For those of us like me who are (or have been) fully motivated to achieving their goals, in spite of having no degree, this book was a letdown.
It was indeed a "hype" type book. The first chapter that was actually meaningful to me, was Chapter 11, because I am fairly confident with who I am, and I have set some long-term goals, even though I don't have a degree and I don't ever plan on getting one. I simply need to learn how to influence people who have a particularly dim view of non-graduates.
If you're like me, a successful professional who is slowly working his/her way up a huge corporate ladder (perhaps working in a Dilbert environment), then this book isn't for you, because you probably already have set goals, and have the motivation, and the main things standing in your way, are: learning how to cut through bureaucracy and still do what you enjoy doing; how to win over people, even though your lack of degree will inevitably come up again and again with some of them; how to answer someone, when they ask about your having no college degree; how to prepare convincing resumes showing your skills and experience, but without listing a degree, etc.
I've worked as a software engineer in a large corporation for 4 years now, despite having no college degree. I have been motivated to reach this goal for over 10 years, starting even before I was old enough to go to college.
Recently, I decided I had to make the difficult choice and leave one software division of the company, to work for another, simply because the former one had management which overvalued a college degree. They stopped giving me raises, or giving me more work that I liked, or any other form of rewards, and they made it explicit (in writing) that I had hit a "glass ceiling" in their organization, by not having a college degree. I knew better than this (degrees don't define who you are), and so I left to work somewhere else inside the company, a position which still fits my goals, and for which the qualifications are similar.
This book may be good for you if you're unsure of your goals, need a motivational kick in the pants, or if you give up easily, but if you're the persistent type, who has had their goals set for a long time, but who keeps having to overcome political obstacles centered around your having no degree, and if you are someone who has an overriding reason (mental, physical, religious, financial, etc.) why they can't finish college and get a degree, then I'm afraid you must look elsewhere for answers.
Oh, and the book somewhat assumes that all readers value and spend money the same way, or can be lured by the promise of a rich future. Not so, for some of us. Some of us are just trying to receive respect and compensation on the job for our contributions, despite our not having a college degree. To us, it's more like job discrimination -- nothing to do with motivation, or with material measures of "success" such as income.
The book's hidden thesis may be that you must go into business for yourself, if you want to succeed without a college degree, in certain professions. I don't believe this.
