The 21 Most Powerful Minutes In A Leader's Day: Revitalize Your Spirit And Empower Your Leadership Review

The 21 Most Powerful Minutes In A Leader's Day: Revitalize Your Spirit And Empower Your Leadership
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
John C. Maxwell has written a book here that will deepen your appreciation for The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and encourage you to live those laws in practical, yet spiritually-significant ways. Whether you are a parent, pastor, priest, lay leader of a Sunday School, head of a nonprofit foundation, CEO of a business, or simply work at your career, you will find important insights here from the greatest leaders and failures in the Bible.
The book is organized around the 21 irrefutable laws. Each chapter describes a way to use the material for 5 days during a week. You have a study lesson for 4 days, including a daily meditation question, and then a 5th day for taking action. Each lesson can be pursued in a few minutes. After 5 months, you will find yourself living closer to the ideal as a leader. Think of this as a handbook for implementation that includes all the theory you need, as well. Even if you did not read the earlier book from 1998, you can read, understand, and apply the lessons from this one.
Let me briefly summarize the laws and the Biblical analogies for you:
The Law of THE LID -- Leadership ability determines your effectiveness (compares Saul and David)
The Law of INFLUENCE -- True measures of influence are important(Joshua)
The Law of NAVIGATION -- Chart the right course (Nehemiah)
The Law of E.F. HUTTON -- When the real leader speaks, people listen (Samuel)
The Law of RESPECT -- People naturally follow leaders stronger than themselves (Deborah)
The Law of INTUITION -- Leaders evaluate everything with a leadership bias (Jethro)
The Law of MAGNETISM -- Who you are is who you attract (Elijah)
The Law of CONNECTION -- Touch a heart before you ask for a hand (Rohoboam)
The Law of THE INNER CIRCLE -- A leader's potential is determined by those closest to her or him (David)
The Law of EMPOWERMENT -- Only serious leaders give power to others (Barnabas)
The Law of REPRODUCTION -- It takes a leader to raise up a leader (Moses and Joshua)
The Law of BUY-IN -- People buy in to the leader, then the vision (Gideon)
The Law of VICTORY -- Leaders find a way for the team to win (Josiah)
The Law of THE BIG MO -- Momentum is the leader's best friend (Solomon)
The Law of PRIORITIES -- Activity is not necessarily accomplishment (Peter)
The Law of SACRIFICE -- Give up to go up (Moses)
The Law of TIMING -- When is as important as what to do and where to go (Esther)
The Law of EXPLOSIVE GROWTH -- To add growth, lead followers . . . to multiply growth, lead leaders (Paul)
The Law of LEGACY -- Lasting value is measured by succession (Jesus)
As a lifelong student of leadership (especially among CEOs of public companies), I heartily endorse these principles. They will be very beneficial in encouraging lasting growth that will also nurture the souls of those who serve in these families, religious groups, organizations and enterprises.
Even if you are not a particularly religious person, I think you will find it enjoyable to revisit these well-known stories from the Scriptures. Each chapter refers you to the relevant Biblical texts if you would like to read them directly.
If you are a religious person, you will probably also enjoy using the prayers that are outlined in the chapters to help you find guidance.
To give you a flavor of the book's organization, let's look at the Law of THE LID. For the first day, you focus on the principle that every person has the potential to be a leader. For the second day, you focus on that idea that every leader has lids. On the third day, you think about the idea that some lids can be lifted by leaders. On the fourth day, you concentrate on the concept that some lids have to be lifted by someone other than the leader. Also, few leaders let that happen. Then on the fifth day, you have actions to take in each of these four areas. The ideas are very powerful and the implementation steps are simple and useful.
I heartily encourage you to pursue this book and its lessons! You will find the improvements within yourself and around you to be irresisibly good!

Courageous Leadership Review

Courageous Leadership
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have lived an hour south of Willow Creek most of my life. My father, a pastor, goes there almost weekly to get refreshed and then drives the hour home with new ideas from the Holy Spirit. We are both saddened by the vast numbers of people who criticize Hybels and Willow Creek without knowing their heartbeat or, suprisingly, even stepping foot on the churches main campus.
Courageous Leadership is a book that will act as a portrait of the heartbeat of Pastor Hybels and what makes him tick. It is also a book that acts as a tremendous source for church leaders of all shades and descripitions, even if you are not a pastor.
Covered in this 252 page book are the following....
* Finding leaders who have chemistry and who fit with your current team.
* Establishing clear goals for everyone, and making them tangible.
* Excellence in church is a must. He discusses how people will use excellence in their worldly jobs, but have a hard time using those same critical methods for the kingdom of God.
* The vitality of vision and recasting that vision.
* The importance of celebration and giving honor to church workers, especially volunteers. Hybels tells of a story on page 175 in which all the volunteers were honored in a quasi-parade in which they all marched onto the stage as the church cheered them on. One of Willow's pastors, John Ortberg and drama leader Nancy Beach, acted the parts of Regis and Kathy Lee as they described each ministry group as they marched by.
* Praying to become like Biblical warriors and adopting the best attributes of people like Esther, Joshua, and David.
* Emulating the tenacity of Christ and the Apostle Paul.
* The importance of saying no to certain things and ideas in order to use your energy on what God really wants in your life.
* The importance of staying focused and cleaning up our own secret, inner problems first and foremost.
* The crucial importance of finding a team that is big on character, competence, and chemistry.
I found it interesting that nowhere in this book does Hybels ask leaders to emulate Willow Creek's worship style or vision methodology. He does, however, ask leaders to emulate his own dependence on the living God through different forms of prayer and team-building, accountability, as well as seeking out what our own gifts are while utilizing them where we're at.
Hybels also discusses the importance of getting away from the church at times to be alone with his family and the Lord. I thought this part of the book was probably the best because he talks about how it has revolutionized his own life and turned his children, instead of turning on the faith, into dynamic lovers of the Lord. The summer break, as he calls it, is something that all leaders need in some form or another. All-in-all, Courageous Leadership is a great book for Christian leaders of any sort, not just pastors.

