Great Jobs for Business Majors Review

Great Jobs for Business Majors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book lays out 5 career paths that a business major can choose. While it has a beginning section on resumes, networking, and other things necessary to get the job, that information can be found elsewhere. Therefore I recommend this book only for business majors, not really for anyone further along exploring a broad range of options.

150 Best Low-Stress Jobs (Jist's Best Jobs) Review

150 Best Low-Stress Jobs (Jist's Best Jobs)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is almost like the author cut & paste his other book "Best Jobs for Introverts" and put the jobs in a different order.
Again, mostly blue-collar jobs like plumber, steelworker, repairman, baker etc. The type of stuff you don't stress over when you go home at night, but you may stress over the low pay.
Some administrative jobs like mail clerk, file clerk. Massage therapist. The top jobs are (like the other book), computer engineering type stuff. I think the only science job was zoologist, which is so rare nowadays.
I certainly didn't learn anything useful.

How to Get Any Job with Any Major: A New Look at Career Launch (How to Get Any Job: Career Launch & Re-Launch for) Review

How to Get Any Job with Any Major: A New Look at Career Launch (How to Get Any Job: Career Launch and Re-Launch for)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book based on the title since my children have liberal arts majors. After reading it I bought copies for both my children (so I could keep my copy!) and have highly recommended it to my friends.
Mr Asher has many years experience counseling college students on career choice and career launch. "Most college students want a job when what they should really want is career development. What is career development? Career development is conducting a process of self-discovery and then matching what is discovered with the career marketplace." p 3 The book describes the process of selecting careers to research, how to research them, and then how to look for opportunities in those areaa.
What I particularly liked is that Mr Asher gives very detailed instructions on what to do, how to do it, and why to do it. For example, here is how to develop a list of companies to call, here is how to make contact and get interviews, and here is the number of interviews you need per week to get "traction" and land a job within 6 months.
While this book is specifically aimed at college grads it would be very useful for anyone looking for a new job.
I also highly recommend "The Play of Your Life: Your Program for Finding the Career of Your Dreams - And a Step-by-step Guide to Making It a Reality" by Colleen Sabatino. It is geared toward workers with experience who want to change jobs but the assessments are very useful for first-time job hunters. It has more specific advice on resumes and cover letters.
Another book I highly recommend is "They Don't Teach Corporate in College: A Twenty-Something's Guide to the Business World" by Alexandra Levit. The business world functions very differently from college and that can be a tough transition for students. Written by a 28-year-old who figured it out successfully, it's a great introduction for students entering the work world.

Philosophy majors and GPA-challenged students, rejoice! According to career guru Donald Asher, what you major in or how well you do in college are not indicators of future career success. In HOW TO GET ANY JOB WITH ANY MAJOR, Asher debunks the myth that only brainy students with specialized majors find high-paying, visible careers after college. The truth is that plenty of average folks with general, liberal arts majors have gone on to find lucrative and fulfilling careers-and anyone can do it by following Asher'¬?s advice. If you'¬?re just graduating, you'¬?ll learn to promote the skills you already have, recognize how employers hire and what skills they value most, and get influential people to help you. Or, if you'¬?re already in the work world, you'¬?ll learn to use internships, credential programs, post-baccalaureates, and grad school to jump-start a stalled career. Offering innovative ideas to help launch the perfect career, HOW TO GET ANY JOB WITH ANY MAJOR is the new job-hunter'¬?s handbook to success.

This is a fairly decent book which covers a lot of possiblities for people with a degree in foreign languages. However, the sad truth is that there are not all that many career opportunities for linguists who have not developed a strong (preferrably scientific or technical) second skill. American companies tend to take their linguists for granted, but hopefully this situation will change as more linguists make their way into possitions of authority. For what careers ARE out there this book is fabulous.

Happy About My Resume: 50 Tips for Building a Better Document to Secure a Brighter Future
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very informative guide to developing a better resume. A few years ago I had a resume professionally prepared at no small expense. It was very well prepared but was dated and I wanted to update it. Rather than pay someone to do the work, I elected to do it myself. I bought this book and followed many of the suggestions the author recommended. The completed resume was shorter in length but offered more pertinent information on my abilities than my old professionally prepared resume. When I sent it to my executive search firm for review and use, they responded with the comment that it was one of the best executive resume's they have ever recieved.

