Reprints of Old Rituals Review

With so many lodges/chapters/commanderies/valleys changing or adapting ritual to make it more interesting or less time consuming, degree candidates are more beholden than ever to the brothers who confer their degrees. What changes were made? What's been left out? Has the ritual been adapted faithfully? This book will answer those questions. The price isn't bad considering that Masonic books tend to be a bit expensive.

In 1879 Albert Pike, Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction, USA, prepared and authorized for sale a collection of books 'for general distribution."Among these was also a collection of rituals, virtually unknown today. These included: 1) Degree of Master Mark Mason, being the work of the Grand Council of Princes of Jerusalem of South Carolina, and the oldest work extentanywhere; 2) The Wigan Ritual, of the Early Grand Encampment. 3) Grade, Mark Mason, Passed Master, and Royal Arch, Rite Ancient Maconnerie D'York.[Were originally translated from English into French, and used in the French West Indies in 1795.]; 4) Knights Templar, former English Ritual. 5) Grand Maitre Ecossais or Scottish Elder Master and Knight of St. Andrew, being the Fourth Degree of Ramsey. 6) Old Ceremony of Royal Arch Exaltation. This new book includes ALL of the above rituals in one volume. These rituals have become some of the scarcest items ever printed by the Supreme Council.Original copies now sell for between US $60 and US $100 each. All of these rituals are extremely important, each for unique reasons. The Master Mark Mason and Wigan Rituals are, for example, early, little-known versions of these degrees; the former lacking much of the Christian symbolism present today, and the latter (supplied by John Yarker), differing significantly from the current ritual. The MaConnerie D'Yorke rituals were obtained in New Orleans, and contain a wealth of historical information relative to their use, including references to Joseph Cerneau, who had long troubled the Southern Jurisdiction by his irregular branch the Scottish Rite. The 'former" EnglishKnights Templar ritual appears to be the authorized revision of 1851, upon which the current ritual is based. The Grand Maitre Ecossais degree is an Hermetic degree which contends that the essential 'secret" of Freemasonry is the Alchemical transmutation of the initiate

The Mysteries of Mithras: The Pagan Belief That Shaped the Christian World Review

The Mysteries of Mithras: The Pagan Belief That Shaped the Christian World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nabarz gives an interesting overview of the ancient historical origins of the early Mithra, and he is well suited to the task, given his background and knowledge of the area.
Then he takes us through history to the various peoples who worshipped Mithra(s), including the Romans. He, like most modern students, discounts earlier scholars like Franz Cumont, who saw a connection between earlier worshippers in Persia and those in Rome. This skepticism is, I believe, mistaken, and comes from a modernist view and perhaps an agenda, which is quickly revealed in later chapters.
That agenda is the "Wiccanizing" of Mithra in a so-called revivalist religion, which he details in the book. Using a dubiously-translated "liturgy" of ooos and ahs (which he tampers with, in the name of his new religion) He then introduces an ancient Female goddess, Anahita, into his non-historical pantheon. It's surprising that he doesn't call Mithras the "horned god" as other Wiccans do. The final blow is a description and photo of an "altar" which mimicks one that might be seen in any Wiccan's home.
In short, the attempt to Wiccanize Mithraism is a dubious, spurious and laughable attempt to cash in on the current Earth-centered witch craze (the book is in the "new age" section of bookstores, not in religion or history.)
A far better overview of Mithras and His origins would be the Mysteries of Mithra, by Franz Cumont, a scholar who spent his entire life studying Mithras, and one which students of the New Age have been trying to "refute" and reinterpret for a generation. However, Cumont remains the towering figure in the field of Mithraic research.

One Degree Beyond: A Reiki Journey Into Energy Medicine: Your 21-Day Step-By-Step Guide to Relax, Open and Celebrate Review

One Degree Beyond: A Reiki Journey Into Energy Medicine: Your 21-Day Step-By-Step Guide to Relax, Open and Celebrate
Average Reviews:

