"College Degree in 3" is an excellent college planning tool. The book's title champions the concept of how to plan to complete college in only three years. However, this is an excellent guide to successfully conquer college and the many new experiences that come with college, no matter what your timeline is. Dr. Bowman's conversational language style, diagrams, illustrations, and worksheets all make this an easy, fun, and useful read. The book provides concrete and insightful guidance on topics you were always wondering about and topics you never had considered. Just a few of the topics that the book addresses are: selecting a major, financial aid, living arrangements, note taking, test preparation, time management, and the social aspects of attending college. I strongly recommend for all high school students.

Walston's Guide to Christian Distance Learning: Earning Degrees Nontraditionally, 4th edition Review

Walston's Guide to Christian Distance Learning: Earning Degrees Nontraditionally, 4th edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this book on May 16, 2002. I did so because I needed help in sorting out facts from fiction. I had previously studied via distance through a ministry that purported to be a legitimate and scholarly institution. I received my Associates degree in Ministry after reading one book, and completing an open book exam (designed to ensure I read the book). Needless to say, as a person who has been called by the Lord to serve Him full time, it was obvious that this was not a true education.
To Rick Walston's book: I read this book, including the school reviews, at LEAST 5 times cover to cover. My copy has dog-earred and worn pages. It has had water on it. It has notes and markings inside it. It has taught me about accreditation and why it is and why it isn't important. I have been to every one of the school's web sites (most addresses are listed in the book, some you must find through google or another search engine) at LEAST 5 times.
At last, on July 1, 2002 I was accepted by the school I believe was THE BEST due to the faculty, the type of education (mentoring), the un-biased reccomendations, and the cost (compared to Traditional schools it was a bargain). I have seen first hand that I will gain an actual education (complete with extensive reading, very strict writing requirements, and routine contact with my mentor). I am starting at ground zero (ignoring my earlier mentioned "degree") and look forward to the journey. I would not have been able to make this prayerful decision with Rick Walston's book.
Even though I am already signed up with a school, I still look through this book at least every couple of weeks to review the information.
This book is a "MUST READ" before you invest the money the Lord has given you for your Biblical or Seminary training. We are required to be good stewards of the Lord's money. Spend the [money] (I had mine sent second day air so I could begin research quickly) to purchase this book, then read it and study it. Challenge the statements by visiting the web sites yourself. Call Rick Walston if you disagree with him. But don't spend $8,000 plus on distance education without this small investment first.

This provocative book tells you how to determine if a college is a credible school. It identifies hundreds of good schools through which students can earn Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees entirely off campus. It also exposes many less-than-wonderful schools that should be avoided. Walston's Guide has become the academic standard by which Christian distance learning is evaluated. It masterfully guides the reader through the important but often misunderstood concept of American accreditation. It also gives a trustworthy statement on how to understand global academic recognition. Walston's Guide is the must read for anyone interested in distance learning.

Graphs & Digraphs, Fourth Edition Review

Graphs and Digraphs, Fourth Edition
Average Reviews:

This was the one book assigned for a class where I did NOT have to go out and buy a few other books in order to round out the assigned text. Chartrand has written books on graph theory directed at students of many different levels, and this one is advanced -- but the keynote attribute of this book its thoroughness and accuracy. The proofs depend upon appropriate use of accurate definitions, and here the definitions are VERY clear and specific -- therefore in constructing the proofs in the exercises the student really comes to understand the meaning of the definitions and the concepts they describe. At first I thought this book was going to be unapproachable because it does not kill you with friendly banter, but I have come to appreciate its solid approach and trustworthiness not to lead anyone astray mathematically. By the way, graph theory is really fun. Don't pass us the chance to study it!

Accelerated Distance Learning: The New Way to Earn Your College Degree in the Twenty-First Century Review

Accelerated Distance Learning: The New Way to Earn Your College Degree in the Twenty-First Century

Voeller's techniques will be a godsend to those who want to obtain their degree on an accelerated schedule and save money in the process. Both practical and envisioning, the author's lively and readable text makes this an accessible guide for highschoolers in a hurry, as well as for the brainy grad-school crowd already using some of these techniques. The Internet is changing the face of higher education and no longer does a student have to settle for mediocre instruction when some of the world's best teachers now offer their courses online. Voeller also guides the student through the process of testing out (CLEP, Regents, etc.), mentored study, and portfolio assessment for academic knowledge learned on the job. His advice on how to find exactly the course you want (or craft your own) is excellent. Though Voeller covers some of the same ground as Dr. John Bear, his information on learning efficiency and retention is a welcome addition to this subject.

The MBA Reality Check: Make the School You Want, Want You Review

The MBA Reality Check: Make the School You Want, Want You
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book really worked for me for a lot of reasons. Least important but most interesting was the tone--these guys seem to really enjoy what they do and the book reads like they have a great time doing it. It helps to have a sense of humor when the subject matter is so heavy.
But when it really counts, helping me get into a top program, that's where this book is truly effective. It works because almost every chapter is centered around a real person (or more than one person) who has already gone through the process and has all the same questions and fears that I have right now. Evan Forster writes about his one-on-one experience helping these people like it's a little short story. I found it both engaging and entertaining, but most of all, useful and practical.

The book is in three parts:
I) "Upping your game" in advance of applying (you will find this useful even if you're not applying for another year or two, or frankly even if you're applying for a job).
II) The essays. This part has some of the funniest chapters. I loved how you can read the applicants' personal struggles with the essay topics, how they resolved them, and then finally get to read the actual essay they came up with afterward. That's the best part--seeing how their thinking about the topics turns into an actual essay. I especially loved the "Sadie the Sasquatch" story.
III) After you've submitted the app. This includes waitlist and re-app stuff (hope I don't have to deal with these chapters, so I just skimmed them). Loved the chapter on interview skills.

There are also workbooks in the back that help you organize your thoughts and think about your life/experiences in new ways. Guys, if you read this, make the workbooks available online in PDF format! The only other thing that's missing is information about specific schools or helping you pick the best school for you. They recommend you go online to find that information. (They also said something like, "If you can't figure out how to do the research on your own, then you have no business in a top school in the first place"--I totally agree!)
The bottom line is, I loved this book. I feel a lot calmer now that I've "seen" other people go through the same worries I'm having and ask the same questions. Highly recommended!