Many great job candidates have poor resumes that are merely a laundry list of job tasks that do little to distinguish them from their competition. The average recruiter or hiring manager spends less than 15 seconds reviewing a resume. Most people's resumes fail to "wow" the reader and quickly end up in the "no" pile.
Writing a resume can feel like an overwhelming task. It can seem like a Herculean effort to consolidate so much important information about a career into a one or two page document. But it doesn't have to be that way! In 'Happy About My Resume', Barbara Safani offers 50 tips for creating compelling copy and presenting it in a powerful way to grab the hiring authority's attention and get them to pick up the phone to call you in for an interview. Safani provides practical and easy-to-follow advice as well as numerous samples that show each of her tips in action.
The book will help readers learn how to quickly create a resume that is professional, gets them noticed, minimizes the amount of time they spend in a job search, and maximizes their earning power. The book is for anyone who wants to proactively manage their career and improve the quality of their current resume or create a resume from scratch.

Great Jobs for Environmental Studies Majors (Great Jobs Series) Review

Great Jobs for Environmental Studies Majors (Great Jobs Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What's this about the first 3 reviews being advertisements for "EnvironmentalCrossing dot com." Oh well.
This book is two thirds job opportunities, and one third how to represent and present yourself for getting a job. That last third is fairly good advice for anyone, whether you are interested in an environmental career or not.
The authors focus on five general environmental job tracks:
- environmental education
- environmental policy, planning, and management
- environmental technology
- environmental sciences
- environmental engineering
As I mentioned in the title of this review, throw out environmental engineering if you have an environmental studies degree. Environmental engineering, like civil engineering, is a demanding 4-5 year program of study. It ain't gonna happen.
The environmental sciences and technology tracks might be useful, but then your degree should be focusing on environmental science, and not environmental studies.
I sense a lot of students being interested in environmental education, but the book talks a lot about middle and high school positions. A teaching certification or degree is important here. I'd add environment-related communication careers (writing, public relations, journalism) here as well.
That brings us to environmental policy, planning, and management. This twenty page section could have been greatly expanded, because I see a lot of opportunity here for environmental studies majors. There are career opportunities in both government and non-governmental organizations here, as well as a track for environmental studies majors to get a graduate degree in law, public administration, or even business administration.
Best hint for applying for job? More and more employers are asking you to post your resume on-line. Don't be fancy. If it looks scrambled when the prospective employer opens it up, your chances are scrambled as well (p. 28).
You might also want to take a look at The Complete Guide to Environmental Careers in the 21st Century.

Smart Moves is a fantastic resource, which I recommend to all my students, especially to the ones who approach me bewildered and anxious about internship, job, career, life mission issues. In today's economy this is the book we have been waiting on! It is straight forward and loaded with current and relevant information. As I read the book and looked back over my career, I realize that Mr. Happe is right on with his points regarding major business men and women successes that didn't have a college degree.
While the discussion regarding "degree or no degree" makes for a interesting debate, this book equips people now that have been dumped by our economy back into the work place, on their efforts to transition their careers. This book should be one that everyone looking at the economy and career change should buy simply as a current guideline for their next move.

It wasn't the right place for Richard Branson, Henry Ford, or Ray Crock (the founder of McDonalds), together with 572 people listed in Launching Points who changed the world with no college degree. I purchased this book as a graduation gift because the title really caught my attention and the fact that the author is a marketing professional that has worked on major accounts AND is a professor in a university made me feel that I have stumbled across the perfect gift. I know that recent college grads have the unfortunate task of overcoming the struggle to find their first job after college in a difficult job market. I think this book will help focus the graduate on what is essential to landing a job--and not repeating the typical advice that is often found in other job search books. I especially liked the chapter with the sample interview questions and answers. Chapter 3 is packed with useful info! That chapter alone was worth purchasing this book.

The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook: More Than 300 Things You Can Do With a Law Degree, Updated and Revised
Average Reviews:

This book, like the one by Deborrah Aaron, is at first promising, but ends up as mere fluff. One such author spoke at my law school. Her advice was a joke and a waste of my time and money. These authors are all making money doing what? Selling these books and helping the rest of us "find our passion" in life. The law books are no different than any "resume builder book" you can find for 1/10 of the price. SAVE YOUR MONEY!!! These law books all have one thing in common -- they take you through endless ridiculous skills assessments and other "exercises" designed to "identify your passions," "explore your skills," and have you making stupid charts listing all your best and worst qualities, etc., etc. What every lawyer who wants out of the legal profession wants to know is this: What are the viable jobs where having legal experience or a law degree are going to put me above the rest of the applicants? How do I find those jobs? What are the obstacles I am going to face in trying to get my name in front of the key hiring person? What are the ups and downs of each career? And most importantly, how do I go about getting my foot in the right door? I realize knowing your skills is important, but I can do that with a standard resume builder book for much less time and money.
