Hiring the Best and the Brightest: A Roadmap To MBA Recruiting Review

Hiring the Best and the Brightest: A Roadmap To MBA Recruiting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As this review is written, America is still in a recession. Layoffs abound. Hiring is down or frozen at most companies. Employers who recruited on college campuses have cancelled the offers made to graduating students. Employers have hunkered down for a tight period that may last a few months or, as some pessimists forecast, for years.
While campus recruiting is down dramatically, wise employers will still visit top colleges and universities looking for the best and the brightest. If they're just going to hire a few people, it makes sense to go for the cream of the crop. The question becomes just how to do this kind of specialized recruiting in an employment market that was highly competitive, then became quiet, but that will pick up again. Hiring top MBAs-and other highly desirable candidates-is now a strategic issue. To maintain a competitive advantage now and later when the pace picks up again, it's essential to gain the knowledge and insight that fosters high performance and stunning results. There hasn't been much written about this specialized field. Now there's a book that will teach you how. Whether you're a neophyte at this kind of recruiting or an old hand, you will learn from Taguchi.
Some things change; some remain the same. Taguchi presents a wide range of accepted protocols that have not-and will not-change. All of these elements are important for recruiters to fully understand if they are to gain the needed cooperation and support of the career professionals at their targeted schools. One thing that is changing is that "compensation may have won out in the past, but nowadays it takes a whole lot more to attract and keep top talent." This is a job that must be done well, since so much is riding on your success.
Reading this book, I learned that there are four phases to MBA recruiting: up-front preparation, pre-recruitment, interviews, and second rounds and offers. Cutting corners won't work; each of these phases must be handled carefully. Each of these phases is explained for the reader in chapters 3, 4, 5, and 7. Chapter 6? Page after page of lessons learned by 15 experienced recruiters, a treasure in itself. This author has done her homework. The chapter on Best Practices and Worst Mistakes brings out more lessons to learn from.
Chapter 10 is by far the largest: School Profiles of the Top Twenty Picks. For each school, the book presents an overview of the MBA program and what degrees are granted. On campus recruiting at that institution is explained, with advice, followed by a school-specific list of dos and don'ts. Other recruiting options and key go-to people are included. While this is incredibly valuable information that will save recruiters a considerable amount of time, the personal resources could become outdated quickly. Hint: use this information now!
Other helpful chapters cover advice for established companies and for start-ups. The chapter on recruiting on the fly may be particularly valuable if you simply don't have time to plan and design an elaborate recruiting program. If the economy heats up quickly or you have a fast-growing company with immediate needs, this chapter will be a vital resource. Web recruiting is explored in chapter 14, followed by a couple of chapters on retention. There is no question that developing and keeping the MBAs you hire is critical, but the title of the book is specifically hiring. It's nice to have the obligatory retention chapters, but the book is strong without them. The three appendices provide some metrics and additional resources.
Bonus insight: Sherrie Taguchi's experience glows in this book. She gained experience as Vice President of University Relations for Bank of America and Director of Corporate Human Resources for Dole Packaged Foods. Now she's on the other side of the desk as Director of MBA Career Management and Management Communication at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Her conversational writing style gives the reader the feeling of sitting in a big, comfy chair in front of a warming fire, chatting away about how specialized college recruiting really works . . . the inside story.

For 85% this book is breathtaking and fascinating. No doubt, it's a new look on usual things in Paris. Paris is my most favorite city in the world and I collect photo albums about it for a long time, thus I can assure you that it will be a good deal to buy it. Its weaknesses: there are usual things (though from unusual point of view, 15% of the book is devoted to some interiors of shops and bars(do you want to pay for product placement?, the disk is attached to this book, which includes some digital panoramas, included in the book (however, my Quick Time Player did not manage to find some files (most interesting I should admit) though it seems they are there).

Using a digital camera, an electronic tripod, and digital imaging technology, photographer Nick Wood has developed a new way to photograph landscapes and cityscapes, placing the viewer in the center of dramatic 360º panoramas. In 360º Paris, the follow-up to 360º New York and 360º London, Wood uses this revolutionary process to shed new light on one of the world's most beautiful cities. Including images of well-known landmarks seen with fresh eyes (Notre-Dame, the Louvre, the Champs-Elysées), as well as the singular and distinctive locales visitors love to discover (the home of Godiva chocolates, a market for exotic birds, the "Paris Plage" along the banks of the Seine), 360º Paris is the perfect souvenir of the City of Light. The accompanying CD-ROM includes all of the photographs as QuickTime movies.AUTHOR BIO: Nick Wood is a London-based photographer whose work spans a broad range of subjects, from portraiture to architecture. Good grief! I cannot believe the reviews that are complaining because a book subtitled "100 Accredited Schools that Offer Bachelor's, Master's, Doctorates, and Law Degrees by Home Study" does not list thousands of degrees!
Okay, so maybe they should change the title to "The Top 100 degrees by Home Study." Maybe Amazon.com should include the blurb on the back cover that makes it very clear that this is a selected nonexhaustive listing.
It is true that the entries do not carry a lot of information. In fact, it looks as if the publishers simply took the quarter-page entries from Bear's other book and changed the type face so it would take up a whole page. But none of the directories are exhaustive treatments. I know: I've read them all. An exhaustive directory would be a thousand pages long and cost hundreds of dollars.
Bear's entries do carry enough information for you to know if you have any interest in following up on the ample contact information. (Unlike many other references in the field, Bear's contact information is very accurate.)
If you want a listing of thousands of schools, look into Bear's Guide to Earning Degrees Nontraditionally.
I've read Peterson's, Thorson's, and Princeton's; and I'm here to tell you: Bear's is best. If you want behind the scenes stuff and honest opinions rather than just listings, if you want a good general education on the distance education scene today, buy College Degrees by Mail & Modem or Bear's Guide.
I am very happy with my piddling ... investment and feel I got way more than my money's worth.

