The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business Review

The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business
Average Reviews:

Having graduated from a top business school in Canada, I can safety say that I could have thrown out all my textbooks and used the money I spent on tuition to actually START a business, and used this book as a replacement to my business education.
What makes this book warrant such a strong statement is the fact that it's a comprehensive synthesis of all of the concepts you need to know to understand business inside and out. There are no complex models to learn or outdated theories to memorize just to get marks or pass tests. What you get is a comprehensive set of "mental models" or heuristics on all of the sub parts of creating, operating and working within a business. Why is this important? Because a mental model is like a rule of thumb for any possible scenario you might encounter in running a business - from value creation to delivery to marketing to finance. It helps you look at the world through the lens of what's most important (and thus no fluff to distract you) which ultimately helps you to ask the right questions and ultimately helps guide you to make the right decisions about maneuvering in business. These principles are universal and applicable for small business start ups to Fortune 50 CEOs because they're based on business fundamentals (the mental models) and not just tactics found in most other books.
In addition to a sound business knowledge what this book has is a very extensive section on working with yourself and with others. Achieving great strides in business is sometimes less about knowing the business aspect but more about conquering yourself - either with productivity, with working with people or with overcoming doubts and fears - all things I'm finding out as I work on my own venture. After having read dozens of psychology and self help books I can also say without a doubt that the section on working with yourself trumps them all. Josh delivers a well researched practical guide to understanding how you brain works and how to work with it rather than against it, so you can actually go ahead and apply the concepts in the rest of the book.
Highly recommended if you wish to know more about business, are thinking of starting your own business, or are thinking about joining an MBA program to climb the corporate ladder. Buying this book could end up saving a mortgage worth of student debt, so what have you really got to lose?

The Best 301 Business Schools, 2010 Edition (Graduate School Admissions Guides) Review

The Best 301 Business Schools, 2010 Edition (Graduate School Admissions Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are considering an MBA, it is somewhat challenging to find much information on business schools below the top tier. Sure, there are U.S. News and Businessweek rankings. But, those are just compiled metrics regarding the top notch schools that educate only a very small fraction of all MBAs.
This book fills this informational gap beautifully. The 301 schools it includes probably captures all the American schools worth considering. It includes schools with a broad range of selectivity from Harvard to third tier State schools.
As the author states within this guide, "there is no one best MBA school, but there is one best MBA school for you." Just like college it is all about the fit and the match. Match up with a school that reflects your profile and skill level (so you can actually get in) and that fits your objectives so you get the job opportunities you were looking for.
My favorite part of the guide was Part I: All About Business Schools. This section gives you an up to date take on all the current trends, what it takes to be admitted and succeed, what such schools are really like.
The profiles on every schools are pretty thorough. It allows you to quickly develop a list of potential schools and compare them. In turn, refining your list using an Excel spreadsheet will allow you to sort them and benchmark them in many different ways focusing on the metrics that are most important for you. The information allows you to readily assess the match (your chances of getting in) and the fit (the ensuing opportunities).
This guide will save you a lot of time and will provide an excellent foundation on researching this subject.

The Best 282 Business Schools, 2007 (Graduate School Admissions Guides) Review

The Best 282 Business Schools, 2007 (Graduate School Admissions Guides)
Average Reviews:

This book gives some information that can be helpful
1. A whole lot of stats (Academic rating, GPA ave, GMAT ave, # of students, student faculty ratio, joint degress, financial facts, and a lot more!)
2. A short description/info on academics, career and placement, student life environment, admissions, + more of every school.
Why I don't like it:
1. Most are just US schools. I expected more schools from Europe, Asia, Australia.. There are still a number of non-US schools. But I bought this book to have an idea of how other schools outside US are.
2. They are all MBA programs. I chose this book among others because it said "Best 282 Business Schools," not "Best 282 MBA programs." I intentionally excluded books with "MBA" on their title from my shopping list. There are a lot more programs than the MBA(Ms Finance, Ms Marketing, Ms International Business etcetc.) Business schools are not just about MBA programs. I was expecting see more of them from the book. The only non-MBA programs that they list are the joint-degrees available per school. If you're looking for an MBA program, this won't be a problem.
3. Academic rankings are........ absurd. I couldn't believe they gave University of Chicago just 78 points in academic ranking. Businessweek ranked that school #1, ahead of Harvard/Wharton/Stanford. They could have at least given Chicago an 85.
One final note, if you plan to use this book to gather research information for your essays in top 30 schools, this won't be enough. You'll still need to interview/talk to the adcom, teachers, students or alumnus/alumna.

