Mathematics for Finance: An Introduction to Financial Engineering (Springer Undergraduate Mathematics Series) Review

Mathematics for Finance: An Introduction to Financial Engineering (Springer Undergraduate Mathematics Series)

This is a great book at a great price. As an undegraduate student reading for a degree in mathematics with financial management, I've found this textbook to be of great help in the derivative securities and portfolio theory modules I am doing this year. There is a nice balance between examples, theory, and exercises (all complete with solutions). The examples and excercises have been particularly helpful to me - they don't just illustrate and consolidate the various topics, but most importantly prepare the ground for the exciting new ideas to come. Compared to other books recommended for my mudules in mathematical finance, this is by far the most readable. What seems to be daunting mathematical theory full of unnesessary abstractions in the other books I have tried, this one has somehow managed to appear easy, indeedd almost obvious when you come to think of it (just look at pricing American options, for example!).
There are a few typos in various places and it is well worth visiting the book's web page at www.springeronline.com/1-85233-330-8 (and click on the accompanying website) for a list of corrections. At the same place, I have also located some nice Excel files that can be downloaed, with numerical solutions to case studies and excercises in the more advanced chapters - these are neatly designed and are of great help in following the text. I just wish there was even more material covered in similar Excel files.
In all respects, a great book this, and well worth spending under 20 quid.

This textbook contains the fundamentals for an undergraduate course in mathematical finance aimed primarily at students of mathematics. Assuming only a basic knowledge of probability and calculus, the material is presented in a mathematically rigorous and complete way. The book covers the time value of money, including the time structure of interest rates, bonds and stock valuation; derivative securities (futures, options), modelling in discrete time, pricing and hedging, and many other core topics. With numerous examples, problems and exercises, this book is ideally suited for independent study.

Financial Shock: A 360º Look at the Subprime Mortgage Implosion, and How to Avoid the Next Financial Crisis Review