I purchased this book for my nephew, who was a HS Senior. Although he likes school, college was not for him. Like many HS Seniors, he did not know what he wanted to do, or what kind of careers he might like. I gave him the book. He read at least some of it. I was surprised to see how excited he was after looking at the book. He decided on a career path and has applied and been accepted in a Drafting program at a Vocational School. The book was well worth the excitement in his eyes. He feels focused and for the momement he has found a career for him. The book gives lots of information about careers and what it is like to be a ... He has showed the book to his friends and they seem just as thrilled with the content as he was. I think every HS junior or senior should look at this book for ideas on how to spend the rest of their life.

This is an excellent "how to" book for students of Russian universities seeking a dual degree under an agreement between Russian universities and the Empire State College (ESC) of the State University of New York (SUNY). Drawing from his experience with the Russian educational system as compared to that of ESC, the author effectively presents a step-by-step instruction on how to obtain a dual degree. It includes a detailed explanation of degree requirements at ESC, offering both bachelors and masters degrees in a variety of specialties. The book offers intensive information about such topics as the benefits of dual degrees, requirements at ESC, choosing a specialty, crafting of an individualized degree program, tuition, and other pertinent questions in a refreshingly straightforward manner. Overall, it offers a time saving, practical approach to students seeking dual degrees with the Empire State College. The book also includes a section addressed to deans of colleges and discusses how to collaborate with ESC, partnership contracts, international faculty, and available grants. The author also reviews ESC's international centers, and online education, in general.

For years society has made mothers who choose to stay home with their children feel inferior. Those of us who have gone on to college are forever feeling the need to "apologize" for "wasting" our degrees. We are made to be as lessor members, if not failures of society. The realization is that God calls us where we need to be. Our call may be for a season or for a lifetime but that call whether in the workforce or at home, is the most important call on our lives. As mothers we can rest assured that our job is of the utmost value. Kim Goodnight shares her journey through her own fight with feelings of inadequacies, misgivings and emotional pain and offers Biblical examples and principles to help you not only discern God's call on your own life but to rejoice and revel in it.

Degrees of Difference Review

Degrees of Difference
If you like a good mystery, you may enjoy this book, but it is much more than just a mystery story. And although it is a novel, in parts it reads more like a treatise on the ills of society, particularly American society, specifically through the eyes of someone who grew up during a time when America was much more predictable than it is today.
And although the plot is a good one-a priest dies mysteriously and wheels are set in motion to try to determine if he was murdered, and if so, why-the book's theme is the main thing here. That can be summed up as follows: give me that old time Roman Catholic religion-it's good enough for me. The author does not try to hide the fact that he is a disillusioned Roman Catholic-still a Roman Catholic in spite of the narrator's owning up to being an apostate from the faith (an admission nonetheless not solidly confirmed in the way things work out in the novel)-who regrets almost everything that has changed in the Roman Church since Vatican II. There is a lot of blame to go around, and some readers may recognize specific real priests, cardinals, church leaders in the guise of the characters presented in this work of fiction.
Readers who grew up in Brooklyn in the Fifties will also find much here to enjoy, and if you grew up in Bay Ridge or South Brooklyn, you will be happily reminded of how good life was there at that time.
Although just 180 pages long, there's quite a lot to ponder. A fast read-provided you don't stop to think about all the implications the author stirs up-and a good read at that!

Joe Ratigan is divorced, alienated and living in California when he learns of the death of a man of whom he has a vague recollection from his young years in Brooklyn. He contacts the dead man''s family and is drawn reluctantly into matters about which he knew and cared little, but which he comes to understand go a long way to explaining the condition in which the world finds itself. Ratigan becomes deeply entangled in the dead man''s affairs when he meets the dead man''s sister. Her questions and her prodding induce him to travel from California to Rome, New York and Washington in search of answers. Among the memorable characters providing answers are priests and bishops whose views and practices help explain the collapse of Catholicism in the last third of the twentieth century. The story begins from the standpoint of a first person, and is then intertwined with a third-person account of related events. The two threads become one as the story unfolds. Hedonism and self-sacrifice contest the battleground that is Ratigan throughout the book as he tries to make sense of the matter into which he was unwillingly drawn -- but, as in life, humor erupts periodically to reward the reader with breaks from the deadly serious nature of the work.

