Outstanding book. I bought this for my daughter who, against my better judgement, chose to be a psychology major at Madison. Before I gave her the book, I read the whole thing. I'm not nearly as worried anymore. This book provides excellent overview to what can be accomplished with a Psych degree.

I haven't really looked at the book to much. From what I see I like it, and it will be helpful down the rode. I am starting my first few semesters to become a Sociologist.

This supplementary text helps students and professors answer the often-asked question, "What can I do with a degree in sociology?" It provides meaningful answers to a specific, targeted audience: typical students, 18 to 20 years old, taking their first sociology courses. The book presents a series of biographies, "Character Profiles," which serve as a template for career development on the basis of a degree in sociology. They include discussions of what can be done with a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D., or a combination of degrees (e.g. Sociology and Business). An appendix, "A Workbook for Job Seekers in Sociology" takes students step by step through job search tactics and career development strategies.

Police Interrogation and American Justice Review

Police Interrogation and American Justice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Richard Leo brilliantly analyzes the function of police interrogations within the larger adversarial system of U.S. criminal justice. Whereas interrogations are presented as a neutral tool for truth-seeking, Leo shows how in reality police function as an unmonitored and unchecked arm of the prosecution, targeting both guilty and innocent suspects alike in a ruthless and fraudulent game of psychological manipulation in which they hold all the cards. Leo uses a historical lens to show how today's psychologically coercive techniques evolved from the widespread "third-degree" practices outlawed in the 1930s. Whereas the third-degree was visibly vicious and lawless, modern interrogators hide behind a façade of science and professionalism that allows them to wield enormous unchecked power and influence over criminal justice outcomes.
Popular belief in the "myth of the psychological interrogation" - that only the guilty confess and that confession statements are reliable - prevents judges and jurors from understanding is that the extreme and sophisticated psychological coercion tactics wielded in some interrogations, especially in serious or high-profile cases, can make almost anyone feel helpless enough to falsely confess, Leo argues. He explains how the final product is jointly scripted by the police and the hapless suspect into such a compelling narrative that a fair trial is rendered impossible.
One of the book's many strengths is its focus on topics that are rarely studied in much depth, such as this topic of how the postadmission narrative is constructed. Another rarely highlighted topic is the corrupting effect of systematic police deception in reports and court testimony about what goes on in the interrogation room. Leo also analyzes the state of the Miranda warnings, which he argues have been transformed into a "public relations coup" and gutted to the point that they serve not as a protection for suspects but as yet another tool of law enforcement. And he provides timely discussion of the limitations of applying artificial laboratory research to the real world of law and order.
Leo concludes by arguing that we are entering the "Era of Innocence," as symbolized by DNA testing exonerating hundreds of innocent convicts, in which reforms can be undertaken to transform police interrogation from an adversarial to a truth-finding practice. His proposed reforms include mandatory electronic recording, requiring probable cause to interrogate, prohibiting promises or threats, protecting vulnerable populations such as the mentally retarded, mentally ill and juveniles, and allowing expert witness testimony about coercive interrogation techniques.
Throughout this compelling volume, Leo strengthens his arguments using rich examples drawn from his massive collection of firsthand data from research and consultation in actual criminal cases. This cutting-edge book is a must-read for anyone involved in or interested in the criminal justice system.

"Read him his rights." We all recognize this line from cop dramas. But what happens afterward? In this book, Richard Leo sheds light on a little-known corner of our criminal justice system--the police interrogation.

Incriminating statements are necessary to solve crimes, but suspects almost never have reason to provide them. Therefore, as Leo shows, crime units have developed sophisticated interrogation methods that rely on persuasion, manipulation, and deception to move a subject from denial to admission, serving to shore up the case against him. Ostensibly aimed at uncovering truth, the structure of interrogation requires that officers act as an arm of the prosecution.

Skillful and fair interrogation allows authorities to capture criminals and deter future crime. But Leo draws on extensive research to argue that confessions are inherently suspect and that coercive interrogation has led to false confession and wrongful conviction. He looks at police evidence in the court, the nature and disappearance of the brutal "third degree," the reforms of the mid-twentieth century, and how police can persuade suspects to waive their Miranda rights.