Best 290 Business Schools, 2008 Edition (Graduate School Admissions Guides) Review

Best 290 Business Schools, 2008 Edition (Graduate School Admissions Guides)

My primary complaint about this book is that much of the information is out of date. For instance, schools' tuition costs are often significantly different than those directly stated on their websites. Some of the information about the culture is helpful, but could easily be discerned from reading information about schools online or perhaps in other books. A lot of the other information is intuitive or so cursory to be useless.
Better to look at information on the Business Week B-School website or other internet resources or just go to the bookstore and simply glance at the schools you're considering. Absolutely not worth owning.

How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs, 5th Edition Review

How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs, 5th Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started GMAT Club - one of the largest MBA communities and this book is probably the most often referenced. However, it is by no means perfect and you can get the most out of it, if you set your expectations correctly. Here are my thoughts:
Pros:
- All-in-one book (covers every stage of the application process)
- Includes 67 Real Essays covering 31 specific Topics (however, there are some really old ones)
- Great sections on Recommendations (do's and dont's as well as what is appropriate), also good section on interviews.
- Has fantastic little insights (framed sections) that provide additional insight from admissions officers of schools on various topics such as gmat score split, recommendations, retaking gmat, etc
- Sets the proper expectation in terms of time needed for the process. Most people underestimate the time needed to take the gmat, write essays, proofread them, and then have time for a job/family.
- I found insights from admissions to be very valuable (in many sections of the book). Most of the time, they don't tell you some big secret, but get a confirmation about a certain process (waitlist for example or application review) is very helpful and comforting that you are on the right trackCons:
- Does not provide any information about schools specifics (???). It is called how to get into the top business schools but actually does not cover the top schools in detail
- Extra stuff (starts from Why MBA & types of MBA programs and ends with post-acceptance information, though frankly, for most, it will be the substance in between that will matter the most). Only about 400 pages out of 600 are the meat, which is plenty actually
- Some outdated parts that have changed since
- Some Essays are outdated (some are 10 years old - ouch). They are also really long. In the past 5 years the length has been cut down to just a page or even less.Bottom Line: Good book to get an intro to MBA Application but does not provide any insights how to get into the top programs (or info about them) and has some outdated information (nothing dangerous). If you are serious about getting into top 10 or top 20, You will still need to do a lot of research on your own or possibly recruit an admissions consultant to maximize your chances. Use it for preliminary research/craft your strategy - definitely helpful but take it with a grain of salt and keep in mind - the other 50,000 applicants probably read it too. Some Other Suggestions & Thoughts:
1. Plan ahead - draft a schedule and stick to it
2. Find the program that fits you best. People get disappointed even with a Top 5 school. It is important to take from the school and also give
3. Understand your strengths and weaknesses - be real with yourself and with the admissions. Don't lie or make up things - I know it may seem like a better short term strategy but it backfires in the long run
4. Know your story and tell it well - to get to the top, you need to have a story that goes through your essays, recommendations, interview, and resume
5. Don't copy/plagiarize any essays - you won't be along and those people are quickly picked out and kicked out. You won't have a second chance. Also if your AWA essays are under 4.5 and your school essays are perfect, that will be a red flag. Please let me know if any questions about this book, I respond to comments.
Best Regards,
BB, MBA, GMAT 750
Founder of GMAT Club.

Your MBA Game Plan: Proven Strategies for Getting Into the Top Business Schools Review