Financial Shock: A 360º Look at the Subprime Mortgage Implosion, and How to Avoid the Next Financial Crisis
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In this age of full disclosure, I received this book free from the Amazon Vine program....with the condition that I publish a book review.
I may have purchased this book anyway. Back in the middle of 2007 when the sub-prime problem first surfaced......I remember a talking head on TV saying the sub-prime issue would not become a problem. His rationale was that sub-prime only represented a single digit percentage of the total mortgage market......and therefore it would have no major impact on financial markets......even if all sub-prime debt went bad. Boy was he wrong!! I have been curious how the sub-prime fiasco almost brought down the entire world financial markets.
Another disclaimer is that I have not personally been involved much with mortgage loans. My first mortgage was back in 1978. It was a 30 year fixed mortgage, and since I only put 10% down, it was mandatory to have mortgage insurance......until my equity reached 20%. I got additional 30 year fixed mortgages in 1980, 1994, and 1995 due to job location changes. In 1999, I got a variable rate loan on a new home.......put 50% down......and then converted to a 15 year fixed rate in early 2007. I also live in Illinois, not one of the national hotbed markets for sub-prime lending.
Zandi says there has been a financial markets panic about every 10 years. He predicts the next one will involve U.S. government debt with all our under-funded liabilities. Other authors have said there is a stock market crisis about every 25 years........because it takes this long for the "burned" generation to retire and be replaced with youngsters who have no memory of the last bubble.
Zandi explains the sequence of the sub-prime fiasco like this:
1.Fed lowered interest rates after 9/11 to stimulate the economy
2.Fed was not worried about creating inflation because the shift in manufacturing to China actually threatened deflation, not inflation
3.With returns on savings accounts being so low, plus the stock market going nowhere after the Tech stock bubble burst.......people chose to invest in their homes
4.Foreign countries could not get decent returns on fixed income investments due to low interest rates......so they chose to buy slightly higher yielding mortgage backed investments
5.Local banks changed from being prudent lenders holding mortgages to simply financial intermediaries driven by loan processing fees. Since they no longer held any mortgages, they didn't have to worry about making sure they were issuing loans that homeowners could really afford.
6.New companies jumped into the mortgage lending market ...with the same motives as the banks. The majority of borrowers did not even realize how risky their new loans were....especially if home prices declined.
7.Wall Street created exotic mortgage backed financial instruments and marketed their higher returns.
8.The Federal Reserve Chairman and all the regulators were asleep at the wheel.
9.Financial rating firms completely missed the boat on how risky these new financial instruments really were.
10.Eventually the music stopped.....there were no people left to keep bidding up the prices of homes. The house of cards came tumbling down.Zandi points out that sub-prime mortgages peaked at ½ of all mortgage originations.
A way was found to avoid the mortgage insurance if you put down less than 20%. You simply borrowed 80% on the first loan, then immediately took out a 2nd loan for the remaining 20%......apparently mortgage insurance is not required on either the 1st or 2nd loan.
Verification of income also went out the window.
Zandi points out that Americans lead the world in terms of how much housing cost we incur. Americans spend 33% of spending on their homes, while New Zealand spends 25%, France 20% and Japan 14%.
Zandi points out that at the peak of the boom in 2006, foreign investors owned 1/3 of all U.S. mortgages.
Zandi also points out that the price-to-rent ratio is a good bubble indicator.......analogous to the PE ratio in stocks. This ratio has been about 17 the last 25 years......but it peaked at 25 at the height of the boom. For this ratio to return to its 25 year average of 17, national U.S. house prices must drop 25%........and the hottest markets must drop 35%.
The author says the sub-prime bubble is 4 times as bad as the S&L fiasco ($1 Trillion versus $250B).
The author has some recommendations to avoid another sub-prime crisis including:
1.Lenders must verify income and assets
2.Lenders must verify borrowers are able to pay back the loan
3.Mandatory escrow for taxes and insurance
4.Start teaching personal finance in high school
I found the book easy to read and entertaining. However, I got very frustrated with the color coding of his charts. I could not distinguish what the variables were in most of his charts. Maybe he made them in color, and then the black-white conversion process made them illegible.
Given my background, I am shocked at how loose the lending process has become compared to 20 or 30 years ago. As the author points out, everyone in the lending food chain assumed "the other guy" had checked out the quality of the loan made...and in reality nobody checked it out.
After reading about the Tulip bulb and South Seas bubble......plus living through the 1989 S&L crisis, the 2000 Tech wreck, and the 2007 sub-prime fiasco.........this book has help give me a better idea of how to recognize the next financial bubble.
Some of the key indicators of bubbles include:
1."It's different this time"
2.TV shows and advertisements on speculating including store owners who sell stock instead of their normal goods (Tulip craze), ads showing taxi drivers who quit hauling passengers and day-trade (Tech Stocks), and TV shows dedicated to flipping houses
3.Historic valuation ratios are far exceeded (Tulip bulbs, PE ratios of 100 for Tech Stocks, Price-to-rent ratio for housing)All in all, I thought the author did a good job of exposing the role of each member in the housing loan food chain had in creating the sub-prime mess.
In this age of full disclosure, it can be noted that I am the author and publisher of the book INDEX MUTUAL FUNDS: HOW TO SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE AND BEAT THE PROS. This book is an introduction to the concept of index funds is and is sold on Amazon. I am also a contributing author to the book THE BOGLEHEADS GUIDE TO RETIREMENT PLANNING available from Amazon with an estimated release date of October 2009. I have also written 21 short stories on investing which are also available on Amazon.
If you are done speculating in the housing market, these books on conventional stock and bond investing may help you slowly grow more wealthy:

To Be a U.S. Secret Service Agent Review

To Be a U.S. Secret Service Agent
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a former applicant for the special agent position with the Secret Service, I can say that this book prepared me very well for my initial interview. I knew the history of the agency as well as the "lingo" such as POTUS, FLOTUS and SAC when I went in for the first step. The information on each stage of the applicant process is also spot on if you are interested in trying to become an agent. Holden is not kidding when he says that few people get the chance to become one. I made it to the panel interview and then got notice that I would not continue on in the process. I would add to this book that prior law enforcement and military experience, coupled with a degree in something such as criminal justice, are really what they are looking for. They claim that LE and military isn't required, but I was warned that those two experiences are the most valued. I had a law degree and a criminal justice degree and didn't get in (no prior law enforcement experience though). Overall, the information in this book is excellent if you want to get in the process of becoming either uniformed division or an agent. It is also just a fun read if you have ever wanted to know what it is like to be an agent or how they go about protecting the president. From talking with agents, and from doing countless hours of research online and from other books, I would say this book is very accurate with its information . I would also recommend the Joe Petro book called Standing Next to History if you want en even further look into the protection aspect of the agent position. I have read some reviews knocking the pictures in the Holden book, but I found them to be entertaining and just plain cool to look at (ex. the explosion pictures next to the limos).

