365 Ways to Become a Millionaire: (Without Being Born One) Review

365 Ways to Become a Millionaire: (Without Being Born One)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a combination of Think and Grow Rich, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and Unleash the Power Within in 365 aphorisms.
The aphorisms are divided into twelve subject areas from Integrity through Leadership. You will pass Relationships, Credibility, and Money along the way. About 95 percent of them are pertinent.
The ones that are off the wall almost provide comic relief. I never did figure out why having a chiropractor work on you spine was critical to your having integrity. And I swear by my chiropractor!
I may sound like a nit-picker, but there isn't too much in the book that will actually turn you into a millionaire in the narrow sense. It won't show you how to pick a stock, start up the next Amazon.com, or be a great real estate investor. Basically, the book's premise is that with your very positive, opportunity-seeking, desirable self you'll bump into enough to have that million rub off on you. If you feel comfortable with that approach, by all means buy, read and enjoy the book. If you want more focused advice, go elsewhere.
Good luck with your search for that first million, however you decide to pursue it!

The 21 Most Powerful Minutes In A Leader's Day: Revitalize Your Spirit And Empower Your Leadership Review

The 21 Most Powerful Minutes In A Leader's Day: Revitalize Your Spirit And Empower Your Leadership
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
John C. Maxwell has written a book here that will deepen your appreciation for The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and encourage you to live those laws in practical, yet spiritually-significant ways. Whether you are a parent, pastor, priest, lay leader of a Sunday School, head of a nonprofit foundation, CEO of a business, or simply work at your career, you will find important insights here from the greatest leaders and failures in the Bible.
The book is organized around the 21 irrefutable laws. Each chapter describes a way to use the material for 5 days during a week. You have a study lesson for 4 days, including a daily meditation question, and then a 5th day for taking action. Each lesson can be pursued in a few minutes. After 5 months, you will find yourself living closer to the ideal as a leader. Think of this as a handbook for implementation that includes all the theory you need, as well. Even if you did not read the earlier book from 1998, you can read, understand, and apply the lessons from this one.
Let me briefly summarize the laws and the Biblical analogies for you:
The Law of THE LID -- Leadership ability determines your effectiveness (compares Saul and David)
The Law of INFLUENCE -- True measures of influence are important(Joshua)
The Law of NAVIGATION -- Chart the right course (Nehemiah)
The Law of E.F. HUTTON -- When the real leader speaks, people listen (Samuel)
The Law of RESPECT -- People naturally follow leaders stronger than themselves (Deborah)
The Law of INTUITION -- Leaders evaluate everything with a leadership bias (Jethro)
The Law of MAGNETISM -- Who you are is who you attract (Elijah)
The Law of CONNECTION -- Touch a heart before you ask for a hand (Rohoboam)
The Law of THE INNER CIRCLE -- A leader's potential is determined by those closest to her or him (David)
The Law of EMPOWERMENT -- Only serious leaders give power to others (Barnabas)
The Law of REPRODUCTION -- It takes a leader to raise up a leader (Moses and Joshua)
The Law of BUY-IN -- People buy in to the leader, then the vision (Gideon)
The Law of VICTORY -- Leaders find a way for the team to win (Josiah)
The Law of THE BIG MO -- Momentum is the leader's best friend (Solomon)
The Law of PRIORITIES -- Activity is not necessarily accomplishment (Peter)
The Law of SACRIFICE -- Give up to go up (Moses)
The Law of TIMING -- When is as important as what to do and where to go (Esther)
The Law of EXPLOSIVE GROWTH -- To add growth, lead followers . . . to multiply growth, lead leaders (Paul)
The Law of LEGACY -- Lasting value is measured by succession (Jesus)
As a lifelong student of leadership (especially among CEOs of public companies), I heartily endorse these principles. They will be very beneficial in encouraging lasting growth that will also nurture the souls of those who serve in these families, religious groups, organizations and enterprises.
Even if you are not a particularly religious person, I think you will find it enjoyable to revisit these well-known stories from the Scriptures. Each chapter refers you to the relevant Biblical texts if you would like to read them directly.
If you are a religious person, you will probably also enjoy using the prayers that are outlined in the chapters to help you find guidance.
To give you a flavor of the book's organization, let's look at the Law of THE LID. For the first day, you focus on the principle that every person has the potential to be a leader. For the second day, you focus on that idea that every leader has lids. On the third day, you think about the idea that some lids can be lifted by leaders. On the fourth day, you concentrate on the concept that some lids have to be lifted by someone other than the leader. Also, few leaders let that happen. Then on the fifth day, you have actions to take in each of these four areas. The ideas are very powerful and the implementation steps are simple and useful.
I heartily encourage you to pursue this book and its lessons! You will find the improvements within yourself and around you to be irresisibly good!

The 4 Disciplines of Execution (Revised Edition): The Secret to Getting Things Done, On Time, With Excellence Review

The 4 Disciplines of Execution (Revised Edition): The Secret to Getting Things Done, On Time, With Excellence

I attended this training session in person, and purchased the CD's from Amazon to share with team mates who were not able to go. While I believe the CD's are a good reinforcement and reminder for me.... alone, they lack meaning in many areas and would be weak training at best. This is mostly a recording of a live training session, without the benefit of the workbooks or group interaction.

