Boy, do I feel like a great big chump for spending six figures on law school tuition. Someone gave this to me as a graduation present, and it was a crushing blow to realize how much time and money I could have saved. Then again, none of my attorney colleagues have Cardozo and Jefferson trading cards. So who's the chump now?

The Business of Sports Agents Review

The Business of Sports Agents
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just wanted to refute the review below. It must be for another book. This book has nothing to do with British sports or soccer. It deals with American sports--basketball, baseball, and football--and discusses both the history and problems of sports representation. As earlier reviews recommend, it is a 'must read' for anyone aspiring to be a sports agent.

Click Here to see more reviews about: The Business of Sports Agents

The legendary Charles C. "Cash and Carry" Pyle, considered by most to be the first sports agent, negotiated a $3,000-per-game contract for Red Grange to play professional football for the Chicago Bears in 1933. Today, salaries in the tens of millions of dollars are commonplace, and instead of theatrical promoters and impresarios, professionally trained businessmen and lawyers dominate the business. Successful sports agents are comfortable with high finance and intense competition for the right to represent talented players, and the most respected agents are those who can deal with the pressures of high-stakes negotiations in an honest fashion. But whereas rules and penalties govern the playing field, there are far fewer restrictions on agents. Incidents of agents manipulating athletes, ranging from investment scams to outright theft of a player's money, are far too commonplace, and there is growing consensus for reform. In The Business of Sports Agents, Kenneth L. Shropshire and Timothy Davis, experts in the fields of sports business and law, examine the history of the sports agent business and the rules and laws developed to regulate the profession. They also consider recommendations for reform, including uniform laws that would apply to all agents, redefining amateurism in college sports (a point Shropshire and Davis suggest may be essential to rooting out corruption), and stiffening requirements for licensing agents.Whether an aspiring sports agent, a lawyer, an athlete seeking an agent, or someone simply interested in understanding the world of sports representation, the reader will find in The Business of Sports Agents the most comprehensive overview of the industry as well as a straightforward analysis of its problems and the proposed solutions.

How To Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul Review

How To Be a Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul

If you are in commercial art field, regardless whether you are in graphic design or not, you must read this book. It tell you everything you wish your design school teachers had told you about the business of being a commercial artist. As an art school instructor myself, I made this book into a recommended reading material for my graduating illustration majors. Just cross the words "design" in this book and write over "illustration" (or animation, advertising, or whichever commercial art occupation), and more than 95% of it works. It is because this book does not teach you the tricks and gimmicks, but teaches you the philosophy of the business of being a commercial artist.

Alternative Careers in Science: Leaving the Ivory Tower Review

Alternative Careers in Science: Leaving the Ivory Tower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a recent Biology Ph.D. graduate, I am fortunate to have found this book about 1 year before graduation. I have always enjoyed biology, but my heart was just not in research, poring over the same project and data, day in and day out, 50 hours a week. Biology Ph.D.'s are, unfortunately, trained with tunnel vision in terms of career development. You are lead down a research path, and graduation represents a fork in the road: You can choose a life of academia following your mandatory postdocs, or you can immediately enter industry, following your mandatory postdocs.
For those who don't know, a postdoc is a type of internship following your graduation. You are the personal Igor for the head of the lab (usually a professor at a university or medical school). Hours are typically 6 days a week, 60 hours minimum, and earns about $35,000. You work on at lest 2-3 projects for the lab, and are expected to assist in training the new graduate students as well. In addition, you are expected to find your own grant money.
After the extreme stress of graduate work had been completed, call me crazy, but I decided an increase in stress was not what I wanted. Don't get me wrong; for those who love research, this is heaven, but not for me.
A year prior to graduation, I found this book. In my multiple years of study, no one had ever mentioned a sentence about any of the career options mentioned here, ALL of which were accessible to a Ph.D. student. About two dozen career options are mentioned here, from clinical research, to broadcast journalism, to sales...lots. Every career is discussed in detail from a personal account of someone who actually works in the field. Everything is discussed, from salary, hours, a typical day, to extra training and advancement opportunities.
This book did nothing short of change my career outlook from a pessimistic view of my science career to a wonderful new career in medical writing...earning twice as much as the postdoc I quit after one week. (If this doesn't appeal to you, there are plenty of other choices in this book.)
The book does not discuss EVERY option. The job I have now was not mentioned initially in the book. However, it opened my eyes, and got me started in this path. Spend the cash and buy it. Consider it a cheaper version of going to a great career counselor....or a psychiatrist.