I attended this training session in person, and purchased the CD's from Amazon to share with team mates who were not able to go. While I believe the CD's are a good reinforcement and reminder for me.... alone, they lack meaning in many areas and would be weak training at best. This is mostly a recording of a live training session, without the benefit of the workbooks or group interaction.

The MBA is probably the hottest ticket among the current university graduate degree offerings--every year, more than 120,000 students enroll in MBA programs in the United States, and the estimates in Europe do not lag far behind. In addition, job prospects have never looked better for business school graduates; corporations are hiring more business school graduates every year, and compensating them more handsomely. The Future of the MBA provides a sorely needed detailed and systematic review of the major contemporary debates on management education. At the same time, it makes a striking new proposal that will certainly have an impact in business schools: that managers need to develop a series of qualitative tacit skills which could be appropriately developed by integrative curricula brought from different disciplines, including sociology, philosophy, and other social sciences. Moldoveanu and Martin, both involved in the greatly respected integrative business education program at the Rotheman School of Management, provide a guide on how to design a reliable integrated program for management students. One of the main assets of the book is that it relies not just on speculative thinking, but on real life experience, and that it also includes case studies that will appeal to practicing managers. As an authoritative reference on MBA education, it will appeal to faculty and staff of business schools, as well as students in related fields like education and public policy.

Average Reviews:

This book is well organized and will give you all the helpful tips you'll need to have an edge over everyone else that's looking for an internship. It speaks to high school students and college students specifically, but it can benefit anyone that's searching for a job. The book offers a lot of sound practical advice and really illustrates how you can best present yourself to future employers.
I used this book when I was looking for an internship in Washington D.C., so I can speak from experience that the advice from this book really does work. After I sent out all my application materials, I literally landed a highly competitive internship within 48 HOURS! Thanks to the advice in Learn to CEO Style, I'll be interning at the Council of Hemispheric Affairs (COHA) this spring. FYI, COHA's internships usually have 10 applicants for every vacancy.
What really sets this book apart from other internship books is that it's written from a student's perspective. Not only does Antoine Moss have an array of high profile internships (NASA, FBI) to draw his experience from, but he shows that you don't necessarily need to be on the honor roll to land a prestigious internship (although it certainly does help). There's definitely an art behind searching for an internship and this book will give you all the tips that you need to do it successfully.

He has interned on Capitol Hill, with the FBI, and NASA. Moss co-interned with celebrities and played an integral role in solving a federal law enforcement case.

El libro es bastante interesante, pero si alguien desea leerlo más vale que lo haga en inglés, ya que la traducción (al menos la que he leído yo que es de Hubert Valverde) es tan lamentable que leerla se hace desagradable. 360-Degree Leadership: Preaching to Transform Congregations Review

360-Degree Leadership: Preaching to Transform Congregations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Michael Quicke's book on leadership and preaching is signficant and applicable for pastors. His writing is sourced in Scripture, prayer and in the counsel of other experts on leadership. He has clearly lived this type of leadership and pastoring. He shares his own experiences of learning through trials and blessings.
I think readers can take insights from this book and immediately apply them to their ministry. Quicke emphasizes that leadership is compatible and should be a part of preaching to the congregation. He shows how preaching is the tool/expression that God has chosen especially to guide and transform his people. Too often, he says, preaching and leadership have been seen as two distinct activities rather than one in the same.
Quicke teaches on preaching to effect transformation. He uses illustrations and models, along with practical steps for preachers to take. At times, I felt overwhelmed with the challenge he presents, but he continually turns readers' reliance to the Holy Spirit who is the One who empowers us to preach and lead.

Leadership books and seminars notwithstanding, many pastors remain unclear on how to effectively lead their congregations. Some even believe that preaching needs to take a backseat to leadership. Dismissing such comparisons as artificial, pastor and professor Michael Quicke notes how the Scriptures themselves reveal transformational leadership through proclamation by preachers. God's preachers, Quicke asserts, are inevitably his leaders. Powerful preaching and disciple-making leadership go hand in hand in the Bible, as well as in the contemporary church. Both are inspired by God's energy. The intentional pastor will be renewed to discern that biblical preaching is central to the events of church life and mission.