In business, survival depends on meeting objectives. Most failures in organizations today are not the result of a lack of smarts, they are caused by a lack of execution - things just don't get done. The 4 Disciplines of Execution teaches how to focus on your top priorities and get the critical things accomplished. Whether you are a member of a team, lead a team, or lead an entire organization, this workshop will equip you to deliver on your top priorities consistently and introduce you to four universal business disciplines that deliver results again and again:A. Focus on the Wildly Important. B. Create a Compelling Scoreboard. C. Translate Lofty Goals into Specific Actions. D. Hold Each Other Accountable - All of the Time. Each discipline includes a business principle, old thinking, new thinking, and a metaphor that further clarifies the learning. A bonus section on IMPLEMENTING THE DISCIPLINES supported by a special resource CD, gives critical information about activating the power of the 4 Disciplines in your organization.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Instant MBA: Think, perform and earn like a top business-school graduate (52 Brilliant Ideas) Review

Instant MBA: Think, perform and earn like a top business-school graduate (52 Brilliant Ideas)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Those who invest in thinking differently, in pulling ahead from the crowd, in constantly seeking fresh brilliant ideas are not just those who survive, but also those who thrive," according to Nicholas Bate in this book. The book contains the author's ideas of the essential parts of an MBA course, arranged into 52 short chapters, which could be studied at a rate of one per week for a year.
The book briefly covers a number of important ideas from Michael Porter, Peter Drucker, Jim Collins and other well-respected thought leaders, as well as some ideas from voices a bit closer to the lunatic fringe. Seven of the chapters are on concepts which the author describes as New World of Work Drivers: acceleration (increasing rate of change), automation, alternative shores (outsourcing), abundance (of choices), ambiguity (making the future unpredictable), anarchy (power is back with the people), and adrenaline (all of this causes fear). I found these chapters the most interesting.
The author makes an impossible promise in the book's title. It is simply not possible to obtain the knowledge and skills of an MBA graduate instantly. I was hoping that each chapter would act as a starting point for a topic, with an extensive list of books and other resources that the reader could consult for further information on each topic. Instead, most topics are presented in a manner which is likely to be too brief for the reader fully to comprehend the topic's value and significance, and at the end of the book there is a list of just 17 books, more than half of which are unlikely to be on any real MBA course reading list.
Finance, economics and managerial accounting are frequently core subjects in MBA courses, but this book does not mention economics and has very little to say about finance, and as a result the reader does not even get introduced to much of the distinctive language that MBA graduates speak. In chapter 14 the author says that there is a lack of understanding about mission and vision statements, and then proceeds to demonstrate his own lack of understanding by completely confusing the concepts.
The book does contain some interesting material, and it is short and easy to read. However, if you are looking for a book that gives you a good overview of what people typically learn in a real MBA course, you would do well to look elsewhere.

The benefits of a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree can be massive: fast-track career advancement, a big fat wage packet, the whole high-flying top-notch executive lifestyle. But studying for an MBA isn't something to decide to do lightly - it's a big investment to take a year or more out of your career path or commit endless week-ends to a part-time version, and for many the cost of either of these options is prohibitive. "Instant MBA" is the must-have guide to making the most of yourself and your career prospects, whether you're studying for an MBA or just out to improve your prospects while you work.

However, this is an excellent guide to successfully conquer college and the many new experiences that come with college, no matter what your timeline is. Learn to Intern CEO Style: 71 Leadership Principles that Got Me and Now You Money, a Free Graduate Degree, and Respect
Average Reviews:

This book is well organized and will give you all the helpful tips you'll need to have an edge over everyone else that's looking for an internship. It speaks to high school students and college students specifically, but it can benefit anyone that's searching for a job. The book offers a lot of sound practical advice and really illustrates how you can best present yourself to future employers.
I used this book when I was looking for an internship in Washington D.C., so I can speak from experience that the advice from this book really does work. After I sent out all my application materials, I literally landed a highly competitive internship within 48 HOURS! Thanks to the advice in Learn to CEO Style, I'll be interning at the Council of Hemispheric Affairs (COHA) this spring. FYI, COHA's internships usually have 10 applicants for every vacancy.
What really sets this book apart from other internship books is that it's written from a student's perspective. Not only does Antoine Moss have an array of high profile internships (NASA, FBI) to draw his experience from, but he shows that you don't necessarily need to be on the honor roll to land a prestigious internship (although it certainly does help). There's definitely an art behind searching for an internship and this book will give you all the tips that you need to do it successfully.

180 Degrees Review

180 Degrees
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
180 Degrees is a treasure. It's one of those books that leave an impression - forever. Reading this book is time well spent, I'm so grateful I stumbled upon it. I consider Robert a close friend of mine now; anyone who reads his story will feel that way. I know him better than I know most people in my life just from reading his book. His honest portrayal of the tribulations he endured as a teenage drug addict are terrifying, especially for a mother. His story is so real and so intense that it was like being there as well. I found myself really caring for Robert and wanting so badly for him to be OK. I actually cried when he walked into the rooms of AA and knew he was home. It was so moving.
The fact that today he's successful in every respect brings me so much joy and hope. I love it that he is unselfishly sharing his recipe for success with the rest of us by revealing his Eight Equities. Robert is obviously a very wise and genuinely caring man. He's got the kind of insight that only comes from having lived two distinctively different lives. I think it's fantastic that he's opened himself up like he has with the intent of helping others - not just those suffering from the disease of addiction, but everyone who's seeking to have it all. Thanks for letting us know you, Robert, and thanks for the inspiration! This is a great read!
