The Last Book In The Universe Review

The Last Book In The Universe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My youngest child (almost 11 as of this writing) often enjoys having books read aloud, in the evening or while we're on vacation far from the television. It can be a challenge to find something we'll both enjoy. My only stipulation is that I get to pick the book (and that they won't come from his favorite horror series books) His stipulation is that we'll stop reading if the first chapter is boring.
This book was one we both enjoyed. We read a chapter or two a night, sometimes more when it was really exciting. We always looked forward to reading some more.

The main character is an outcast within an outcast society, Spaz (an epileptic loner.) He meets some other misfits -- an elderly writer in a world without books, a homeless five year old who can only say one word and an advanced (improved) human who goes against the rules of her own perfect Eden.
The story, told in first person from the view of Spaz, was engrossing, filling our minds with sometimes horrifying visions of a new futuristic world, where a huge earthquake years ago upset civilization as we now know it. The gray skied, cement grounded cities (Urbs) are run by latchlords, gang lords who make and enforce their own ever changing rules. They can and do eliminate anyone for any reason - or no reason at all. Escape from reality is sought by nearly everyone, including the latchlords. Most people have become addicts to needles inserted into the brain, giving the viewer a realistic mind show with images of a perfect world. Mindprobes have replaced drugs, TV and video games, but they are beginning to disrupt the 'leadership' of the latchlords, bringing anarchy and total destruction to the Urbs.
Far away from the Urbs (which are connected by pipelines) is Eden, home of the "proovs" who are genetically improved humans, thought to be superior to the 'normals.' "Normals" aren't allowed in Eden, where they could actually see a blue sky and green grass, things they 'd heard about from old timers, but which they believe can only be fairy tales.
Spaz's foster sister Bean - the only human who means anything to him - is dying in another Urb, and this emotionally numbed boy decides to risk leaving his Urb and travel through the pipelines to visit her one last time.
He is unhappy to end up journeying with his outcast acquaintances Ryter and Chox), aided by Lanaya (a perfect girl from Eden) on a journey to save Bean -- and while they're at it, to change the world. Likeable characters plus some who aren't so nice. A touch of violence and scary confrontations. A good book for encouraging discussions of prejudices, environmental issues, reading, writing and alternative communications.
We liked it!

Horse Diaries #1: Elska Review

Horse Diaries #1: Elska
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In Iceland, around the year 1000 A.D., most Icelandic horses spend their summers roaming free and their winters on farms working for humans. This book is the story of one young Icelandic filly. She is born in the summer, and a few months later when fall arrives, she and part of her herd are brought to the farm of a human family. The family's young daughter, Amma, becomes very close to the filly, and names her Elska. The horse and the young girl develop a strong bond. However, Amma's father decides to trade Elska to a neighbor, confusing Elska and breaking Amma's heart. Will they ever be reunited again?
Told from the point of view of Elska, this was a cute story that is sure to appeal to young girls who love horses, particularly those who also enjoy historical fiction. The book teaches some interesting facts about life for both horses and humans in Iceland in this time period. The illustrations were very well done and were adorable. I would definitely recommend this book to the target audience.

Success Without College: Why Your Child May Not Have to Go to College Right Now--and May Not Have to Go At All Review

Success Without College: Why Your Child May Not Have to Go to College Right Now--and May Not Have to Go At All
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Success Without College explodes many of the myths about college that abound in upscale suburban neighborhoods where parents expect all their children to go to the Ivy League and thrive. It helps you determine if your child is ready for college, or for a different kind of experience as early as age 15. More importantly, by improving the perspectives of parents, this book will change and reduce unrealistic pressures on youngsters that can make the teenage years difficult. In the process, parents can take satisfaction in helping launch their children onto a more productive path.
Despite the fact that U.S. high schools seem to create poorly educated students, a higher percentage of people leave those high schools to attend college than in any other country in the world. College is expensive, and this is a great drain on families and students. Yet, most of those who go off to attend college will not graduate in 4 years. Many will never graduate, and will receive little of value to sustain them as people and economically. Frequent binge drinking seems to be the main experience that people get at college these days.
A great strength of this book is that it is based in part on personal experience. The author's own son went to college for two years and did poorly. He then went out to work, and began learning how he needed to proceed with his life in the process. For many young people, college right after high school is too soon. You have to be both academically and emotionally mature. More people are the former than the latter. The book has a wonderful quiz that you can use to assess the emotional maturity of your youngster. I thought the quiz was good because it picked up on issues that two of my children had (who actually did complete college in 4 years), which I should have paid more attention to at the time. Perhaps each of them would have gotten more out of college if they had worked or done volunteer work for a year or two first.
The book also addresses what to do with the child who is having trouble with high school. You will also find out about a variety of resources for dealing with emotional problems, learning disorders, and career planning. There are counselors who can help and programs that you can pursue. In many cases these cost money. In other cases (like the Army), they just take investigation.
Given that more young people will not graduate from college than will, you would think that there would be more books about succeeding for those who do not go to college than those who do. It's just the opposite. Whether or not you think your children will and should go to college right away, I recommend you read this book. You may get some good ideas that may change your mind, and make your child's life much better!
If you are like me, you have not done enough thinking about how to prepare your child for life, as well as education. This book is a superb resource to do just that.
My main quibble about the book is that it relies on a few counterexamples to explain how well those without college educations can do. I would have liked to have seen a more systematic discussion about how those who go without college can always outperform the clueless liberal arts major. That would have given the book the necessary legitimacy to make parents feel terrific about exploring the noncollege options.
After you have finished this book, I suggest that you discuss what you learned from it with another parent to help pass along the message. If your child is willing to read, you can have a much better discussion about what to do next if both of you read this book first.
After you have had those discussions and taken appropriate actions, I also suggest that you consider where else you may have misconceptions about being a parent. What should your children be doing to prepare to be effective volunteers? What should they be doing to prepare to become lifelong learners after they leave school? What values will serve them the best? How can they learn to be good spouses and parents? You may be able to make improvements in these areas as well, based on your own thinking and research. Good luck!