Teaching English Overseas: A Job Guide for Americans & Canadians Review

Teaching English Overseas: A Job Guide for Americans and Canadians
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is brilliant, and my only regret is that it was not available thirty years ago when I entered the world of EFL! I have travelled and taught in many countries, and although I never actually met Jeff Mohamed I kept hearing his name. He is a legendary figure in English language teaching.
Written in a friendly and highly readable style, this book covers every single aspect of the overseas teaching experience. It shows you how to determine your suitability to be a teacher, how to select a training course, how to conduct the job search, and how to settle into a job teaching English overseas. And this guide is not afraid to tackle issues such as teaching illegally (without a work permit), health issues and those sensitive cross-cultural issues (including personal relationships). Increasingly Americans seem to be becoming wary, or even afraid, of working abroad. With its thoroughly grounded and practical approach to all the issues, this book dispels those fears. Jeff Mohamed's enthusiasm is highly contagious!
The listings of resources are current and incredibly comprehensive (I was pleased to see it included the school in Egypt, ILI Helopolis, where I spent many happy years!)
For those starting their careers as teachers this book is invaluable. For those more seasoned teachers, the lists of resources (almost 100 pages of them!) are invaluable. And I see from the introduction that if you do not like it, you can contact the publisher for a full refund. What have you got to lose?

Six Pixels of Separation: Everyone Is Connected. Connect Your Business to Everyone. Review

Six Pixels of Separation: Everyone Is Connected. Connect Your Business to Everyone.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a book for someone who is unfamiliar with the internet. There are terrific tips scattered throughout, some of which I could really use. My problem with it is that a huge chunk of space is devoted to convincing the reader how important the internet is, how useful it can be in creating a successful business model in this new and exciting digital world. I already know I want to create a presence. I think anyone who picks up this book already knows s/he wants to create a presence. The question is how, but this is not a howto book.
Mitch Joel throws out a bunch of examples of things we can consider doing for our business: pod casts, widgets, blogs, etc. There's not much information about how to get started doing a pod cast, just that we should consider doing it and why it could help. There seems to be an assumption that the audience would be familiar with the technology enough to know how to get started, but such a reader would not need this book.

Is it important to be connected? Well, consider this: If Facebook were a country, it would have the sixth largest population in the world. The truth is, we no longer live in a world of six degrees of separation. In fact, we're now down to only six pixels of separation, which changes everything we know about doing business. This is the first book to integrate digital marketing, social media, personal branding, and entrepreneurship in a clear, entertaining, and instructive manner that everyone can understand and apply. Through the use of timely case studies and fascinating stories, SIX PIXELS OF SEPARATION offers a complete set of the latest tactics, insights, and tools that will empower you to reach a global audience and consumer base-and, best yet, you can do this pretty much for free. Digital marketing expert Mitch Joel unravels this fascinating world of new media-but does so with a brand-new perspective that is driven by compelling results. The smarter entrepreneurs and top executives are leveraging these digital channels to get their voice "out there"-connecting with others, becoming better community citizens, and, ultimately, making strategic business moves that are increasing revenue, awareness, and overall success in the marketplace-without the support of traditional mass media. Everyone is connected. Isn't it time for you and your company to connect to everyone? SIX PIXELS OF SEPARATION will show you how.

Average Reviews:

I got this book out of the library to help my daughter decide on the best course of action. This book is laughable it is so wrong. The yearly job openings he lists for some fields are often not broken down but lumped together with a disclaimer, that if you don't read, may make you think that there are over 200,000 openings for foreign language teachers (guess it is all secondary education teachers, but then he got his information from some "source"). He lists job openings for librarians and social workers as being almost the same, but job growth is around 18% for social workers and around 4% for librarians. His projection on pay is also off for many jobs. Obviously he sits in an office gathering data from his sources instead of going out into the real world. Don't base any career decision on this book, please!!!

The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business Review

The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having graduated from a top business school in Canada, I can safety say that I could have thrown out all my textbooks and used the money I spent on tuition to actually START a business, and used this book as a replacement to my business education.
What makes this book warrant such a strong statement is the fact that it's a comprehensive synthesis of all of the concepts you need to know to understand business inside and out. There are no complex models to learn or outdated theories to memorize just to get marks or pass tests. What you get is a comprehensive set of "mental models" or heuristics on all of the sub parts of creating, operating and working within a business. Why is this important? Because a mental model is like a rule of thumb for any possible scenario you might encounter in running a business - from value creation to delivery to marketing to finance. It helps you look at the world through the lens of what's most important (and thus no fluff to distract you) which ultimately helps you to ask the right questions and ultimately helps guide you to make the right decisions about maneuvering in business. These principles are universal and applicable for small business start ups to Fortune 50 CEOs because they're based on business fundamentals (the mental models) and not just tactics found in most other books.
In addition to a sound business knowledge what this book has is a very extensive section on working with yourself and with others. Achieving great strides in business is sometimes less about knowing the business aspect but more about conquering yourself - either with productivity, with working with people or with overcoming doubts and fears - all things I'm finding out as I work on my own venture. After having read dozens of psychology and self help books I can also say without a doubt that the section on working with yourself trumps them all. Josh delivers a well researched practical guide to understanding how you brain works and how to work with it rather than against it, so you can actually go ahead and apply the concepts in the rest of the book.
Highly recommended if you wish to know more about business, are thinking of starting your own business, or are thinking about joining an MBA program to climb the corporate ladder. Buying this book could end up saving a mortgage worth of student debt, so what have you really got to lose?

