Exercise Physiology: Energy, Nutrition, and Human Performance Review

Exercise Physiology: Energy, Nutrition, and Human Performance
Average Reviews:

This book is a great help in understanding what is happening within the body conerning sports training and nutrition. It is based on uncountable research studies and presented in a very readable form with ample graphics illustrations. The book helped me not only to understand more, but also to improve fitness and even loose some weight. It goes very far beyond compared to what one gets told in fitness centers. The main approach of the book is based on energy considerations. Understanding how the body handles energy makes it possible to describe the effects of exercising and performance much more deeply. I would recommend this book to every exerciser, who likes to improve physically and understand background matters. Basically, it's a textbook for sports students. But people outside, like myself, can greatly benefit from it, as well.

The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants: Ethnopharmacology and Its Applications Review

The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants: Ethnopharmacology and Its Applications
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At over 7 pounds, this book is packed with information! The first 700 pages of it are individual profiles of a wide range of psychoactive plants and fungi--including info on their active constituents, history, usage, and cultivation. The remainder of the book is broken into two sections, one describing major classes of chemicals, and the other focused on plant mixtures and legendary compounds like soma. This is primarily a reference work, but it's more entertaining and comprehensive than Ott's Pharmacotheon.
It's only major flaw is failing as an effective identification guide. All of the images are small, about 2" x 2" and relegated to the margins. While peppered with Ratsch's own photos which are unavailable elsewhere, there are few botanical illustrations other than some of the commonly seen historical woodcuts.
Ratsch chooses to give us a comprehensive view of the information available rather than leaning towards practical application. Plants like monkshood and Datura are mentioned as dangerous only in passing. Dosage guidelines in general are rather vague. Heimia salicifolia and puffball mushrooms are included based on their rumored effectiveness--along with research that contradicts it. He typically presents all the evidence and leaves it up to the reader to make their own educated decisions.
Ratsch does a superb job collating all the data currently available from various sources and adds to it his own research and insights. And unlike most other books on entheogens, he also covers stimulant and sedative plants and even some of the less psychoactive herbals. In spite of it's lack of illustrations, if you buy one reference on psychoactive plants this is the book you'll want.

The most comprehensive guide to the botany, history, distribution, and cultivation of all known psychoactive plants' Examines 414 psychoactive plants and related substances' Explores how using psychoactive plants in a culturally sanctioned context can produce important insights into the nature of reality' Contains797 color photographs and 645 black-and-white illustrationsIn the traditions of every culture, plants have been highly valued for their nourishing, healing, and transformative properties. The most powerful plants--those known to transport the human mind into other dimensions of consciousness--have traditionally been regarded as sacred. In The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants Christian Rätsch details the botany, history, distribution, cultivation, and preparation and dosage of more than 400 psychoactive plants. He discusses their ritual and medicinal usage, cultural artifacts made from these plants, and works of art that either represent or have been inspired by them. The author begins with 168 of the most well-known psychoactives--such as cannabis, datura, and papaver--then presents 133 lesser known substances as well as additional plants known as 'legal highs," plants known only from mythological contexts and literature, and plant products that include substances such as ayahuasca, incense, and soma. The text is lavishly illustrated with797 color photographs--many of which are from the author's extensive fieldwork around the world--showing the people, ceremonies, and art related to the ritual use of the world's sacred psychoactives.

Med School in a Box Review

Med School in a Box

I'm a huge fan of Mental Floss and most of its products. However, I was a little disappointed by Medical School in a Box. Yes, it's just supposed to be for fun, but it's not actually informative at all. It just has a few cards with random, boring facts on them. I'd go with the Mental Floss Genius Instruction Manual instead :-)

Biscuit Storybook Collection Review

Biscuit Storybook Collection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
How can children's book publisher HarperCollins improve Alyssa Satin Capucilli's Biscuit series? By offering 10 of Biscuit's most endearing stories in one book. That's exactly what they've done with the "Biscuit Storybook Collection."
Biscuit is a sweet-faced puppy you want to grab right out of the pages and cuddle. He and the little girl share the simple joys of childhood, like getting ready for bed and having a picnic. They share the excitement of adventures like being in a pet show and having a birthday party. They share the ability to take things that don't turn out quite right and make them wonderful.
The "Biscuit Storybook Collection" is the perfect book to introduce a child to the joys of reading.
The large typeface, simple words and repetition make the stories easy to read. The sweet plots and the delightful illustrations by Pat Schories make the stories a joy to read. The pictures are very gentle, with soft lines and colors, but are full of expression and activity. They are very effective at creating interest and encouraging the beginning reader to keep going to find out what happens next.
The stories included in the "Biscuit Storybook Collection" are:
Biscuit
Biscuit Wins a Prize
Biscuit's New Trick
Happy Birthday, Biscuit!
Biscuit's Picnic
Biscuit's Day at the Beach
Time to Paint Biscuit!
Biscuit Meets the Neighbors
Biscuit Goes to the Park
Biscuit and the Bunny
The "Biscuit Storybook Collection" is a must-have for your child's library. At my 3-year old's insistence, we have read stories from the "Biscuit Storybook Collection" every day since we got the book (2 months ago.) She doesn't show any signs of losing interest in the "Biscuit Storybook Collection" anytime soon, and I must add, neither do I. It's a very pleasant surprise to find a book that I not only don't mind reading over and over, I actually enjoy and look forward to reading over and over. The price is right, too. The "Biscuit Storybook Collection," complete with 10 different stories, doesn't cost any more than the price of a single book. I encourage you to buy this book today!

Foot Care Kit with Foot Cr?me Pumice Stone and Socks Review

Foot Care Kit with Foot Crme Pumice Stone and Socks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product has been my salvation because I love to go around barefoot most of the time and after living in Africa, bare feet feel natural and healthy.
The problem with running about barefoot or wearing open shoes is that your heels start to dry out. The pumice stone is perfect for use in the shower. The cream (more like a gel/oil) can be applied at night before you go to bed.
I'd wear the included socks if you are not going right to bed because if you walk on a linoleum or wood floor you could slip. By the next day your feet should have absorbed this healing cream. Not for use just before you put on shoes unless you
are wearing socks.
An amazingly rich product that is perfect for your feet or other dry skin conditions like dry patches on your hands and elbows.

SafeDrive Personal Alcohol Detector Review

SafeDrive Personal Alcohol Detector

It doesn't seem all that accurate. For example, on consecutive tests, one right after another (within seconds), the results can swing plus/minus 0.04 points. I wouldn't recommend relying on it for precise BAC readings.

7-day Plastic Pill Box (Asst Colors) Review

7-day Plastic Pill Box (Asst Colors)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If all you need is some compartments to put pills in and it's not a big deal if they are closed from the air or remain organized, this will work fine The individual "days" dont just come out of the overall organizer--they fall out. I had to use poster putty to keep mine in. The actual plastic is very flimsy and the doors on the compartments just barely stay closed. It's functional, but just by a margin. It's something that if I purchased at a dollar store (for a dollar) I'd be pleased with the purchase. Not worth $5 though, even with free shipping.

Therapearl Neck Wrap Review

Therapearl Neck Wrap
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A few nights ago I had a stiff neck and I pulled out my therapearl neck wrap and heated it up in the microwave for 20 seconds and layed down and relaxed in bed, the next day I took it to work with me and had it around my neck at my desk at work. I did this for the next two days and I know longer had a stiff neck. This product is great and I love that you can make it cold too but freezing it in the freezer or putting it in the fridge.