If your child seems indecisive about college, don't read the riot act, read this landmark book instead. College is not the only alternative. A New York Times editor and concerned parent tells you why and helps you to find happy alternatives to starting college before your child is ready. As an educated, committed parent, Linda Lee harbored the usual expectation of a prestigious college degree as the illustrious preface to a top-flight career for her child. Some fifty thousand dollars and several disastrous report cards later, Lee recognized that her seemingly rational expectations were proving far-fetched and that her son was simply not ready for college. Moreover, she was shocked to discover that his experience was not the exception but the rule; only 26 percent of students receive a bachelor's degree within five years. Why, then, are parents led to believe that their children must go to college immediately and that it is the right choice for everyone? If not attending college worked for Bill Gates, Harry S. Truman, Thomas Edison, and William Faulkner, why can't it work for your child and what are your alternatives?Success Without College is a groundbreaking book that reveals the surprising facts of why many bright kids are not suited for college (or at least not right after high school). Lee's accessible, knowledgeable style informs parents why this should be more a source of pride than shame by providing profiles of students and parents from around the country and their creative, positive solutions to the college dilemma. With a college education now costing an average of a hundred thousand dollars, maybe it's time for American parents to reconsider: Do you really need college to succeed?

Neu Becalm'd Review

I have tried sooooooo many different kinds of supplements for my sons ADHD and am pretty seriously trying to avoid medication. He has a very aggressive type and is prone to outbursts and meltdowns and this supplement has helped to calm them Wayyyyyyy down. It does not take away the struggle, does not cure him, but it makes him so much better off through the day. He is doing well in school and so most of his struggle comes at home with me, he is still very active, pestering his siblings any chance he gets, but he is so much happier and more aggreable the rest of the time because he is dealing with the over-stimulation of ADHD so much better. I think it may or may not work depending on the kids--but isn't it always worth the try when your options are chemical-based cover-ups?

Being allergic to corn, this is about the only non-drowsy allergy medication I could find that does not contain a corn by-product (starch, syrup). It's taste is not unpleasant and is a good treatment for those with allergies to inactive ingredients found in most allergy products.

I went into a local natural pharmacy and they recommended this product. I have a seasonal cough (twice yearly) that lasts for months at a time. After just two days of using this, my cough is virtually gone. It really helps to loosen up mucous. The taste isn't the best thing in the world, but it starts to grow on you after awhile.
Great product, good value, extremely effective.

Clarocet® Junior: Clarocet® Junior Easy-to-Swallow TabletsTM just for kids ages 7 to 13. Indicated to relieve occasional anxiety, mild mood changes or a depressed mood, and diffculty concentrating or paying attention due to everyday stress

My son was having severe stress every single day. He would have panic attacks, and usually he was having problems with his clothes. Only a parent with a child with similar problems can understand what I mean by 'problems with his clothes'! He has had severe anxiety since he was very small, and he's 9 now. I give him one clarocet jr a day, and he's a different person. (in a good way) :) Yay!!!! We went from having tears and emotions and high stress every day before school, much of those tears being mine after he left, to having peaceful days.
I know it sounds too good to be true, but in my case, it helped so much. It was not a behavior issue, it was an emotional one, and this seems to be just what he needed. It took the edge off of his fears.

My children all suffer from seasonal allergies & allergy season has definitely arrived with spring at our house. They complain of itchy, watery eyes, sneezing & runny noses. I am a BzzAgent & received Claritin Grape Chewables as part of my BzzKit, so we gave it a try the next time an allergy attack hit. My kids liked taking it, but even better, it works great. I gave them Claritin before school & they said they were allergy-free the rest of the day.

Digestive Advantage Children's Lactose Intolerance Therapy, Cherry, Chewable Tablets 30 ea

This is very helpful for children with lactose intolerence. While my daughter can still only eat/drink lactose free products, this helps with incidental milk products in other things she may eat. It does not however let her eat anything she wants. She has been intolerant since switching to milk at age 1 and this product has really helped. She likes the taste and I feel comfortable occasionally giving her 2 a day. I would have given it 5 stars but I didn't want everyone to think it is a cure all but it is a big help.
