(More customer reviews)My child's pediatrician usually recommends taking a holistic approach in treating cold or allergy symptoms. I usually agree with her that side effects from many medicines are worse than the condition they are treating.
Additionally, my children don't usually like the taste or form of most medicines.
This is why I'm so thankful we got to try Children's Claritin Grape Chewables through my being a BzzAgent. My child likes the flavor and the all-day relief from runny nose and watery eyes that she gets without drowsiness!
I would give this the very highest rating if it would also work as a decongestant, since it seems to me that stuffiness is also a part of allergies.

(More customer reviews)As I've said, I experience spring allergies that cause me A LOT of discomfort. I'm usually miserable for weeks with watery and itchy eyes and a runny nose that just LOVES to give me problems. So, I have to take something to try to ease the discomfort somewhat.
Claritin does a great job of easing that discomfort. While it may not solve the problem entirely, I find that it does wonders for the watery and itchy eyes, which is usually my biggest problem. When I take Claritin, it does a great job of decreasing that factor. My eyes get clear, they very rarely feel itchy, and it's a problem I don't have to worry about.
However, Claritin seems to lack in the runny nose department. It does nothing for my nose. In fact, I had to buy a nasal pump to take care of my nose, which seems to be working a lot better. With how much these pills cost, you'd think that it'd really take care of the nose as well. Then again, it may vary with different people. I just know that it doesn't help me a lot in that area.
The plus side is that the pills are easy to use. You only take one a day, which is a lot better than having to take pills every four to six hours. Just take one a day, and you're set. You don't have to worry about taking another one again until the next day, so it's easy to keep track of how many doses you've taken.
The downside is the price. They're very expensive. I'm sure there are other brands out there that probably cost less that do basically the same thing, but I don't know of any at the moment. I just use this. And the other downside is that it really seems to be lacking in helping the runny noses (again, maybe this varies from person to person).
All in all, Claritin does more than a mediocre job of helping my allergies. It really takes care of the watery and itchy eyes, which I'm grateful for. While it may be expensive and it may not cure or solve every allergy problem you have, it's worth checking out. I admit that it doesn't cure all of my problems, but I know I'd be in a lot worse shape if I didn't take it. -Michael Crane

(More customer reviews)Claritin (Loratadine) is an antihistamine that is used for typical allergy symptoms, such as a stuffy or runny nose, itchy watery eyes, scratchy throat (due to allergies), and rashes, itching, and hives. (It can also be used in some cases to limit asthma attacks).
Antihistamines block the release of histamine, a naturally occurring substance in the body that produces all the allergy symptoms we want to get rid of.
There are several antihistamines you can purchase over the counter, Claritin (Loratadine) is a second generation antihistamine, and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is the older first generation product. Claritin will be more expensive, as it is the newer of the two. Loratadine is also available as a cheaper generic product and is just as effective as the Brand name products of Claritin and Alavert.
The usual dose of Loratadine is 10 mg a day. This offers an advantage over the first generation antihistamines (Benadryl), in that they are dosed every 8 hours. The main and most significant advantage of Loratadine over the first generation antihistamines is that Loratadine will not cause drowsiness and has less overall side effects and less adverse interactions with other medications (and alcohol).
People with liver disease should discuss the use of Loratadine with their doctor. Pregnant women should avoid using Loratadine as studies have shown a risk to the fetus.
Claritin (Loratadine) is very effective in treating allergy symptoms. I like the non-sedating quality and the once daily dosing.

Generic medications such as Diphenhydramine" are equally effective as the "name-brand" drugs such as Benadryl. Diphenhydramine is a medication that suppresses histamine release from cells, thus it is labelled as an "anti-histamine". Histamine is the compound in the body that produces all the symptoms of allergies, such as itching, swelling, redness, rash, hives, etc.
A "capsule" dose of Diphenhydramine is 25 mg, with the usual adult dose being 1-2 pills. This medication used to be a prescription product but became an over-the-counter medication in the 1990's. It is very effective in relieving allergy symptoms. The major side-effect of Diphenhydramine is drowsiness, which some manufacturers use to their advantage, packaging this medication as a sleeping aid, and a very effective one at that.
One precaution, don't mix this medication with any other depressants, such as alcohol, anti-anxiety agents, barbiturates, etc. The combined effect will produce profound sedation. In men, diphenhydramine can cause a prostate urinary retention problem.
Use diphenhydramine for allergy relief or as a sleeping pill - both uses work very well. I first used Diphenhydramine for relief of hives and it was very effective. If you are mentally and physically tired after taking this medication for an allergy, then switch to the over-the-counter Claritin, which has no drowsiness. It is much more expensive than Diphenhydramine, but the non-drowsy formula is a real benefit.