Degrees of Grace Review

Degrees of Grace
Average Reviews:

Montana St. Claire has a lot going in her life, which includes raising her young daughter alone, dealing with people on the job, and getting over her first love. However, her biggest problem is that Satan is after her soul and uses every vice known to trick her into turning towards him. Fortunately, Montana is secure in her faith and knows that God is the head of her life and the source of her happiness and success. But, just as expected in the real world, a few curve balls, heartaches, and feelings of doubt surface and threaten the balance on which she's built her life.

Her co-worker has it out for her and uses her own friend to ensure Montana's downfall. The love of her life has returned, supposedly a changed man and missing the characteristics of the culprit responsible for breaking her heart. There is also a secret she's been withholding that may change not only her life, but that of her daughter, possibly for the worse. Through these situations and others, Montana fights to maintain her sanity and conviction in the Spirit.

In an original twist of casting Satan and God as characters in the book, Marcelle Morgan Payne has given the readers an extra depth with her story. The fight between good and evil is clearly demonstrated through not only the actions of the characters, but the circumstances in which they find themselves. There is a potpourri of manipulation, chaos, and pain inflicted on the characters, but the good is also shown as Montana struggles to live true to her Christian teachings. DEGREES OF GRACE is an inspiring and endearing story of the power of God's Word and the blessings bestowed upon those who do believe. Fast-paced and moving, while at the same time witty and uplifting, DEGREES OF GRACE is a welcome addition the Christian Fiction genre.

Degree of Risk Review

Degree of Risk
Average Reviews:

"The degree of risk to be taken should never exceed that determined by the humanitarian importance of the problem to be solved by the experiment" - from the dust jacket.
Author Josef Wilson takes two major risks with his new novel, *Degree of Risk.* First of all, the suspense thriller is based upon *very* contemporary events. Set in that relatively short period of time between the September 11th terrorist attacks and the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, its timeline has already been overtaken by events. Secondly, the basic premise of the novel is that the Pentagon deliberately poisoned veterans of the first Gulf War in 1990-91, not a topic likely to win the author any dinner invitations from Secretary Rumsfeld and company. The premise is lent credence by a brief forward written by the daughter of a deceased weapons scientist at the U.S. military's Aberdeen Proving Grounds who claims that her father's death was directly attributable to his work.
As for the novel itself, *Degree of Risk* contains a plot worthy of the television show *The X-Files.* Hot shot young attorney Leesa Lambert, daughter of a United States Senator, and her best friend, former Special Forces operative Garth Porter, battle an evil Pentagon conspiracy to cover up the real cause of Gulf War syndrome. According to the story, injections given to most of the veterans who fought in Iraq the first time were a failed attempt by the military brass to inoculate the troops from the radioactive effects of new and deadly American weapons made with depleted uranium. The conspiracy is headed by the Secretary of Defense himself, who hires another former Special Forces operative to assassinate all potential witnesses.
As America prepares to invade Iraq again, Lambert files a multi-billion lawsuit against the Pentagon, creating a media frenzy and alienating her from both her father and her politically minded fiancé. The story then splits time between the courtroom battles and the assassin's attempts to keep the cover up intact. Author Wilson is a very good writer who knows how to effectively build suspense. Whether or not you buy into the basis for his story, you'll find yourself inevitably pulled along by it. Befitting any good suspense novel, the climax is explosive and very satisfying.
Overall, an exciting and politically charged thriller that is certain to raise a few eyebrows.
A Futures Magazine book review.

I felt very disappointed after I had found that this book was merely a 'yellowpage' listing all the colleges that offered certain fields of study programs. That is exactly what the title of the book has suggested! The book is nearly 700-page thick but I find that only few pages are really useful. If you once had a chance to have a glimpse to the inside of this book in a bookstore, just looked up what you want and left the book on the bookshelf. But still be disappointed by the fact that there were no rankings and no reasonably detailed descriptions of programs. Thanks Amazon.com to have offered a lower price.

Third Degree is a page turner from the start. It grabbed me and took me to dark places I didn't know existed. Matt Kincaid is the kind of hero who gets the job done, no matter what the price. He leads this story through exciting twists and turns, facing his own humanity as he fights the total lack of it in the villain. He refuses to give in to the bad guy even when there is no chance of winning. This book drew me into a sick, yet fascinating world and trapped me there. Until I reached the end, the kids didn't get dinner, the hubbie didn't get a hello and the phone did not get answered. An absolutely riveting read! I can't wait for Mr. Kasminoff's next book.
