Mechanical Vibrations (5th Edition) Review

Mechanical Vibrations (5th Edition)

I recently used this as a text to teach Vibrations to Mechanical Engineering seniors after Vibration Analysis by Vierck went out of print. I was attracted to Rao's book because much of the presentation is similar to Vierck. After using this text for one semester, I was not satisfied. I was particularly concerned by Chapter 2 where the fundamentals of damped single degree of freedom systems are covered. This Chapter is critical to building the foundation of Vibration Theory and I was disturbed to find that two critical plots, the time history comparison of responses with various damping levels and the phase plane plot for the same cases were seriously incorrect. While errors always can be found in texts, these plots were so obviously wrong at first glance that I wondered how a book with 29 reviewers (as listed in the Acknowledgements) has such glaring errors. As I progressed through the text I found a number of other errors including incorrect equations in some places. I also found that some material, emphasized in Vierck, that I consider important was buried in the worked examples rather than being emphasized as part of the book's text. While the book does present a lot of material and gives some interesting problems, I found that I was not comfortable with the text at the end of the course. I have since decided to drop this book from consideration as our text.

Cura Heat Therapeutic HeatPacks for Back, Shoulder, and Neck Pain 3 ea Review

Cura Heat Therapeutic HeatPacks for Back, Shoulder, and Neck Pain 3 ea

From someone who has actually tried out this product, it works great. It really does last at least 12 hours, is warm enough, and it is nice and thin. For anyone who doesn't want to wear it over their clothing it can be worn stuck onto the inside of your clothes, but it is most comfortable if you wear a tighter layer of clothing and attach it to to that then put another layer over it.

ChillowPlus Comfort Device 1 ea Review

I was really excited to get one of these, as I've been suffering through the never ending menopause. The Chillow works, in that, it has a nice, cool surface. It very much cools me down when I first lie down on it. However, these are the negatives.
-It's bulky and heavy and very hard to get situated. It's so heavy, in fact, that it squishes my pillows down too flat.
- If you put it inside a pillow case (atop a pillow) it won't stay in place. If you use it outside the pillow, well, you're lying on plastic -- which just made me sweat.
- it got very very warm during the night. Not just "no longer cool", but nearly what I'd call HOT.I awoke with the sensation of lying on a heating pad.
-the pad bunches up inside the plastic case. I've only had it 1 1/2 weeks.
-the smell has faded some, but there is still a strong plastic smell. Heck, I smell like plastic after I wake up!!
So really, I found it useful to help get to sleep, but when I woke up during the night, (sometimes after only 2 hours) I was lying on a hot, wrinkly, heavy lump of soggy plastic. I'll take the hot flashes, thanks anyway.

Carex Bed Buddy Hot/Cold Pack Review

Carex Bed Buddy Hot/Cold Pack

I don't know if things could go better any than this. A lot of times you order a product and try it- just to be disappointed. Not the case here. It is what it says and it does what it says- no if, ands, or butts.
The bed buddy comes wrapped up, and once you unfold it, its ready for use- no assembly required. My son grabbed it and immediately popped it in the microwave for one and a half minutes, slung it around his neck, and I've had trouble getting it back since!
As you can see, its really quick and easy to use. Unlike some hot packs, this one gets hot, and stays that way. I haven't timed it yet, but its a good payout for the short 1.5 minutes you stick it in the microwave.
And its soft too- so you can totally take it to bed with you without worrying about it scratching you or becoming uncomfortable. Perhaps its best feature is the two rings on either end- they're sturdy and can take some pullin'. These two rings make it VERY easy to place the pack where you want it. So if you have shoulder issues, you'll have no trouble slinging this thing around your neck. mid-back, low back, or where ever you need some heat.
Yes, I really like this product and will use it for a long time to come. After a day at the office, my neck can get sore and stressed out, and this little pack is just what I need- and I can use it within several minutes of walking in the door! Great for my low back too.