An important study of the criminal justice system, Police Interrogation and American Justice raises unsettling questions. How should police be permitted to interrogate when society needs both crime control and due process? How can order be maintained yet justice served?

An Astrological Mandala: The Cycle of Transformations and Its 360 Symbolic Phases Review

An Astrological Mandala: The Cycle of Transformations and Its 360 Symbolic Phases
Average Reviews:

Review: Dane Rudhyar: An Astrological Mandala: The Cycle of Transformations and its 360 Symbolic Phases.
Rudhyar's books are like Dane Rudhyar the man,- profound, universal and original- A true Renaissance man. His book is for every thinking person, who wants a guiding star to steer his life's course. Knowledge of astrology is irrelevant here, the casual reader can find much in Rudhyar's book, that will give clues and guidance in dealing with both, disturbing trends in society and anxieties in personal lives. Rudhyar has transformed the zodiac into a re-interpretation of the 'sabian symbols', giving each degree of the circle beginning with Aries 1', ending with Pisces 360', a profound significance that penetrates through the heart of the matter. The Mandala, not being static slowly reveals the "unfoldment of the personality not unlike Jung's process of individuation". Each degree has a mystical and significant interpretation, with exquisite imagery, that delve straight to the core of the problem providing an insight that rivals I Ching, e.g. "(Cancer 29') A Greek Muse weighing Newborn Twins in Golden Scales. Keynote: The Intuitive weighing of alternatives..." A clarifying explanation follows the keynote. These symbols can be a significant tool in the hands of an intuitive reader, who allows the detail of the symbolic image to speak for itself. It is in this potent use of imagery that Rudhyar has distinguished himself.
The book is divided into 4 lucid parts Each part unique and distinct from the whole with a wealth of knowledge and insight in each one. You can enjoy the book flipping through random pages or start from the beginning to the end, either way it will refresh and revitalize your thinking. It lifts astrology from the mundane and turns it into an esoteric philosophy that is completely credible. This book is not a frivolous treatment of planets and aspects. It is a mystical treatise, on the forces that propel or impel our lives and the author has a tenacious understanding of these forces that spin us around.
Buy the book. Read it leisurely at bedtime and savor Rudhyar. At the very least it will sharpen your mental acuity and creative visualization.

Some three decades ago, in an attempt to produce a series of symbols that would be relevant to contemporary students of astrology, Marc Edmund Jones and a clairvoyant friend formulated the so-called Sabian symbols. Now Dane Rudhyar has taken these symbols and reinterpreted them to emphasize their character as a cyclic and structured series which formalizes and reveals the archetypal meaning of 360 basic phases of human experience. Rudhyar also demonstrates how the Sabian symbols can be used for divination. Like Tarot cards and the I Ching, they provide clues to the best way to face anxieties, or suggest what alternative courses of action might mean in one's life. In the form of pictures that are easily recognizable to people today, these symbols can be said to constitute a contemporary, American I Ching, a series of symbols that goes to the very root of planetary significance for our present era.

Career Counseling: A Holistic Approach Review

Career Counseling: A Holistic Approach
Average Reviews:

I have been teaching Career Counseling for years and finally decided to try the Zunker text. What a mistake. Yes, it is comprehensive. But it is written like a bad lit review. Endless citations of research with little synthesis. It is hard for students to see the big picture! I will stick with the Niles/Harris-Bowlsbey text (Career Development Interventions in the 21st Century) for my Career Counseling course, and the Sharf text (Applying Career Development Theory to Counseling) for more advanced courses in Vocational Theory.

This highly successful book has been called the most comprehensive text on the market, providing students with needed career theory as well as practical techniques and examples. Through the author's clear writing style, case examples, tables, and exercises, students develop a solid understanding of the theoretical models of career counseling and are thoroughly exposed to the practical information on how to effectively counsel clients about career issues. As demonstrated by the text's new subtitle, 'A Holistic Approach,' this substantially revised Seventh Edition reflects the growing emphasis on looking at the "whole person"--values, temperament, talents, and passions--to determine his or her best career fit.

