Directory of Graduate Programs in Applied Sport Psychology Review

Directory of Graduate Programs in Applied Sport Psychology
Average Reviews:

OK, so it's my fault. I purchased this book to help my brother in his search for grad schools. He started to notice that the programs' websites didn't match up with what was written in the book. Finally, we saw that the book was published in 1998! In terms of graduate programs, that can be a lifetime. Many programs listed in this book no longer exist, whereas there are many newer programs that are not included. I believe there are now NINE editions of this book. Do not waste your time buying the fifth edition!

Organizational Communication: Balancing Creativity and Constraint Review

Organizational Communication: Balancing Creativity and Constraint
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a communication graduate student, so I've read a lot of organization communication texts and readers. I've read my Weick, my Mumby, my Deetz, my Jablin, my Putnam & my Poole. While I would never suggest that anyone ever forgo reading primary sources, who can argue that sometimes we just lack the time to read everything we would like to? That is where this book comes in.
This Eisenberg & Goodall book is not just an average review of the major concepts, themes and theories in organizational communication. It covers the concepts of org comm in more detail than most texts do. The authors also are very aware of the changes and challenges to organizations in the contemporary world, and included excellent chapters on globalization, outsourcing, etc.
Finally, Eisenberg & Goodall wrote this text interactively. It is the most dialogical of all the org comm texts I've read. This stimulates not just the memorization of fact, but deep-rooted thinking and contemplation.
If you do not know where to start when you look at the expansive landscape of organizational communication, this is THE place to start. After a thorough reflective reading of Eisenberg and Goodall, you will definately have a firm foundation to read the primary sources you want.

Inside Planets (Inside Astrology, Vol 1) Review

Inside Planets (Inside Astrology, Vol 1)
Average Reviews:

DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS BOOK OR INSIDE DEGREEES! IF YOU ARE ANY SORT OF ASTROLOGY ENTHUSIAST YOU WILL REAP TREMENDOUS VALUE FROM THIS BOOK!
Interpretations are based on planets in signs and planets in houses. Asteroids are also interpreted here. These are NOT your standard run-of-the-mill astrology archetypal reviews or summations nor are they lengthy essays or doctrines.
What they are are pure tapestries of certain portions of human experience, elucidated upon with such naked magic and visionary bluntness that I finish the section feeling totally astounded!
Very 'right-brain' you could say...very intuitive. But very leftbrain as well, forcing us to become a bit more analytical about our situations. I have reduced my astrology book collection down to just a few books, and this is one of them.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Inside Planets (Inside Astrology, Vol 1)

For centuries, spiritual seekers have turned to astrology to discover humans' deepest connections with the Earth and the cosmos. But too often, astrology devolves into meaningless clich's or impersonal newspaper horoscopes. In the early part of this century Marc Edmund Jones and Dane Rudhyar liberated astrology from the fatalistic approach of the medieval world. They took power from the high-and-mighty archaic planet gods, and offered it back to human beings. Here, at the end of the century, Inside Planets goes further, invoking each planet as a mighty full-bodied organism with a character and a soul of its own, a living breathing force with passion and humor and purpose that changes as it moves through the houses and signs. Each planet grabs you by the imagination and drags you to the campfire of The Greatest Story Even Told. Far more than an astrology guide, this book resuscitates from the ancient mystery temples of Atlantis an elegant and inspiring pantheon of wonder, terror, and creative solution to the problems that plague the soul.

You're Certifiable: The Alternative Career Guide to More Than 700 Certificate Programs, Trade Schools, and Job Opportunities
Average Reviews:

I bought this book for the 21 year old daughter of a friend. She had dropped out of college, complaining that nothing there really interested her. I discovered this book while browsing amazon.com, ordered it, and decided it was perfect for her. After she looked through it, she decided to apply for a school that taught animal massage (she's been crazy about animals since she was a child). She completed the program and is now happily working at a local kennel offering massages to companion animals.
The book lists about 700 other alternative career programs, covering 10 other areas ranging from crafts, arts, outdoors interests, healing, etc. The programs are described succinctly and information is provided on how to follow up. In the beginning of the book, the authors provide a nice introduction to the whole concept of alternative careers (how to find what interests someone, etc.)
Really, it would be a worthwile gift for someone who is looking for a way to make a living that is a little "different", but personally gratifying.