The Secret Service was established after the Civil War by the Treasury Department, originally to protect American currency against counterfeiters. After the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901, Congress directed the Secret Service to protect the President of the United States. Protection remains the primary mission of the United States Secret Service. It takes a special type of individual to be a U.S. Secret Service agent, one willing to "take a bullet" to preserve the ideals on which the United States was founded. To Be a U.S. Secret Service Agent lifts the curtain for a look inside this secretive law enforcement agency, including the highly selective recruiting, the intense training, and the specialized weapons and equipment used to protect current and past Presidents, Vice Presidents, their families, and visiting heads of state.

150 Best Recession-Proof Jobs (Jist's Best Jobs) Review

150 Best Recession-Proof Jobs (Jist's Best Jobs)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this book out of the library to help my daughter decide on the best course of action. This book is laughable it is so wrong. The yearly job openings he lists for some fields are often not broken down but lumped together with a disclaimer, that if you don't read, may make you think that there are over 200,000 openings for foreign language teachers (guess it is all secondary education teachers, but then he got his information from some "source"). He lists job openings for librarians and social workers as being almost the same, but job growth is around 18% for social workers and around 4% for librarians. His projection on pay is also off for many jobs. Obviously he sits in an office gathering data from his sources instead of going out into the real world. Don't base any career decision on this book, please!!!

The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business Review

The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Business
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having graduated from a top business school in Canada, I can safety say that I could have thrown out all my textbooks and used the money I spent on tuition to actually START a business, and used this book as a replacement to my business education.
What makes this book warrant such a strong statement is the fact that it's a comprehensive synthesis of all of the concepts you need to know to understand business inside and out. There are no complex models to learn or outdated theories to memorize just to get marks or pass tests. What you get is a comprehensive set of "mental models" or heuristics on all of the sub parts of creating, operating and working within a business. Why is this important? Because a mental model is like a rule of thumb for any possible scenario you might encounter in running a business - from value creation to delivery to marketing to finance. It helps you look at the world through the lens of what's most important (and thus no fluff to distract you) which ultimately helps you to ask the right questions and ultimately helps guide you to make the right decisions about maneuvering in business. These principles are universal and applicable for small business start ups to Fortune 50 CEOs because they're based on business fundamentals (the mental models) and not just tactics found in most other books.
In addition to a sound business knowledge what this book has is a very extensive section on working with yourself and with others. Achieving great strides in business is sometimes less about knowing the business aspect but more about conquering yourself - either with productivity, with working with people or with overcoming doubts and fears - all things I'm finding out as I work on my own venture. After having read dozens of psychology and self help books I can also say without a doubt that the section on working with yourself trumps them all. Josh delivers a well researched practical guide to understanding how you brain works and how to work with it rather than against it, so you can actually go ahead and apply the concepts in the rest of the book.
Highly recommended if you wish to know more about business, are thinking of starting your own business, or are thinking about joining an MBA program to climb the corporate ladder. Buying this book could end up saving a mortgage worth of student debt, so what have you really got to lose?

The Portable MBA (Portable MBA Series) Review

The Portable MBA (Portable MBA Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The rage nowadays seems to be how you can circumvent the B school process, save 100,000 dollars, and still come out on top with all the knowledge free.
I got news for you.
It won't happen.
But there are activities and materials you can procure in order to sharpen your business acumen and critical reasoning skills.
This post comes as a result from a recent seminar I attended where deans from top MBA programs in NYC were convened to talk about the admissions process.
There were 5 up there - 3 of them agreed that if it weren't for the networking opportunities at B school, everything you get a B school can be attained by suscribing to the Economist.
I was shocked.
So here we go.
The top five ways to get your portable MBA:
1. Buy the complete Portable MBA Series. There are many more, but you only need these 8:
- the portable MBA (start with this one)
-" " finance/accounting.
-" " entrepreneurship
-" " marketing
- " " management
- " " strategy
- " " investments
- " " economics
You probably think I'm joking.
I'm not.
The wealth of information here will blow you away.
Be a smart and consider it all as an investment.
Anyways, top b schools cover all the topics listed above.
2. Suscribe to the Economist.
I suscribe to dozens of business periodicals, but the Economist is global in scope.
Remember that word - global.
You'll hear it a lot in Business school should you decide to go.
3. Read Thomas Friedman's new book: THE WORLD IS FLAT. I read over 300 business books a year (on average one a week) and this is so far the best book I've read in 2005.
Get this: Business Week polled some of the top B school professors in the nation and they all said they were planning on reading this over the summer.
I'll let you decide.
4. Be thankful you have the internet at your disposal.
Our parents did not have such a luxury as Google, Investopedia, or Wikipedia.
Read everthing related to business, finance, econ, marketing, technology, media, wall street, stock markets, venture capitalism, & the internet.
That means blogs, too...
5. Get cable and watch either CNNfn, CNBC, or Bloomberg as much as you can.
Even if you're busy, leave it on and let that juice seep into the subconscious.
Use discipline + never change the channel to watch what the rest of America watches.
So there you go.