(More customer reviews)I have endured chronic allergy problems for years and tried a wide variety of allergy relief medications both prescription and non-prescription. During this process I discovered Benadryl and found it to be a useful medication. I was delighted when diphenhydramine hydrocloride became an over-the-counter drug and was available at reasonable prices.
I have usually found it at the grocery store and bought what I needed a little at a time; my grocery store is now frequently out of stock with a sign that says their suppliers do not have it available for them. A little of that goes a long way and I decided to check out Amazon and as I might have suspected they had an abundant selection from which to choose and I selected this product at a much better price than what I had been paying.
One of the fringe benefits of this product is its value as a sleep aid. The chemical product is sold as a sleep aid at a generally much higher price. I usually limit myself to occasional use as a matter of principle.
It has been very effective at controlling my allergy symptoms and I have used it as required for many years with no apparent ill effect.
The price and the product are perfect for my uses and I recommend it highly.

(More customer reviews)Over the years, I've tried a lot of different over the counter medicine products (and products in general) that don't work very well. But Afrin, I'm happy to say, is an exception. It does exactly what it's supposed to do, every time.
Sometimes during the winter I get so congested that I can't breathe at all through my nose. This means that I can't get to sleep, either, so having a product that allows me to breathe isn't just a nice convenience: it greatly enhances the quality of my life. When you're already sick, the last thing you need is to not get good sleep!
But often, with just one squirt of Afrin in each nostril, I can breathe much more easily in a matter of minutes. Even when I'm most congested, I've never used this product and not had it make me be able to breathe much more clearly so that I could get to sleep. It lasts a long time, too - long enough to get me through the night.
I highly recommend it if you're having trouble with nasal congestion.

(More customer reviews)I love Claritin as it has worked wonders for my 4 year old son, who suffers from seasonal allergies...but he along with his 5 year old sister refuse to take this liquid Claritin because they claim it is "yuck". I have tried it myself and find that it does have a slight medicine taste. Because of that "yuck" taste, my children prefer the Claritin RediTabs. Those are so expensive that I went to our childrens pediatrician in search of a cheaper method to treat their allergies and I was informed that the childrens dosage contains 5mg of the active ingredient and the adult dosage contains 10mg...thus cutting the adult RediTab in 1/2 results in the same dosage as the childrens formula. This has been a wonderful help in paying for my son's Claritin because an adult box of 30 RediTabs lasts him 60 days for the same price as a childrens box of 20 chewable tablets. Now, I am no doctor and am only relaying to you what my childs pediatrician said was OK to do. :-)

(More customer reviews)I have had a severe cold now for 5 days. The Chlortrimeton (Chlorpheniraminein ) this medication ( antihistamine) does nothing for a running nose or sneezing.
This is the second time I've tried this for a cold. Maybe it would work for an allergy as opposed to a cold. but for a cold it's useless. Does absolutely nothing to dry up your nose at all.
And there is nothing else on the market for those with hypertension and colds. So just buy 3 or 4 boxes of kleenex.

My son, who is 4, suffers from seasonal allergies. The children's Claritin works great for him, but it is so expensive that I went to our family pediatrician in search of a cheaper method. His pediatrician informed me that the childrens Claritin contains 5mg of the active ingredient, and the adult RediTabs contains 10mg...thus cutting the RediTab in half results in the same dosage as the childrens. This has been a wonderful help in paying for my son's Claritin because an adult box of 30 RediTabs (this listing is for a 50ct box) lasts him 60 days for the same price as a childrens box of 20 chewable tablets. Needless to say that it was not working that well and in the process was making my son drowsy even though it was marketed as Non-drowsy. I am a BzzAgent and I was excepted into the Children's Claritin Campaign I was excited to try something new but not really holding my breath for good results. Well, I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. It worked so well and didn't make him drowsy within about thirty minutes he was back outside and playing again. I will never buy another allergy product again. Only Claritin for this family! My only gripe is that it doesn't come in any other flavors other than grape, and my son isn't to crazy about grape flavored. I wish they had bubblegum. Thats why I didn't give it a whole five stars they need to expand there flavors. :) I'am a BzzAgent and I received this product for free to review.

(More customer reviews)This product is relatively cheap and will work as advertized. I like it better than the more expensive brand names, such as Tylenol PM, or others that have the exact same active ingredient.
Like virtually all sleeping pills on the market, this one uses the active ingredient in Benadryl - diphenhydramine. Diphenhydramine is a sedating antihistamine. The sedation from 50 mg of diphenhydramine will cause you to become drowsy and sleepy, and will likely keep you this way for about 8-12 hours. Thus, not only will you likely sleep the night through, but you will have a groggy sleep hangover the next day until about noon.
Since this is an antihistamine, you will likely experience other mild side-effects, such as imbalance, urinary retention, and mild dry mouth. The urinary retention is of particular concern in men with prostate or bladder problems. The side effects are transient and wear off as the medication is metabolized and excreted from the body.
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is not habit-forming or addictive in a physical way. It has the potential for psychological addiction. Thus, it is best used as an occasional aid for sleeplessness, not an every-night event.