I attended this training session in person, and purchased the CD's from Amazon to share with team mates who were not able to go. While I believe the CD's are a good reinforcement and reminder for me.... alone, they lack meaning in many areas and would be weak training at best. This is mostly a recording of a live training session, without the benefit of the workbooks or group interaction.

The Six Sigma Book for Healthcare: Improving Outcomes by Reducing Errors Review

The Six Sigma Book for Healthcare: Improving Outcomes by Reducing Errors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a stand-alone reference this book offers very little to anyone looking to implement a six sigma program in healthcare. The book fails to address the organizational and strategic issues related to implementing a comprehensive process improvement strategy in any type of organization, let alone a healthcare organization. The book would have us believe that six sigma is the application of statistical problem solving techniques to traditional quality improvement programs. If it were that simple, many healthcare organizations have been practicing six sigma for over 15 years. Someone in healthcare looking to find out what six sigma is all about would likely be left with the impression that six sigma is just the latest buzzword. On the other hand, the book does provide some nice case studies that may be useful for a non-statistician looking to strengthen their process improvement tool belt. Either the authors don't really understand what six sigma is all about or they are just attempting to exploit the market by combining the words six sigma and healthcare in the title. Most healthcare professional would do better to look at the GE related references on the subject.

Much has been written on airborne and airmobile warfare from a First World perspective, but very little has been written from Africa's. The African-and especially southern African-operational theatres posed unique challenges. The lack of infrastructure, the lack of key points to attack, as well as the lack of mobility facing conventionally mounted forces and their subsequent inability to respond rapidly over the types of distances inherent in most African operational theatres, all played a role in the development of a uniquely African approach to this type of warfare. France's experiences in Algeria and the birth of the helicopter ‘gunship' and its associated tactics led the way. Foremost among the forces operating in subsequent theatres were the Portuguese, Rhodesians and South Africans during their various counter-insurgency (COIN) campaigns, with the helicopter playing a pivotal role with its mobility, firepower and shock effect. This book studies the role played by their airborne and airmobile forces during these campaigns as well as their equipment, doctrine and tactics. While it is safe to say that the advent of rotary-winged aircraft had a seminal impact on modern warfare, it had an even greater effect on the COIN battlefield. Combining both the advantages of the glider (concentration of force upon landing) and the parachute (vertical descent) and having none of their disadvantages, it changed the face of vertical envelopment overnight.

Word Callers: Small-Group and One-to-One Interventions for Children Who "Read" but Don't Comprehend (The Research-Informed Classroom) Review

Word Callers: Small-Group and One-to-One Interventions for Children Who Read but Don't Comprehend (The Research-Informed Classroom)
Average Reviews:

Anyone who teaches in the intermediate grades is familiar with word callers. They are those kids that can't seem to use strategies to improve their comprehension. They get little or nothing out of print, even when they have background knowledge to support them. They flit from book to book and say they "hate reading".
I have read many books in my ten years as an educator about trying to reach these students, but NOTHING I have ever read was as well-written and simple to follow as this book. It should be required reading for every intermediate teacher. It begins with a solid research base as to why these, often bright, students are floundering. Come to find out, it is often a lack of executive skills. Or, put simply, they do not have the mental flexibility to handle decoding and making meaning simultaneously. Can we measure this flexible thinking? Yes! This book has a simple, quick assessment to do just that. Can we improve this flexible thinking? Absolutely...although the methods are not at all traditional. Several ways to reach these students are described in detail in this book. Does it take a big investment in time or materials? No! Everything you need for the assessment and most of what you need for teaching is included. Other materials you might need are easy to obtain. And the best part? You can make a huge difference in your word caller's comprehension in just a matter of weeks, using Kelly's methods.

