(More customer reviews)Dr. Franklin is one of the greatest historians this country has ever produced. He holds degrees from Fisk and Harvard (two post graduate degrees from Cambridge). He has more honorary degrees than Carter has little pills (or I guess now, peanuts). This work, now in its eighth printing, is perhaps the greatest single reference work exploring the African American experience and the contributions of this race to American history, and has been so since the first edition was printed in 1947.
He starts by revealing more knowledge that most people ever fathomed about the African experience in the pre-slavery centuries, with the greatness that was the African continent in Ghana, Songhay and the rest of Africa. The exploration of the "peculiar institution" of slavery, reconstruction and the post Civil War hope is complete and brilliantly done. The chapters on the Harlem Renaissance and the first half of the twentieth century alone is worth the price of the book.
Extraordinarily well researched. It is scholarly but never dry. It is objective, but never loses the passion for the subject. A must for any complete understanding of our history.

I've read my Weick, my Mumby, my Deetz, my Jablin, my Putnam & my Poole. While I would never suggest that anyone ever forgo reading primary sources, who can argue that sometimes we just lack the time to read everything we would like to? That is where this book comes in.
This Eisenberg & Goodall book is not just an average review of the major concepts, themes and theories in organizational communication. It covers the concepts of org comm in more detail than most texts do. The authors also are very aware of the changes and challenges to organizations in the contemporary world, and included excellent chapters on globalization, outsourcing, etc.
Finally, Eisenberg & Goodall wrote this text interactively. It is the most dialogical of all the org comm texts I've read. This stimulates not just the memorization of fact, but deep-rooted thinking and contemplation.
If you do not know where to start when you look at the expansive landscape of organizational communication, this is THE place to start. After a thorough reflective reading of Eisenberg and Goodall, you will definately have a firm foundation to read the primary sources you want.

(More customer reviews)This is the textbook that every Purchasing professional must have on the shelf. It is written by the gurus in the field that helped to define the profession and set standards by developing the professional certification requirements.
The book establishes common language to describe Purchasing core processes that are applicable across industry and organizational lines. Because of the common language it establishes it can be really helpfull for someone who has been in a single industry or organization for some time that wants to transition to another industry but only knows the terms from their previos field.
For example someone involved in government procurement wishing to transition to the private sector might find the book usefull. Furthermore, it is written in the same language as appears on the NAPM APP and CPM examinations.
I have used the book both in a Purchasing Masters Degree Program at St Marys College in California and also in a Purchasing Certificate Program offered by the University of Phoenix and the material and cases are always well received by the students. The cases in particular are good and provide a common ground for people who have used the book.
There are some other books out there and new gurus are emerging but for now this is still the best.

Endless citations of research with little synthesis. It is hard for students to see the big picture! I will stick with the Niles/Harris-Bowlsbey text (Career Development Interventions in the 21st Century) for my Career Counseling course, and the Sharf text (Applying Career Development Theory to Counseling) for more advanced courses in Vocational Theory.

Mechanical Vibrations (5th Edition) Review

(More customer reviews)I recently used this as a text to teach Vibrations to Mechanical Engineering seniors after Vibration Analysis by Vierck went out of print. I was attracted to Rao's book because much of the presentation is similar to Vierck. After using this text for one semester, I was not satisfied. I was particularly concerned by Chapter 2 where the fundamentals of damped single degree of freedom systems are covered. This Chapter is critical to building the foundation of Vibration Theory and I was disturbed to find that two critical plots, the time history comparison of responses with various damping levels and the phase plane plot for the same cases were seriously incorrect. While errors always can be found in texts, these plots were so obviously wrong at first glance that I wondered how a book with 29 reviewers (as listed in the Acknowledgements) has such glaring errors. As I progressed through the text I found a number of other errors including incorrect equations in some places. I also found that some material, emphasized in Vierck, that I consider important was buried in the worked examples rather than being emphasized as part of the book's text. While the book does present a lot of material and gives some interesting problems, I found that I was not comfortable with the text at the end of the course. I have since decided to drop this book from consideration as our text.

(More customer reviews)I have recently completed a BSc (HONS) in horticulture and found this book very useful. I used many text during my degree, however this was the one I refered to most. I think that students particularily in the initial stages of a degree or diploma course would find the book most valuable. Many areas of interest are covered e.g. biological control of plant pathogens, irrigation and many other areas that may not be apparent from the books title. There are many good pictures and diagrams and each chapter has useful references. This book will also be of interest to horticultural professionals.
