telling you to just think happy metaphysical thoughts to change the universe and manifest prosperity.
Then I read "You Majored in What?" - and I was blown away by a radically new approach to career exploration, based on Chaos Theory and what the author calls "Wise Wandering". It takes into account the fact that nobody follows a linear path to a lifelong career that fits perfectly. Instead, it leverages the seemingly random events in your life to provide clues to your attractors.
Thank you, Dr. Brooks, for giving me a new set of tools to use with my clients. It's opened me up to new approaches, and reminded me that, as Tolkien said, "Not all those who wander are lost."

Careers in Art and Graphic Design Review

Careers in Art and Graphic Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Careers in Art and Graphic Design is a good introduction to what the "young" graphic artist is up against. And it's encouraging. The jobs exist. We must mold the skill set to fill them. It gives solid practical information on how to form those skill sets and it's very current. It lists many occupations from Jewelry design to 3D game modeling. It also says internships are all but required. Whoosh! That's the sound of the air going out of my tires.
If I had a degree in art, a HR manager would look at it and say, "That's nice. Now show me what you can do." There's a Sports Arena full of folks with an MFA and no job. This is a portfolio driven industry. Careers in Art and Graphic Design gives info on how to get a job without a degree. It does so in a factual way.
My one compliant is that the layout isn't very attractive. Hmmmm, Maybe they should have hired me!

Careers in the graphic arts can be both rewarding and glamorous for young men and women with good training and proper focus. The author points readers toward courses in art and graphic design, discusses interning in studios and art departments, and points out the pros and cons of freelancing versus working in-house, at design firms and ad agencies. Titles in the practical and enlightening Success Without College series guide ambitious young men and women toward satisfying and well-paying careers in fields where a college degree is not required. However, all occupations described do require specialized training, either on the job or in technical or vocational classroom settings. Readers learn how and where to get that training, then find out how to get started on the highway to career success.

Teaching English Overseas: A Job Guide for Americans & Canadians Review

Teaching English Overseas: A Job Guide for Americans and Canadians
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is brilliant, and my only regret is that it was not available thirty years ago when I entered the world of EFL! I have travelled and taught in many countries, and although I never actually met Jeff Mohamed I kept hearing his name. He is a legendary figure in English language teaching.
Written in a friendly and highly readable style, this book covers every single aspect of the overseas teaching experience. It shows you how to determine your suitability to be a teacher, how to select a training course, how to conduct the job search, and how to settle into a job teaching English overseas. And this guide is not afraid to tackle issues such as teaching illegally (without a work permit), health issues and those sensitive cross-cultural issues (including personal relationships). Increasingly Americans seem to be becoming wary, or even afraid, of working abroad. With its thoroughly grounded and practical approach to all the issues, this book dispels those fears. Jeff Mohamed's enthusiasm is highly contagious!
The listings of resources are current and incredibly comprehensive (I was pleased to see it included the school in Egypt, ILI Helopolis, where I spent many happy years!)
For those starting their careers as teachers this book is invaluable. For those more seasoned teachers, the lists of resources (almost 100 pages of them!) are invaluable. And I see from the introduction that if you do not like it, you can contact the publisher for a full refund. What have you got to lose?

I think Field's list of "growth fields" is accurate, so the book is a valuable resource for this reason. On the other hand, if you're young and unsure what career to choose, the absolutely WORST thing you can do is sit down with this book and say "Well, I'm good at x, y, and z, and p and q are growth fields, so therefore I should be a ... " You may (as I did) end up in a job you do moderately well, but hate! You'll do far better to start by asking yourself, "What do I value the most?" and "What do I most enjoy doing?" -- and then ask yourself "How can I make this into a job?"
Books like this always remind me of the scene in "The Graduate" where a helpful elder takes Dustin Hoffman aside and tells him he has one word of advice for him: "Plastics!!" Barbara Sher's books are a great antidote.

150 Best Recession-Proof Jobs (Jist's Best Jobs)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this book out of the library to help my daughter decide on the best course of action. This book is laughable it is so wrong. The yearly job openings he lists for some fields are often not broken down but lumped together with a disclaimer, that if you don't read, may make you think that there are over 200,000 openings for foreign language teachers (guess it is all secondary education teachers, but then he got his information from some "source"). He lists job openings for librarians and social workers as being almost the same, but job growth is around 18% for social workers and around 4% for librarians. His projection on pay is also off for many jobs. Obviously he sits in an office gathering data from his sources instead of going out into the real world. Don't base any career decision on this book, please!!!

101 Careers in Gerontology Review

101 Careers in Gerontology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was ok, but I expected more details than was offered. Each career/position offers a brief overview, followed by an interview of someone who holds that position, including their academic background, college majors or previous degrees held in particular areas prior to their position in the field of gerontology. If one is looking for a book that not only suggests a number of career positions, but offers some indication of approximate salary ranges, as well as, positions available to those who have recently graduated from Gerontology programs-this book does not offer the additional information. Most of the interviewees presented held MSW's prior to becoming their present gerontology-related position. There are a few that had bacculaureate degrees and associate degrees. But, out of 101, only enough to be counted on one hand, and one in particular which deals with leading volunteers. As far as those working within the population, hands-on, based on the representation of the book, these types of positions require a background in social work, with a few having psychology or business-related majors. Pro: The book does give a variety of descriptions, education and experience of positions. Con: Not encouraging to new graduates (of gerontology-related programs), who lack the experience but have the degree.

What Can You Do with a Major in English: Real People, Real Jobs, Real Rewards Review

What Can You Do with a Major in English: Real People, Real Jobs, Real Rewards
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With typographical errors throughout, it's hard to take this book for an English Major seriously. The majority of the book is general and relates more to picking a major than information on a major. There is very little information in here that isn't common sense and only the case studies are of any real value to someone who is already fairly sure of their choice of a major. If you're fairly certian that this is the major for you, don't bother buying this book. You can pick up all of the information applicable to you by browsing through it in the local Borders or B&N.

Great Jobs for Environmental Studies Majors (Great Jobs Series) Review

Great Jobs for Environmental Studies Majors (Great Jobs Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What's this about the first 3 reviews being advertisements for "EnvironmentalCrossing dot com." Oh well.
This book is two thirds job opportunities, and one third how to represent and present yourself for getting a job. That last third is fairly good advice for anyone, whether you are interested in an environmental career or not.
The authors focus on five general environmental job tracks:
- environmental education
- environmental policy, planning, and management
- environmental technology
- environmental sciences
- environmental engineering
As I mentioned in the title of this review, throw out environmental engineering if you have an environmental studies degree. Environmental engineering, like civil engineering, is a demanding 4-5 year program of study. It ain't gonna happen.
The environmental sciences and technology tracks might be useful, but then your degree should be focusing on environmental science, and not environmental studies.
I sense a lot of students being interested in environmental education, but the book talks a lot about middle and high school positions. A teaching certification or degree is important here. I'd add environment-related communication careers (writing, public relations, journalism) here as well.
That brings us to environmental policy, planning, and management. This twenty page section could have been greatly expanded, because I see a lot of opportunity here for environmental studies majors. There are career opportunities in both government and non-governmental organizations here, as well as a track for environmental studies majors to get a graduate degree in law, public administration, or even business administration.
Best hint for applying for job? More and more employers are asking you to post your resume on-line. Don't be fancy. If it looks scrambled when the prospective employer opens it up, your chances are scrambled as well (p. 28).
You might also want to take a look at The Complete Guide to Environmental Careers in the 21st Century.