Fast, effective, research-based interventions for struggling readersHave you ever zoned out during reading pronounced the words, without processing their meaning? This is how word callers experience all reading, In fact, strong decoders with limited comprehension account for nearly a third of all struggling readers. Now there s powerful new hope for them in Word Callers. Word callers are so focused on letters and decoding that their minds don t knit together the meaning of the words they are reading. The diverse interventions in this book all address this inflexibility, helping these children become better able to process meaning alongside letter-sound information. Kelly CartwrightA centerpiece of Word Callers is an assessment and intervention developed by Kelly Cartwright that uses word and picture cards to measure and support readers sound-meaning flexibility an ideal resource for Tier 2 and Tier 3 RTI instruction. Kelly s research shows that your word callers can unglue from print and improve their comprehension in as few as 5 lessons. With Word Callers you ll help students in individual or small-group settings begin to make meaning and then build on their newfound skill: Assessments based on included word cards help identify inflexible readers. A straightforward, needs-driven research-tested intervention using the cards turns readers around fast. Engaging lessons with wordplay, word and picture cards, comprehension strategies, and more support the transition from word callers into full-time meaning makers. It s not often we have such a storybook scenario for our at-risk learners, but when you try Kelly Cartwright s suggestions with your students, when you see children transform from just reading words to understanding text and enjoying reading, you ll see how much hope there is for your Word Callers.

Reading Miscue Inventory: From Evaluation To Instruction Review

Reading Miscue Inventory: From Evaluation To Instruction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This text is an invaluable resource for those learning about the reading process and miscue analysis. I use it in my Reading Practicum class. The students read chapters, place stop and jot sticky notes on certain pages where they have questions, or comments, or ideas, and then bring those notes to class for discussion. Most of them have just completed their first miscue analysis with their reading partners. I was very happy (and relieved) to see how well they had picked up on the procedure and then the marking of the typescripts. I credit the text, with its clear explanations (lots of sticky notes on one page that say "What??" and then followed a page or two later with "OH...I get it now!") and examples and checklists. I'm looking forward to the rest of the semester!

2nd Chance (The Women's Murder Club) Review

2nd Chance (The Women's Murder Club)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had to give this book four stars, but only because it follows the EXACT same formula as the first book. The plot is still very exciting and the story grabs you. I made the mistake of reading one right after the other and it became too predictable to how the story was going to end. I would highly recommend this book, but not right after you've read the first one.
In this novel you follow the Women's Murder Club again, but this time it is a serial sniper that is taking people out. There is a "women's" story intertwined, though not love this time, but there's a pregnancy and Lindsay is reunited with her dad. Patterson does a good job casting suspicion on certain characters to sidetrack you. The end will surprise the reader, but only as to who the killer actually is. You think you've caught him, but have you really? Same formula as the first one...

Personally, this book was a great help to me. Although the strategies suggested for resume and cover letter writing (getting an interview and job) are nothing new, the second half of the book in which the authors describe five different career tracks are excellent in that they are directed specifically towards History Majors. While I originally pictured history majors going into either professional historian-type jobs (e.g. professors, authors) or classroom teaching, the authors very correctly pointed out that historical museums and other pubic education institutions are in need of people with history backgrounds as are businesses, etc. The advice is practical and the information proved to be very specific for me--a history major. Recommended for those of us with history backgrounds still trying to "find themselves" career wise.

As I read this book, I often found myself saying "Wow! This is what I am experiencing". I am working on my second graduate degree at a different institution so this is not a new community to me but the rules here are a bit different. It made me realize how fortunate I was in having great institutional support for my first degree. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is in a graduate program and keeps wondering why things operate in such peculiar ways. This book will also inspire you to take action to put in place some best practices.

Despite considerable research that has provided a better understanding of the challenges of doctoral education, it remains the case that only 57% of all doctoral students will complete their programs. This groundbreaking volume sheds new light on determinants for doctoral student success and persistence by examining the socialization and developmental experiences of students through multiple lenses of individual, disciplinary, and institutional contexts. This book comprehensively critiques existing models and views of doctoral student socialization, and offers a new model that incorporates concepts of identity development, adult learning, and epistemological development. The contributors bring the issues vividly to life by creating five student case studies that, throughout the book, progressively illustrate key stages and typical events of the socialization process. These fictional narratives crystallize how particular policies and practices can assist or impede the formation of future scholars. The book concludes by developing practical recommendations for doctoral students themselves, but most particularly for faculty, departments, universities, and external agencies concerned with facilitating doctoral student success.
