You Majored in What?: Mapping Your Path From Chaos to Career Review

You Majored in What: Mapping Your Path From Chaos to Career
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a career counselor for almost fifteen years now, and my shelves are filled with everything from "What Color is Your Parachute?" to "Do What You Are" to "I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was". Until recently, I felt that most every career exploration book was retreading the same ground, connecting your skills, values, and interests in a linear way to matching job titles. Or, at the other extreme, telling you to just think happy metaphysical thoughts to change the universe and manifest prosperity.
Then I read "You Majored in What?" - and I was blown away by a radically new approach to career exploration, based on Chaos Theory and what the author calls "Wise Wandering". It takes into account the fact that nobody follows a linear path to a lifelong career that fits perfectly. Instead, it leverages the seemingly random events in your life to provide clues to your attractors.
Thank you, Dr. Brooks, for giving me a new set of tools to use with my clients. It's opened me up to new approaches, and reminded me that, as Tolkien said, "Not all those who wander are lost."

As a recent graduate with a math degree this is the book I have been searching for. This is the only book you should need. It covers the interview, cover letters, resumes, networking and everything else. All other books on this subject limit discussion to education majors and jobs. This book does the same but gives equal treatment to those who seek jobs with math as a primary skill. It has hints for everything you could imagine. Gives lists of job titles and many job discriptions. Also gives some contact information for organizations that will be of help or interest to anyone looking for employment using their math degree. Once again, this is a must buy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Jobs for English Majors Review

Great Jobs for English Majors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even though this book is inexpensive, I wouldn't recommend purchasing it. The job ideas are not inspiring, and not really up to date either. It barely skims the surface of what someone can do with an English major and/or writing experience, and never steps outside of the basic areas that you've probably already thought of yourself. It also doesn't give you a single idea as to how to break into any of the few jobs it mentions, if you happen to be looking for that kind of advice as well. Purchase something a little weightier and a little more expensive, it'll be worth it. This isn't.

This book has information and resources that would be useful for any English major because it covers many of the jobs out there for people who love English. I did not know an English major could get so many different kinds of jobs. It covers teaching, techinical writing, business... It also gives you questions to evaluate yourself to figure out what kind of job you want. It was worth reading.

I'm an English Major Now What? Review

I'm an English Major Now What
Average Reviews:

I must say that I liked the concept of the book but I was really disappointed with the actual product. I think the format of the book was not very helpful and it didn't really feel as if he was guiding me. Also he spent the majority of the book talking about book, magazine, and newspaper professions and not enough time on the other careers listed in the book. He did focus on corporate jobs for English majors but somehow it felt disjointed to me. He briefly mentioned other careers like Public Relations and so forth but only briefly.

What do Joan Rivers, Steven Spielberg, Alan Alda, Barbara Walters, Clarence Thomas and Chris Isaak have in common? That's right - they were English majors who now have dream jobs. "I'm an English Major - Now What?" debunks the myth that English grads have to be teachers, editors or writers and provides: information on exciting career paths, including corporate communications, investment banking, graphic design, customer training, and more; strategies for showcasing skills taught in college to prospective employers; and information on how an English background can be very marketable. All this advice is given in the author's candid and humorous voice. English majors are unconventional, so why offer them a standard career guide? Instead give them this invaluable resource for landing a job they will love.
