(More customer reviews)I confess to being a professor at one of the schools mentioned in this book as the "Best". Business schools have developed a love/hate relationship with this book because although it contains a lot of good, thoughtful information, some people use it for the wrong reasons.
Make a distinction between the RANKINGS and the extended essay-type descriptions contained on the top scools. The RANKINGS tell you (possibly) two things: they tell you (maybe, sometimes) about the quality of the results the graduates get, and they tell you....well they tell you whether you will get bragging rights to your friends. In other words, the rankings have developed their own prestige which is SEPARATE from the issue of whether they have anything to do with quality.
So consider the rankings with caution...do you need the reassurance of a very high ranking....or do you really care about quality of program? This book actually tells you a great deal about the quality of the program, including everything from details about the curriculum, what they are looking for in admissions, which teachers are held in highest esteem, and general comments from recent students. THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE NUMBER. It's related to the number, but it's not the same thing.
Remember, however, not to stop with this book: the information given in any edition will start to get inaccurate before it hits the bookstore. I can think of 5 or 6 top schools with new deans within the past year or two. Perusing through the book I see a good number of "top faculty" that either have already gone on to another institution, or are non-tenured faculty on short-term contracts, who may be gone by the time you get there. Even the curricula change pretty quickly. Back up your reading of this book with school's web sites, visits, talks with alumns, etc.
After all, the question you really want the answer to is not "do grads of School W make more money and have better careers than graduates of School Y?", it's "Will I MYSELF have a better career at School W than School Y." Rather than worry about the ranking of the school you get into, find the school that works for YOU. Finally, I see other reviewers saying "this book got me into the BigBucks school." I think that reviewer's intelligence, personality, and experience got him in. If he hadn't gotten in to BigBucks, he would still be smart and hardworking, and the school that got him would have been lucky. And (for the record), the number at our school is just great!

The book's author Chioma helps one really identify and define one's 'brand' so that there is a consistent thread throughout one's application. The author helps you craft a great application from stories made up of choices you've made, extracurriculars you've taken a critical role in, relationships you build, to interesting situations you've experienced. She debunks myths and provides insight into the mysterious admissions office and what they are looking for (helping applicants identify strong personal stories of impact vs. stories that are unimpressive). Additionally, Chioma covers all aspects important to the process including resume, interviews, and recommenders which are crucial to supporting your candidacy.
I got into 3 out of 4 of the schools I applied to and will be attending HBS next year. Thus, I highly recommend the book!

First of all, the descriptions in this guide are more extensive and accurate than those found in other guides (with, perhaps, a few "niche" exceptions, such as guides focusing on a very small number of schools, i.e. top 10). Arguably, Business Week is "the guide" to use for accurate rankings. Their methodology relies upon ratings of the "consumers" of b-schools, students and recruiters. While no ranking methodology is perfect, I feel most comfortable with the one that includes opinon of the consumers of the particular "product."
Here's what you'll find between the covers:
The book starts with a fairly extensive section on why you would want an MBA and how to get into the best schools. If you don't know anything about the process of applying to b-school, this is a good start, but it is just that--a start. Rankings and the description of BW methodology (including questions asked and a list of schools with top and bottom scores on each question) complete the introductory section.
Most of the book, however, is focused on descriptions of programs that made top 30, the runners-up, and non-us schools. These descriptions include basic quantitative measures like fees, student body composition, and admissions numbers. I found the statistics on teaching methods employed by different schools particularly useful (and this is something important that most other guides/rankings pay very little attention to).
The actual descriptions are very extensive. They cover virtually all aspects of a program, including academics, clubs/activities, social life, placement, and alumni networks. The well written text is supplemented by quotes from faculty and students, which is a nice touch. At the end of each school's section, you'll find detailed information on placement, top recruiters, outstanding faculty, student testimonials, as well as some useful tips straight from the admissions office.
If you're looking to get a b-school guide that includes rankings, exhaustive descriptions, and some good advice, look no further. There might be other books out there that will provide more detailed program descriptions for a smaller number of programs, or books that will give more substantial advice about the application process, but there is no one book that does as many things as well as this one. Buy it!

The MBA Reality Check: Make the School You Want, Want You Review

(More customer reviews)This book really worked for me for a lot of reasons. Least important but most interesting was the tone--these guys seem to really enjoy what they do and the book reads like they have a great time doing it. It helps to have a sense of humor when the subject matter is so heavy.
But when it really counts, helping me get into a top program, that's where this book is truly effective. It works because almost every chapter is centered around a real person (or more than one person) who has already gone through the process and has all the same questions and fears that I have right now. Evan Forster writes about his one-on-one experience helping these people like it's a little short story. I found it both engaging and entertaining, but most of all, useful and practical.

The book is in three parts:
I) "Upping your game" in advance of applying (you will find this useful even if you're not applying for another year or two, or frankly even if you're applying for a job).
II) The essays. This part has some of the funniest chapters. I loved how you can read the applicants' personal struggles with the essay topics, how they resolved them, and then finally get to read the actual essay they came up with afterward. That's the best part--seeing how their thinking about the topics turns into an actual essay. I especially loved the "Sadie the Sasquatch" story.
III) After you've submitted the app. This includes waitlist and re-app stuff (hope I don't have to deal with these chapters, so I just skimmed them). Loved the chapter on interview skills.

There are also workbooks in the back that help you organize your thoughts and think about your life/experiences in new ways. Guys, if you read this, make the workbooks available online in PDF format! The only other thing that's missing is information about specific schools or helping you pick the best school for you. They recommend you go online to find that information. (They also said something like, "If you can't figure out how to do the research on your own, then you have no business in a top school in the first place"--I totally agree!)
The bottom line is, I loved this book. I feel a lot calmer now that I've "seen" other people go through the same worries I'm having and ask the same questions. Highly recommended!

What works:
1. Lots of advice, starting from the basics.
2. Tons of feedback from Admissions Committee Members
3. Essay samples
What doesnt:
1. Essay samples are limited to people who were leaders, consultants, etc etc. I dont believe these form the majority, Instead, I think the majority applicants are engineers, investment bankers and people from Asia. So the examples should have been chosen to fit that demographic too. I am more interested to see how an engineer represented himself well to get into a B-school, rather than read an essay of someone who was in the Army asa Lieutenant. It doesnt help much by publishing essays of people who're inherently different because of a very rare background.
2. Nothing much has really changed over the 2002 edition of the book. So, if you have the old one, I dont think this is worth buying. You could just use the library.