Your MBA Game Plan: Proven Strategies for Getting Into the Top Business Schools
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am applying to business school this fall, and just
got this book a week ago after hearing about it. I
have already read it most of the way through, and I
can say that it is DEFINITELY worth it. I have also
read How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs and
I can say that this book helps you at least
as much as that one, in less than half the length. I
actually consider that one to be good, but this one to
be even better.
I really like how the authors describe a framework for
getting your story together. I wonder if everyone will
follow their advice to the letter, but I think they
would benefit by doing so. The authors start by
describing their framework, and then step through each
part of it throughout the rest of the book. Like I
mentioned, I have read nearly the whole thing (which I
couldn't do with the other books I bought).
My favorite aspects of this book:
1) Advice on specific schools - Not everything that
they tell you about a school is earth-shattering, but
it's all good info. This is important info to consider
when you apply to any school. A friend of mine at a
Top 10 school read what they wrote about her school
and agreed with what they said.
2) Interview prep - All of my target schools require interviews,
and I really like the framework that they use in this section to help you
prepare for the kinds of questions you will probably be asked.
3) Advice for applicants based on their backrounds -
This section is fairly short, but still contains good
advice to think about as you write your essays, etc.
4) Essay analysis and advice - Other books also do
this, but this book does a good job of breaking down
essays by type and letting you know what schools tend
to look for.
They also give good general advice like making sure
that you and your recommenders are on the same page in
terms of what to emphasize, etc. And the GMAT section
looks like it has good advice, although that's the one
section that I sort of skipped, since I already took
the test.
My only suggestions for improvement would be to expand
the section that gives advice by type of applicant.
And, they give advice for the top 30 schools, but not
everyone is targeting those schools. So, maybe
covering the top 50 would be better, although that of
course would make it a lot longer.
All in all, definitely worth picking up, especially if
you want a smaller book that gives you the same advice
that the bigger, more expensive ones give. These guys
seem to know their stuff.

Businessweek Guide to the Best Business Schools (Business Week Guide to the Best Business Schools, 7th ed) Review

Businessweek Guide to the Best Business Schools (Business Week Guide to the Best Business Schools, 7th ed)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I confess to being a professor at one of the schools mentioned in this book as the "Best". Business schools have developed a love/hate relationship with this book because although it contains a lot of good, thoughtful information, some people use it for the wrong reasons.
Make a distinction between the RANKINGS and the extended essay-type descriptions contained on the top scools. The RANKINGS tell you (possibly) two things: they tell you (maybe, sometimes) about the quality of the results the graduates get, and they tell you....well they tell you whether you will get bragging rights to your friends. In other words, the rankings have developed their own prestige which is SEPARATE from the issue of whether they have anything to do with quality.
So consider the rankings with caution...do you need the reassurance of a very high ranking....or do you really care about quality of program? This book actually tells you a great deal about the quality of the program, including everything from details about the curriculum, what they are looking for in admissions, which teachers are held in highest esteem, and general comments from recent students. THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE NUMBER. It's related to the number, but it's not the same thing.
Remember, however, not to stop with this book: the information given in any edition will start to get inaccurate before it hits the bookstore. I can think of 5 or 6 top schools with new deans within the past year or two. Perusing through the book I see a good number of "top faculty" that either have already gone on to another institution, or are non-tenured faculty on short-term contracts, who may be gone by the time you get there. Even the curricula change pretty quickly. Back up your reading of this book with school's web sites, visits, talks with alumns, etc.
After all, the question you really want the answer to is not "do grads of School W make more money and have better careers than graduates of School Y?", it's "Will I MYSELF have a better career at School W than School Y." Rather than worry about the ranking of the school you get into, find the school that works for YOU. Finally, I see other reviewers saying "this book got me into the BigBucks school." I think that reviewer's intelligence, personality, and experience got him in. If he hadn't gotten in to BigBucks, he would still be smart and hardworking, and the school that got him would have been lucky. And (for the record), the number at our school is just great!

What the Best MBAs Know: How to Apply the Greatest Ideas Taught in the Best Business Schools
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a business school refresher b/c it thoroughly covers the all the topics. You'll find yourself saying "oh, yes, I remember that!"
The approach throughout the book is to highlight "the big questions" around each topic, then discuss them in detail. I've found this a great way to hit the just high points when I want to refresh myself and to have a more in-depth read when I want more.
It has become a great desk reference for me. A co-worker just finishing an MBA has also read it and found it a great complement to his MBA program.
While all the chapters are well-written and full of information, the chapter on macroeconomics was outstanding. I was surprised to learn in the book how few of the top business schools teach macroeconomics. Fortunately, the book covers it well.
Great book.