Not since Bodo J. Baginski and Shalila Sharmon's book "Universal Life Energy" in 1988 has there been a book that has so much heart. JaneAnne Narrin's *One Degree Beyond: A REIKI Journey Into Energy Medicine* is a unique arrival on the literary scene - and one written directly from Heart.
Taking the methodology, a sublime methodology I might add, called *The Usui System of Natural Healing*, and how it can, with Intent, become one of the most powerful and effective ways to move Narrin, in "One Degree Beyond" shows how to put Reiki to work in one's life, indeed, even change the quality of one's life. For this she won the 1999 Visionary Award.
While the marketplace is awash with books on 'reiki' very few books, if any, explore the matter of personal transformation in conjunction with this simple practice, Reiki.
Narrin points out the place of Reiki in a living partnership with which one begins to have aa fuller and more resonant experience of Being Alive. And she does this in both a practical and eloquent way. In a sense, Reiki practice *is* pure channeling: when one has life experiences and by the relaxed observation of them brings forth insights that spring forth with intuition right from the heart of All That Is.
"One Degree Beyond. . ." is not a book teaching Reiki methodology per se (giving hand positions, and other data is more appropriate and accessible in a workshop setting,) but this book looks instead at the Essence of Reiki.
Having myself taught Reiki for many years, this (the Essence) is of special interest to me. I think whether one is a new or more advanced student, or knows little about this whole field of energetics and integrative therapy, Narrin's work engages the reader, always proposing new ways to look at things, including one's self.
Many, many books about Reiki that are out there these days just describe technical data. They appear to me to have limited ,if any, value - I think that one cannot really learn Reiki from a book. There is such a difference in depth and grace that one derives from the interaction between student and teacher.. .at least that is what my students tell me when they learn *The Usui System of Natural Healing, Reiki in conjunction with a personal transformation program called The ReikiTECH Workshop. After this intensive training, believe me, graduates of the workshop need not be reminded about technical data . . .and if one has not experienced Reiki training, method books are hardly going to attract the man on the street so-to-speak. The man on the street wantscpeace of mind. . .harmony. . .a way of feeling comfortable in his own skin. This is what "One Degree Beyond: A Reiki Journey Into Energy Medicine" is about . . .living an enriched life, plugging into Vital Life Force (which has never been so easy,) dissolving stress at its roots and moving into wellness (wholeness.)
In this regard, readers find Narrin's book to be rich with narrative and insight, and a practical interactive text. This can guide one to realise that, truly, the way forward for humanity is to get beyond "attachment to outcome" (having to always have things your own way) through the practice of Reiki, which engenders deep caring and attentiveness in the present moments of our lives. To 'participate in', rather than to be 'in control of' is a far more healthful and satisfying way of living. To be grateful for each moment as we walk through our lives, is to stand at the gateway to enlightenment. Here we may welcome an era of deep and abiding personal harmony to be enjoyed by each and every human being. So this is about *process* rather than the *results* . . .part of the paradigm shift as we move into the new millennium.

Witch School First Degree: Lessons in the Correllian Tradition Review

Witch School First Degree: Lessons in the Correllian Tradition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Witch School, First Degree by Rev. Donald Lewis-Highcorrell is the first book in a three-volume series that introduces readers to Correllian tradition Wicca. A fourth volume is dedicated to mastering the art of ritual. The goal of First Degree is to provide enough knowledge that the reader should be able to initiate themselves into the Craft by the end of the book. There is even a ritual provided for the Outer Court initiate, should they choose Self-Wiccaning.
Correllian Nativist Wicca was originally formed in 1879 by a woman of Scots-Cherokee ancestry, Orpheius Caroline. In 1979, after the Council of Elders appointed new leadership, the Correllian tradition was opened to the public. They began creating a series of correspondence courses, which became the lessons found between the covers of Witch School.
Witch School is formatted much like a textbook, with a total of twelve chaptered lessons (one for each month, for a year's worth of tutelage). Each chapter covers a new facet of the religion, from magic to stones and crystals. An exercise is then provided, with an introduction to a different god in each lesson. The chapter then closes on a series of review questions.
The lessons are straightforward and easy to follow. Most of the information is relevant to any tradition of Wicca, not just Correllian. As is common practice, a student becomes an initiate after one year of study. The book is set up perfectly to accomodate this schedule with the monthly lesson style.
For the person who has been reading up on the subject for a while, initially there may not appear to be a great deal of new information in Witch School, First Degree. It is aimed more at someone who is completely unfamiliar with the religion and would need step by step guidance. I'm sure the second and third volumes would be appropriate for those who already have some knowledge of the Craft. However, anyone can benefit from the exercises provided, regardless of mastery degree. The detailed history of the various forms of deity is also a benefit not found in many other books on the subject. Witch School, First Degree, in the least, could make an excellent reference book for any library or a comprehensive refresher course. I'm eager to begin reading Second Degree.

Excellent for tarot decks (can easily hold a standard size deck) or runes. Very soft. FYI, the picture almost makes inside look a little greenish silver or gray, it definitely is more silver in person (AND VERY NICE GRAY SILVER, very attractive). For those who are looking for an inexpensive rune or tarot bag (without it looking inexpensive) and like black and silver, this is your bag! Am definitely ordering more of these, would make a great gift for someone you know into small or regular sized oracle decks or runes. Oh, and vendor did a great job of packaging it and it even SMELLED nice and came with a little card.

Medicine Woman II: The Gift Review

Medicine Woman II: The Gift

I have 22 Medwyn Goodall CDs (He's released over 70) so I am a big fan of his music. Medicine Woman II, The Gift was one of the first purchased and is still one of my favorites. The original Medicine Woman is excellent and a New Age classic, but this follow-up is an order of magnitude better. It is hard to imagine that only one person is responsible for all of the music here. Goodall composed, arranged, performed, produced, mixed and mastered this CD. It is guitars, panpipes, and lots of percussion in almost an hour of lively but soothing music that sets you down in the middle of the Central American jungles and then carries you away. Rhythmical and catchy tunes inspired by the ancient Mayan culture expand on the ideas explored in the original Medicine Woman plus introduce some new ones. With touches of male and female choirs and synths in the background, the music has an uplifting mystical quality.

"Medicine Woman" -- Exotic, beautiful, joyous, uplifting, haunting music accompanied by Peruvian instruments. I bought this cd in a Goddess-spirituality shop a few years ago without having previously heard it. I was attracted by the stunning cover illustration of the Jaguar Shamaness. Well, the music is even more gorgeous than the illustration! Every track is wonderful. You can listen to it over and over. Here's ethnic music with an international appeal... my friends overseas have practically worn out the cassette I sent them. Strongly recommended!