The 29% Solution: 52 Weekly Networking Success Strategies Review

The 29% Solution: 52 Weekly Networking Success Strategies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The authors start out with the premise that although networking is proven to be valuable in business, it is still rarely taught in business schools.
The book begins with a self-analysis test to help determine one's networking skills. Topics and assignments are broken down into 52 weeks, with spaces in some of the chapters for you to write in the book as you do that week's assignment. (Not every week has a writing area, so you may want to keep a separate notebook or keep notes and action steps on a Blackberry/PDA.)
It could almost be called Networking for Dummies or for Introverts or even for Clueless. I say that because the book addresses so many topics that brought some former co-workers and bosses to mind. MANY people who are in business at various levels could be helped by networking, but are not born schmoozers or networkers, and don't know where to begin.
This book charts out one of the simplest game plans for success that I've seen in quite awhile. It is not all new knowledge, but it is all in one place, so you can check off your progress and see what the next step is for growing your skills and your business. The plan is simple, but not always easy. As the authors say, it's netWORKing, not netEATing or netSITTing.
Topics included may require major changes or just minor tweaks to a person's life. Examples are: being accountable to a group, writing thank you notes, being engaging, writing a press release, getting and giving referrals, following up, being a change agent, becoming an expert, and more.
Recommended for complete wallflowers and introverts who may even know but don't ever DO. It's also good for extroverts and "self-made" individuals who think they are the best networkers in the world but who need refinement and more focus on others than just their own abilities and personality.
Terrific reference book to use and refer back to again and again.

The Best 282 Business Schools, 2007 (Graduate School Admissions Guides) Review

The Best 282 Business Schools, 2007 (Graduate School Admissions Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book gives some information that can be helpful
1. A whole lot of stats (Academic rating, GPA ave, GMAT ave, # of students, student faculty ratio, joint degress, financial facts, and a lot more!)
2. A short description/info on academics, career and placement, student life environment, admissions, + more of every school.
Why I don't like it:
1. Most are just US schools. I expected more schools from Europe, Asia, Australia.. There are still a number of non-US schools. But I bought this book to have an idea of how other schools outside US are.
2. They are all MBA programs. I chose this book among others because it said "Best 282 Business Schools," not "Best 282 MBA programs." I intentionally excluded books with "MBA" on their title from my shopping list. There are a lot more programs than the MBA(Ms Finance, Ms Marketing, Ms International Business etcetc.) Business schools are not just about MBA programs. I was expecting see more of them from the book. The only non-MBA programs that they list are the joint-degrees available per school. If you're looking for an MBA program, this won't be a problem.
3. Academic rankings are........ absurd. I couldn't believe they gave University of Chicago just 78 points in academic ranking. Businessweek ranked that school #1, ahead of Harvard/Wharton/Stanford. They could have at least given Chicago an 85.
One final note, if you plan to use this book to gather research information for your essays in top 30 schools, this won't be enough. You'll still need to interview/talk to the adcom, teachers, students or alumnus/alumna.

The Portable MBA (Portable MBA Series) Review

The Portable MBA (Portable MBA Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The rage nowadays seems to be how you can circumvent the B school process, save 100,000 dollars, and still come out on top with all the knowledge free.
I got news for you.
It won't happen.
But there are activities and materials you can procure in order to sharpen your business acumen and critical reasoning skills.
This post comes as a result from a recent seminar I attended where deans from top MBA programs in NYC were convened to talk about the admissions process.
There were 5 up there - 3 of them agreed that if it weren't for the networking opportunities at B school, everything you get a B school can be attained by suscribing to the Economist.
I was shocked.
So here we go.
The top five ways to get your portable MBA:
1. Buy the complete Portable MBA Series. There are many more, but you only need these 8:
- the portable MBA (start with this one)
-" " finance/accounting.
-" " entrepreneurship
-" " marketing
- " " management
- " " strategy
- " " investments
- " " economics
You probably think I'm joking.
I'm not.
The wealth of information here will blow you away.
Be a smart and consider it all as an investment.
Anyways, top b schools cover all the topics listed above.
2. Suscribe to the Economist.
I suscribe to dozens of business periodicals, but the Economist is global in scope.
Remember that word - global.
You'll hear it a lot in Business school should you decide to go.
3. Read Thomas Friedman's new book: THE WORLD IS FLAT. I read over 300 business books a year (on average one a week) and this is so far the best book I've read in 2005.
Get this: Business Week polled some of the top B school professors in the nation and they all said they were planning on reading this over the summer.
I'll let you decide.
4. Be thankful you have the internet at your disposal.
Our parents did not have such a luxury as Google, Investopedia, or Wikipedia.
Read everthing related to business, finance, econ, marketing, technology, media, wall street, stock markets, venture capitalism, & the internet.
That means blogs, too...
5. Get cable and watch either CNNfn, CNBC, or Bloomberg as much as you can.
Even if you're busy, leave it on and let that juice seep into the subconscious.
Use discipline + never change the channel to watch what the rest of America watches.
So there you go.

In addition, numerous case studies, vignettes, and first-person accounts from managers and executives at leading companies create a richer understanding of business transformation. I'm giving this book 4* not because of my experience with it, but because of the potential I see that it holds to be a concise, quick read for those who are just starting out. For anyone past 2nd year of college though, this would not be useful