This book covers a lot of ground and is easy to follow (sometimes too easy). A lot of the contents can be redundant for those with a background in marketing, finance, etc. but it is well rounded. I compared it to the Dummies equivalent and found this one to be a better read (I usually buy Dummies though - this is my first Idiots guide).

What the Best MBAs Know: How to Apply the Greatest Ideas Taught in the Best Business Schools
Average Reviews:

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a business school refresher b/c it thoroughly covers the all the topics. You'll find yourself saying "oh, yes, I remember that!"
The approach throughout the book is to highlight "the big questions" around each topic, then discuss them in detail. I've found this a great way to hit the just high points when I want to refresh myself and to have a more in-depth read when I want more.
It has become a great desk reference for me. A co-worker just finishing an MBA has also read it and found it a great complement to his MBA program.
While all the chapters are well-written and full of information, the chapter on macroeconomics was outstanding. I was surprised to learn in the book how few of the top business schools teach macroeconomics. Fortunately, the book covers it well.
Great book.

Have contemplated the idea of doing an MBA for a while, so came across this and thought it may give me a good basic idea of what will be covered. While the book covers a lot of ground, I found it way too basic. I mean, if you are at the point where you are considering an MBA, a reasonable base level of management understanding (either from undergrad or practical experience) can be somewhat assumed. This reads more like 'beginning business for dummies' or some such - well below 'mastering' business for the sort of person who may be considering MBA courses. Anyhow, it was well written, covered a lot of areas of business at a surface level, but certainly didn't provide me with a lot of new depth on any business areas.

You Have A College Degree, Now What? Review

You Have A College Degree, Now What
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Too often, books and seminars feed off the high that people get from thinking they can conquer the world overnight simply because someone tells them that it's possible. "You Have a College Degree, Now What?" will not deliver this kind of high because it stays within reality and addresses real issues with realistic solutions. It doesn't claim to make you a millionaire overnight, but rather hammers home the need to face reality head-on and make something happen with the education that was earned after years of hard work and persistence. I hope more college graduates get wind of this book before settling for anything short of their full potential.

I thought this book was a good read, but most people are going to miss the point that the author's outcome (ie, having a net worth of $1 million) was mostly due to luck. Just look at his breakdown of what his assets were at the end of the book. His multifamily house essentially doubled in value in the space of a couple of years, and accounted for a large chunk of the $1 mil.
To borrow one of Taleb's (Fooled by Randomness) phrases, you have to look at "alternate histories" here. Not what just happened to occur, but think of what COULD HAVE occured if the author used the exact same techniques, but in different environments that he would have no control over. The author happend to be the right age and live in the perfect time and place to benefit from an unprecendented real estate market. What if he instead was born five years later (or at any other time for that matter) and did the exact same things? If he did the exact same things NOW, he could easily have wound up with negative equity in his property, if he could finance it in the first place. His outcome discussed in this book would probably be in the top 1% of possibilities. He even addresses the fact that he benefitted from luck, but totally undervalues that impact of course.
Don't get me wrong, his money saving techniques are all valid, but that is no where near the reason for his net worth getting to $1 mil that quickly. Eating ramen is more for show, to try and make a statement to your friends. In the end, doing those type of things will certainly help, but it's still a drop in the bucket when compared to luck beyond one's control.
In the book, Corey makes the point that you have to spread out your assets so that you can be in the position to get lucky with one of them. I agree with that completely. But you still have to GET lucky!
While I think most readers could learn something from the author, it would be wildly inaccurate for the author to claim this is an instruction manual on how to get to $1 million. You can't just say "buy real estate in a perfect environment, and it's value will increase by 50% per year." Not to mention the fact that he got his last $100k or so from the advance on this BOOK DEAL! Haha. If the book was titled, "A Sure Fire Way to $100k by 30" that would be much more reasonable and would factor out randomness.
