Ran to the nearest pharmacy and asked what is the best...the pharmacist was of little help, but got out her little med book and said that Nix has the best ingredient use it. Bought the NIX and Rid just in case. My husband picked out all the live ones he could find while I was gone (about 10 of them) I used the Nix, followed the instructions to a T...shammpoo w/ non conditioning shampoo; rinse; apply Nix to entire head/scalp/hair leave on 10 min....rinsed out with warm water. Combed thru her hair shocked to find 3 live ones still crawling around as happy as could be. The nit comb that comes with NIX...WHAT A JOKE! Her head was obviously loaded with nits since we had no idea she had lice to begin with, and after 2 swipes, they were all stuck in the comb and would not come out with anything! I tossed it in the trash and opened up the Rid to see what kind of comb that was...it was a tad better, its shaped more like a disposable razor and was at least easier to hold onto. I found it was easier just to pick the nits out with my finger nails and dip my finger in a glass of warm water to wash it off. The Nix box states (along w/their website) it is normal to find live ones a few hours after treatment but they shoudl be moving slower...nope. 3 days later, still live adult lice (which is so discouraging considering I nit picked 2 hours DAILY!)
Finally after the 3rd day I was no longer finding adult lice, just newly hatched nymphs (which luckily cannot lay eggs until they are several days old)...so again, I nit picked with my fingers in the AM before school and in the evening after school to still find at least 3 nymphs a day. I was at my wits end...I continuely washed all bedding, even used the toxic Rid spray they sell to use on couches and unwashable things, and with all this nit picking I was doing, how in the world did we still have live lice!!!!!!
Finally, I read that lice hate the smell and taste of peppermint, so I loaded her head with the only peppermint product I had....body lotion I bought at a craft fair, all natural ingredients with rosemary oil and peppermint oil. Her head felt and smelled fantastic since the Nix dried it out so badly she now had patchy spots of dryness and dandruff, not to mention extreme itching. I left it on her head until the following morning. I spotted one teeny tiny baby slipping and sliding up her bangs, got it and to my surprise...FINALLY found ZERO nymphs or nits. It was exactly 7 days since the last treatment and the box stated I shoudl repeat the nix if there was a live one, but since I figured I got it, and the Nix didn't seem to kill them anyway, why expose my child to more unncessary toxins.
My advice is, to stay calm, it is shocking at first, then so completely aggrivating, but with patience and time they will go away. We have been 5 days nit/nymph/lice free! I haven't stopped checking though, b/c I'm now totally OCD over this issue, ha.
Get a good metal nit comb, wish I would have done that...I actually ordered the Robi Comb from this site, but it has been 5 days and it still isn't here, but since it dectects live lice, you better believe I will use it daily for a few more weeks, and then weekly on her hair to make sure we never get another infestation like this again! I don't know if the peppermint actually did anything;;; but i do believe the lotion did, I think leaving something greasy on her head all night helped any remaining nits I was missing comb right out in the tub and like I said, the live one wasn't able to stay up near her scalp, it fell basically right out. Nit pick EVERYDAY, at least once a day in good lighting...I found her sitting at the kitchen table in the afternoon w/the natural sunlight worked the best; get out anything and everything you can. You must break the cycle of adults laying eggs..once you have collected all the adults, you have a few days to make sure you get all the newly hatched babies and any nits you left behind. If you do not nitpick, you will never get rid of this condition.
Good luck and remember, it is not your fault or your childs fault they have lice. It is nothing to be ashamed of.
