Top Careers for History Graduates Review

Top Careers for History Graduates
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is very useful for anyone who is a history major or is thinking of majoring in history. The first section outlines some general, but important information. It talks about writing an effective resume. It also discusses different steps to take to become successful depending on what stage in education you are in (high school, college, or graduate school). There are interviews with different people who are already working in fields related to history which are useful. The second section, which is much larger than the first, describes 35 different careers that a history degree can be of use in. The careers range from corporate jobs, government jobs, teaching, and museum jobs. The book describes many different aspects of the career, such as expected salaries, how fast that segment of the job-market is growing, what level of education and other skills are needed for the job, etc. Overall, this book is a great resource for people looking to use their history degrees to make a living. It also provides other online and print sources that could be useful in the job hunt.

A PhD Is Not Enough: A Guide To Survival In Science Review

A PhD Is Not Enough: A Guide To Survival In Science
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just as the title said, a PhD is not enough! Getting a PhD is just the beginning of a scientific career. There are many important "life" skills to learn. This book is unique in that it tells you what you need to do after you have your PhD.
Another very precious thing that this book reveals is that going directly to academia after your PhD is probably not the best way to establish yourself as a scientist. There are too many duties (teaching, handling the students, departmental meetings, etc) that demand your time that you won't enough time to do the main tasks - bring in a grant, reseach and publish. A better way is to go to an industrial or govermental lab and establish your scientific reputation there. You won't have the distractions and can concentrate on getting grant, research and publish. After you are established, you can go to academia easily, if you so choose.
Finally, the author reveals another big secret - pursue your long term research goal by a sequence of small projects.
This book is an excellent and indispensible guide for budding scientists. Get this book if you are serious about becoming a scientist. Highly recommended.

Bringing the key survival skills into focus, A Ph.D. Is Not Enough! proposes a rational approach to establishing yourself as a scientist. It offers sound advice of selecting a thesis or postdoctoral adviser, choosing among research jobs in academia, government laboratories, and industry, preparing for an employment interview, and defining a research program. This book will help you make your oral presentations effective, your journal articles compelling, and your grant proposals successful. A Ph.D. Is Not Enough should be required reading for anyone on the threshold of a career in science.

Great Jobs for Political Science Majors Review

Great Jobs for Political Science Majors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is really insightful to those who are still earning their undergrad degrees. It offers many tips on resume writing, networking, and assessing ones own skills. If I were a junior in college this would have been a great source of information and inspiration. However, for someone who has been out of school for a short period of time, it doesn't offer much in the way of career guidance. It does offer good tips on graduate school and how to find the program that is right for you depending on what type of job you are interested in after. It also lists all the professional associations for a political scientist.

Becoming an Architect: A Guide to Careers in Design Review

Becoming an Architect: A Guide to Careers in Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is really nothing but a bunch of interview questions and the answers architects give to them, which isn't a bad thing. There are several pictures of architectural structures, several drawings, and some diagrams of buildings as well. Instead of reading a concise summary of the authors research you instead get the raw data (for the most part) and draw your own conclusions from it.
I kept seeing a few similar traits over and over in the architects the author interviewed and this led me to not become an architect.
I did find it rather interesting that the author is NOT an architect and never was. But you don't have to be something in order to research it and write about it now do you? Of course not. The author did however pursue the field of architecture so they do have some first hand knowledge to draw on.
A very good book in my opinion, it was worth the purchase.

The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook: More Than 300 Things You Can Do With a Law Degree, Updated and Revised Review

The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook: More Than 300 Things You Can Do With a Law Degree, Updated and Revised
Average Reviews:

This book, like the one by Deborrah Aaron, is at first promising, but ends up as mere fluff. One such author spoke at my law school. Her advice was a joke and a waste of my time and money. These authors are all making money doing what? Selling these books and helping the rest of us "find our passion" in life. The law books are no different than any "resume builder book" you can find for 1/10 of the price. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! These law books all have one thing in common -- they take you through endless ridiculous skills assessments and other "exercises" designed to "identify your passions," "explore your skills," and have you making stupid charts listing all your best and worst qualities, etc., etc. What every lawyer who wants out of the legal profession wants to know is this: What are the viable jobs where having legal experience or a law degree are going to put me above the rest of the applicants? How do I find those jobs? What are the obstacles I am going to face in trying to get my name in front of the key hiring person? What are the ups and downs of each career? And most importantly, how do I go about getting my foot in the right door? I realize knowing your skills is important, but I can do that with a standard resume builder book for much less time and money.

What to Do with Your History or Political Science Degree (Career Guides) Review

What to Do with Your History or Political Science Degree (Career Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I will more than likely be double majoring in history and government and was very worried about my potential career prospects after college. I thought the only thing that either major would allow me to do would be a teacher, lawyer, or journalist. (While the book does offer these three careers) This book offers great insight and breaks it down by job category about what either major can do and offers great resources with websites to research jobs, grad schools, law schools and internships. At the end of the book, there are Q&As with former political science and history majors about what careers they hold, how they got to where they are today, and advice to their fellow majors. The book is very useful and I would recommend to anyone not sure about what career path they are looking to pursue with a major in history or political science.
