101 Career Alternatives for Teachers: Exciting Job Opportunities for Teachers Outside the Teaching Profession Review

101 Career Alternatives for Teachers: Exciting Job Opportunities for Teachers Outside the Teaching Profession

I was hoping to get practical information on viable alternatives. Unfortunately, there were many included where job growth was expected to be slow. In addition, there were many jobs that required further schooling although the author DID NOT clearly indicate which ones.
I wanted a book to tell me about viable alternatives for teachers which would not require me to go back to school. I was a bit disappointed and will continue looking.

101 Things I Learned in Architecture School Review

101 Things I Learned in Architecture School
Average Reviews:

I don't remember ever having a textbook for design studio - undoubtedly because this book hadn't been published yet. If it had, I would have had a wonderful little book that breaks down five years worth of architectural wisdom into 101 pages. I recommend reading it (about a ten minute read) before and a couple of times during the design process to refocus yourself. If nothing else, it should be required reading for first year students because it will teach you to speak architect. 'Parti' 'Figure/Ground' 'Positive Space' 'Negative Space' and all the other jargon architects tend to use are all defined here.
The book contains advice on both the technical and the intellectual. Hints for everything from lettering to post modern theory share page space with reminders as varied as 'design in section' to 'if you can't explain your design in terms your grandmother understands, you don't understand your own design.'
Nearly everything in the book is a hit. Even the cover is made from chip board. If you're a poor architecture student, scrape together some coffee money and get a copy. If you're already an architect, get a copy and remember a time before design problems were strip malls and warehouses.

Writing to Persuade: Minilessons to Help Students Plan, Draft, and Revise, Grades 3-8 Review

Writing to Persuade: Minilessons to Help Students Plan, Draft, and Revise, Grades 3-8

First off, I must say that I am not a big fan of "canned curriculum" but I decided to try a workshop approach to persuasive writing this year since I am doing Writer's Workshop in my 3rd grade class. I have always used more of a guided writing format for persuasive writing in the past, since it is so difficult to teach. I work at a small school and am the only third grade teacher and I felt like I needed some guidance in tackling persuasive writing in Writers Workshop. This books lesson-by-lesson support gave me the courage to face persuasive writing in a more organic form. There is a lesson map at the beginning of the book which tells you which lessons to do for what grade level. Obviously, all lessons are appropriate for third grade. It pretty much gives you verbatim minilessons to introduce each phase of the writing with your class (which is nice for the first time through). The author also offers support on how to handle issue that may (and will) come up throughout the process. I would definitely recommend this book to any teacher wanting to use the Workshop approach to teach Persuasive Writing. The second grade teacher at my school even adapted it for his class.

I love this book for all it teaches us about persuasive writing and for how it strengthens our understanding of this expansive genre…. Having read it, I am wiser about teaching -and writing - persuasion. You will be, too.

Becoming an Architect: A Guide to Careers in Design Review

Becoming an Architect: A Guide to Careers in Design
Average Reviews:

The book is really nothing but a bunch of interview questions and the answers architects give to them, which isn't a bad thing. There are several pictures of architectural structures, several drawings, and some diagrams of buildings as well. Instead of reading a concise summary of the authors research you instead get the raw data (for the most part) and draw your own conclusions from it.
I kept seeing a few similar traits over and over in the architects the author interviewed and this led me to not become an architect.
I did find it rather interesting that the author is NOT an architect and never was. But you don't have to be something in order to research it and write about it now do you? Of course not. The author did however pursue the field of architecture so they do have some first hand knowledge to draw on.
A very good book in my opinion, it was worth the purchase.