I just changed my major to psychology at the end of last spring. My program requires a Career Planning course for psychology, this is my first semester of junior year. The course partnered with this book was a nice intervention. This is not a huge book, one could probably read it in one sitting. There is a lot of useful information about fields in psychology, graduate admissions, and multiple chapters on areas of undergraduate involvement that will make for a competitive student applying to grad school or for getting the most out of your undergrad experience in general. I liked the chapter on APA format, it is laid out very nicely. I have been raised in MLA format since frashman year in highschool, so has not been the easiest transition. I hear a lot of "students need to be doing x, y, z" to get into grad school, this book puts these things in perspective. I have followed a lot of the advice given in this book, like becoming involved with research, and I am getting more out of my classes and achieving better grades.

Also, the book contains up-to-date career information that faculty might not normally have at their fingertips, including the latest salary figures for a number of psychology-related jobs and occupations. Your Career in Psychology: Industrial/Organizational Psychology Review

Your Career in Psychology: Industrial/Organizational Psychology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a professor having a doctorate in I/O Psychology, this is a very user-friendly book, perfect for sophomore/junior level college students interested in I/O Psych. I always recommend this book to students who want to know more about general graduate school issues and who are leaning towards I/O. I don't require students in my classes to purchase the book, but I do suggest that they buy it, especially since the price suits the typical college student.
One warning about the book, however, is that it includes a section on Human Factors which really is an entirely different field with its own various associations and journals separate from I/O. However, students are most likely not going to be introduced to the Human Factors field unless they research careers in I/O; therefore, its inclusion in the book is not a major issue for me.

Borderline Personality Disorder Demystified: An Essential Guide for Understanding and Living with BPD Review

Borderline Personality Disorder Demystified: An Essential Guide for Understanding and Living with BPD
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent overall resource for BPD. It covers the history, causes and course of the disorder as well as the most common treatments both pharmacologically and therapeutically.
The scope of the book is very broad and includes information for family members, lots of additional resources, co-occurring disorders and how this problem shows up in children.
If you have a scientific bent, you will benefit a lot from the chapter on BPD and the brain. There is a lot of detail on the specific neural pathways involved in impulsive behavior, memory impairment, etc. This information is nicely summarized in easy to understand diagrams and there is a simplified bottom line explanation at the end of the chapter. This section is well explained and anyone should be able to understand it, even people intimidated by scientific explanations.
The overall tone of the book is compassionate and hopeful. The author had a sister who had this order and a lot of his motivation for writing it comes from this space of caring and wanting to share both his experience and knowledge. Being a psychiatrist, he dovetails deep knowledge with understanding and compassion.
As you may know, BPD is often misdiagnosed and this book helps differentiate multiple things that may be going on and explains how to get clear on whether or not BPD is really something that is going on. I think this is a very important section and it provides enough detail to be useful, but in general he keeps his explanations of other disorders short and to the point.
The discussion of psychotherapies is excellent and collected into an excellent summary of which ones are best and the indication for when to use them. There is a misconception that the prognosis for Borderline Disorder is not very good among many people, this is dispelled in this book and the supporting arguments for this conclusion are good.
An added bonus is current research needs and directions. If you have BPD, you will be very interested in knowing where this area is headed and hearing about the cutting edge of today's research.
I think the book could have benefited from better organization, design and more careful editing. However, the content is excellent and there is a lot of useful information in a relatively small space. This book is a one-stop resource and a nice compliment to other books that focus on one particular dimension of this issue. The shortcoming in how the information is organized and presented is my only reason for giving it a four rating, the content is excellent and it's a fairly easy read for most people.
I have a good background in psychology and also in physiology and biochemistry. At one time, I did drug research and currently I work in the psychology field. I have read a number of books on this topic and this is one of the best.