You Have A College Degree, Now What? Review

You Have A College Degree, Now What
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Too often, books and seminars feed off the high that people get from thinking they can conquer the world overnight simply because someone tells them that it's possible. "You Have a College Degree, Now What?" will not deliver this kind of high because it stays within reality and addresses real issues with realistic solutions. It doesn't claim to make you a millionaire overnight, but rather hammers home the need to face reality head-on and make something happen with the education that was earned after years of hard work and persistence. I hope more college graduates get wind of this book before settling for anything short of their full potential.

This is one of the best and most practical books that I've every read on leadership. It one of only a handful of books on leading up (your boss) and leading across (fellow employees). Most books are on leading down (those who report to the boss), but only a very small portion of any organization is in that position.

In his nearly thirty years of teaching leadership, John Maxwell has encountered this question again and again: How do I apply leadership principles if I'm not the boss? In The 360 Degree Leader Workbook, Maxwell addresses that very question and takes the discussion even further. You don't have to be the main leader, asserts Maxwell, to make significant impact in your organization. Good leaders are not only capable of leading their followers but are also adept at leading their superiors and their peers.

Debunking myths and shedding light on the challenges, John Maxwell offers specific principles for Leading Down, Leading Up, and Leading Across. 360-Degree Leaders can lead effectively, regardless of their position in an organization. By applying Maxwell's principles, you will expand your influence and ultimately be a more valuable team member.

Average Reviews:

My company provided us with this book in a recent training. Most of the trainings are boring and something memorable for only a short time. This book is not that. The simple metaphor used in the introduction, and the entire basis of the book is very meaningful and easy to see in action. Today I hear so many people complain and feel that they are entitled to things instead of taking responsibility for their actions. This book shows that the smallest increment of effort can have positive effects not only on your professional life, but all aspects. This book uses real life examples that are easily relatable and prove the point. This is a quick read, but definitely worth the price and definitely applicable to life. I highly recommend this book.

The 360 Degree Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization Review

The 360 Degree Leader: Developing Your Influence from Anywhere in the Organization
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I have read and then reviewed most of Maxwell's previously published books which offer solid content, if not head-snapping revelations. For The 360º Leader, he has selected an important but neglected business subject: the middle manager who has far more responsibility than authority, who struggles to earn respect from her or his peers while accommodating the needs and interests of superiors, and who frequently feels overworked and under appreciated. That situation is even worse when reporting to the kind of pedant whom Jean Lipman-Blumen describes in The Allure of Toxic Leaders. As usual, Maxwell has organized his material with almost mechanical precision: a separate chapter devoted to each of seven "Myths" in Section I, to each of seven "Challenges" in Section II, to each of seven "Lead-Up Principles" in Section III, to each of seven "Lead-Across Principles" in Section IV...you get the idea. Perhaps because of Covey's influence, seven remains a favorite number to Maxwell and to other authors of business books.
I do not assert that Maxwell has a "cookie cutter" mentality. Rather, to suggest that he demonstrates in this book far greater facility with bromides than he does with insights. He is a conscientious recycler of ideas, especially those expressed in his earlier books. I found much in The 360º Leader that is clever but very little that is original. I appreciate the "Review" at the conclusion of each of the five sections. I regret that he merely lists the seven whatevers without annotations which would have made a periodic review of key points more rewarding.
With regard to this book's title, I think it has far greater potentiality than what Maxwell offers. It is indeed highly desirable for all managers -- not only those in the shrinking middle of once hierarchical organizations -- to maintain a synoptic (i.e. a 360º) perspective on the business world which surrounds them. Peripheral vision is no longer sufficient. Moreover, it is also important to "look" up -- at goals yet to be reached or visions yet to be fulfilled, for example -- and to "look" down to make certain that one's feet are on solid ethical ground. In my opinion, Maxwell fails to demonstrate a 360º perspective on his subject: how to develop (positive and productive) influence from anywhere in the organization.
There is also the matter of how one defines "leadership." Presumably Maxwell agrees with me that it is not dependent on one's rank, social status, title, salary, etc. Rather, it is the result of natural talents and innate qualities which have been carefully developed, indeed nourished. (Maxwell has much of value to say about that in other books.) Add some good luck, fortuitous timing, and a spoonful of "street smarts" and you have someone whom others respect and trust, someone whom others will voluntarily follow. What I think Maxwell means by "leadership" is actually initiative, one of the qualities most highly praised by Napoleon Hill who stressed the importance of "going the extra mile" and by Dale Carnegie when explaining how to win friends and influence people. Maxwell acknowledges neither in this book.
I have indicated my disappointment in a book I was so eager to read. Presumably it will be of interest and value to some people. If so, good for them as well as for Maxwell. However, I suspect there are others who need thought-provoking insights rather than the broad generalities on which so much of Maxwell's narrative depends. To them I strongly recommend James O'Toole's Creating the Good Life and Michael Ray's The Highest Goal. Neither is an "easy read." Fair enough. Neither are many of the situations we face in our lives each day.

In his nearly thirty years of teaching leadership, John Maxwell has encountered this question again and again: How do I apply leadership principles if I'm not the boss?