How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs Review

How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am actually a professor at one of the top MBA programs in the country. My students tell me it is getting harder and harder to get into the best programs. That's especially true just now that the economy is bad - everyone decides to drop out of the economy for a couple of years, at the same time. Our applications are up 40-50%.
So yes, you could use some advice, and some of Montauk's is OK. But you should remember that NO book can change some basic facts about you: your GPA. Your work experience. Your basic intelligence. If you do not score well on EVERY one of these, you will probably not end up in what the book calls a "top" program.
Don't let that get you down - there are a lot of great programs out there. Instead of obsessing about whether you will get into Wharton (or whatever), obsess about learning more about LOTS of program, to find the one where you will FIT the best. This book does not really offer you any help in the way of describing the pluses and minuses of the various programs, so don't make this the first MBA admissions book you get.
That said, I found some useful pointers in this book, particularly when it comes to recommendations. Pick your recommendation writers wisely (make sure they know how to write!), and PREP them. Remind them what makes you special, send them a resume, etc. I write a dozen or more letters a year. The students who give me more information about themselves make it easy for me to help them stand out.
Give yourself enough time to take the GMATs more than once in case you are not happy the first set of results.
And (this one is mine, not Montauks) don't be in a hurry to do it this year if you don't have to. If you will be able to tell a better story about your work experience 12 months from now, wait to apply. Stronger work experience = stronger chance of getting in.
So to summarize - this book is OK but a book with detailed info about programs would be better. Concentrate on finding the right program for you instead of getting up high in the Business Week rankings. Pay attention to your recommendation letters.
Maybe you won't have to read the book now that you've read the review ;-).
Good luck!

The Best Business Schools' Admissions Secrets: A Former Harvard Business School Admissions Board Member Reveals the Insider Keys to Getting In Review

The Best Business Schools' Admissions Secrets: A Former Harvard Business School Admissions Board Member Reveals the Insider Keys to Getting In
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have "The Best Business Schools Admissions Secrets" and successfully used its concepts religiously through the application process last year.
The book's author Chioma helps one really identify and define one's 'brand' so that there is a consistent thread throughout one's application. The author helps you craft a great application from stories made up of choices you've made, extracurriculars you've taken a critical role in, relationships you build, to interesting situations you've experienced. She debunks myths and provides insight into the mysterious admissions office and what they are looking for (helping applicants identify strong personal stories of impact vs. stories that are unimpressive). Additionally, Chioma covers all aspects important to the process including resume, interviews, and recommenders which are crucial to supporting your candidacy.
I got into 3 out of 4 of the schools I applied to and will be attending HBS next year. Thus, I highly recommend the book!

This book gives you more in-depth reports (6-8 pages on each school) than any other MBA book out there. It's got all the info you might want about admissions, student life, academics, etc. I haven't tried the CD-ROM, but it looks like it would be useful in helping to choose an MBA program.

BusinessWeek Guide to The Best Business Schools Review

BusinessWeek Guide to The Best Business Schools
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nothing even comes close, people. First of all, the descriptions in this guide are more extensive and accurate than those found in other guides (with, perhaps, a few "niche" exceptions, such as guides focusing on a very small number of schools, i.e. top 10). Arguably, Business Week is "the guide" to use for accurate rankings. Their methodology relies upon ratings of the "consumers" of b-schools, students and recruiters. While no ranking methodology is perfect, I feel most comfortable with the one that includes opinon of the consumers of the particular "product."
Here's what you'll find between the covers:
The book starts with a fairly extensive section on why you would want an MBA and how to get into the best schools. If you don't know anything about the process of applying to b-school, this is a good start, but it is just that--a start. Rankings and the description of BW methodology (including questions asked and a list of schools with top and bottom scores on each question) complete the introductory section.
Most of the book, however, is focused on descriptions of programs that made top 30, the runners-up, and non-us schools. These descriptions include basic quantitative measures like fees, student body composition, and admissions numbers. I found the statistics on teaching methods employed by different schools particularly useful (and this is something important that most other guides/rankings pay very little attention to).
The actual descriptions are very extensive. They cover virtually all aspects of a program, including academics, clubs/activities, social life, placement, and alumni networks. The well written text is supplemented by quotes from faculty and students, which is a nice touch. At the end of each school's section, you'll find detailed information on placement, top recruiters, outstanding faculty, student testimonials, as well as some useful tips straight from the admissions office.
If you're looking to get a b-school guide that includes rankings, exhaustive descriptions, and some good advice, look no further. There might be other books out there that will provide more detailed program descriptions for a smaller number of programs, or books that will give more substantial advice about the application process, but there is no one book that does as many things as well as this one. Buy it!