As a university lecturer at three universities, I get plenty of questions about these things. I hear plenty of horror stories from students about faulty or non-existent mentoring in these areas. There is plenty of advice out there to be had from ignorant, indifferent, or hostile sources. A big problem is that many professors and staff in psychology departments at major universities don't have knowledge or interest in clinical and counseling psychology. They may be openly hostile to the entire field, or toward areas and programs they perceive as being too unscientific. Even among supportive mentors, there isn't enough time to mentor students on all these issues. For many professors, finding quality time with students sucks time from writing papers and chasing grants. Your best bet is to use this book to master the basics. Find a great mentor and use that person's time to fine tune your thinking and turbo-charge your applications.
My advice is to start here if you are serious about getting into grad school. Or, take a look at the APA's book, "Getting In", which is on the same topic. I don't care for the APA books as much as the insider's guide, but your mileage may vary. Also, you can probably get a copy of the 2006/07 guide for almost nothing. The earlier version contains good general information and *almost* up to date info.
And if you want your life as a grad student to go well at at the Big U, then make sure to consult the following classics: (Do this even if you aren't considering an academic career)
David Sternberg's "How to Complete and Survive a Dissertation."
Robert Sternberg's "Psychology 101 1/2: The Unspoken Rules for Success in Academia"
Another must read, for future academics:
Darley et al's "The Compleat Academic: A Career Guide"
And for future clinical and counseling psychologists:
Yalom's "The Gift of Therapy: An Open Letter to a New Generation of Therapists and Their Patients"
Get these other books. Do it. This stuff is worth its weight in gold.

Dr. Lieberman is a seasoned genius of human nature with a wealth of experience. In this book he presents an approach that is easy to understand, and more importantly, easy to implement. He doesn't ramble on about esoteric analytical ideas or get bogged down in complicated theories. True to his form, he lays out the psychology involved, and then gives a very clear formula to determine how emotionally sane or stable people are. I can see how these tools might be misused or even abused, so I subtracted a star, but I do recommend this book highly as a way to better know and understand what kind of people are coming in and out of one's life.

I haven't read the whole thing, but it has helped me in realizing I have valuable skills as a psych major that I didn't know were worth mentioning on a resume or to employers. It also has a great section on jobs, giving a profile for a specific entry-level job in a certain career path. These are practical jobs that the average psych/soc (they have different sections for each) graduate could be eligible for. It also made me realize that there are more jobs than people would like you to think out there for psych majors. There is also a section on how to network, step-by-step.
I took a star off because I have a short attention span and the book was a little to texty for me, I prefer a career guide that is more at-a-glance, since there are so many different books and resources to explore, and I can't spend time on just one.

The Insider's Guide to the Psychology Major: Everything You Need to Know About the Degree and Profession Review

The Insider's Guide to the Psychology Major: Everything You Need to Know About the Degree and Profession
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fantastic book. This is one of many books I have looked through to demystify the many paths of psychology and it stands out, head and shoulders, from all the rest. As a psychology major, I am finding one of the difficulties of planning is in trying to figure out a huge variety of choices in this very diverse field, and where exactly the paths lead. It can be confusing! Finding your "place" in psychology is like trying to follow a flow chart with arrows crossing and overlapping all over the place.
This book lays it out in the most understandable format I have seen. The authors explain it from the biggest picture to the smaller details. They explain things like the difference between PhD and PsyD, the overarching fields of academia and applied psychology, first from a theoretical standpoint and then a practical standpoint. The book explores concepts such as what these categories encompass, how they overlap, what kinds of careers people actually have within them? There are very relevant essays included, from students and professionals, that discuss the kinds of activities/interests/involvement that helped guide them in their choices, what their career involves, what a typical day for them might be like. The essays truly helped me get a better picture on each subject, and even gave me some ideas of areas I would like to explore.
There was information in there that I had not seen elsewhere. It covered things like an explanation of journal articles, evaluating graduate school programs (most info out there tells you how to prepare, but not how to choose the right one for you), and ways to seek applied experience.
Great book. I highly recommend to any psych student, or anyone interested in the field.
