(More customer reviews)I have been teaching Career Counseling for years and finally decided to try the Zunker text. What a mistake. Yes, it is comprehensive. But it is written like a bad lit review. Endless citations of research with little synthesis. It is hard for students to see the big picture! I will stick with the Niles/Harris-Bowlsbey text (Career Development Interventions in the 21st Century) for my Career Counseling course, and the Sharf text (Applying Career Development Theory to Counseling) for more advanced courses in Vocational Theory.

(More customer reviews)I have been a career counselor for almost fifteen years now, and my shelves are filled with everything from "What Color is Your Parachute?" to "Do What You Are" to "I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was". Until recently, I felt that most every career exploration book was retreading the same ground, connecting your skills, values, and interests in a linear way to matching job titles. Or, at the other extreme, telling you to just think happy metaphysical thoughts to change the universe and manifest prosperity.
Then I read "You Majored in What?" - and I was blown away by a radically new approach to career exploration, based on Chaos Theory and what the author calls "Wise Wandering". It takes into account the fact that nobody follows a linear path to a lifelong career that fits perfectly. Instead, it leverages the seemingly random events in your life to provide clues to your attractors.
Thank you, Dr. Brooks, for giving me a new set of tools to use with my clients. It's opened me up to new approaches, and reminded me that, as Tolkien said, "Not all those who wander are lost."

(More customer reviews)I got this book out of the library to help my daughter decide on the best course of action. This book is laughable it is so wrong. The yearly job openings he lists for some fields are often not broken down but lumped together with a disclaimer, that if you don't read, may make you think that there are over 200,000 openings for foreign language teachers (guess it is all secondary education teachers, but then he got his information from some "source"). He lists job openings for librarians and social workers as being almost the same, but job growth is around 18% for social workers and around 4% for librarians. His projection on pay is also off for many jobs. Obviously he sits in an office gathering data from his sources instead of going out into the real world. Don't base any career decision on this book, please!!!
