The Mechanical Euclid: Containing the Elements of Mechanics and Hydrostatics Demonstrated After the Manner of the Elements of Geometry; and Including ... As Requisite for the Degree of B. A. to Which Review

(More customer reviews)My comments refer only to the quality of the scanning and reprint, not to the content of the book. Unlike the General Books reprint of this work which is wholly worthless because their money-saving "optical character recognition" scanning process deletes all of the diagrams and turns all of the proofs into unreadable nonsense, this is a true optical scanning of the original pages as graphics files, faithfully reproducing the original diagrams, text and pagination. However, the physical scanning was somewhat carelessly carried out, causing some loss of text and quality.
On four pages the person doing the scanning did not hold the book flat against the scanner, causing some distortion but leaving all of the text readable, or cutting off only a few letters but leaving enough that the word can be guessed: pages vi, xi, 150, 179. More seriously, on nine pages a significant portion of text (less than 10% of the text on each such page) is missing or obliterated and cannot be reconstructed without consulting another copy of the book: pages viii, 28-29, 114, 158-59, 176, 184-85. These scanning errors are very obvious: big blotches of ink obscuring chunks of text, or the page not centered on the scanner (p. viii), or the book being scanned having a page corner folded down (p.114), and should have been easily caught and corrected if there was any sort of editorial check before the scanned images were sent to the printer.
Of the two, obviously this from Nabu Public Domain Reprints is a real reprint and worth buying if you want to own the book, unlike the General Books product which is just a scam and a fraud and should never have been offered for sale. But I hope that Nabu will improve their quality control to match that of the Kessinger or Elibron optical-scan reprints, which I have never found to be published with obvious scanning errors like these.
Added April 16: The complete text of this book is available on Google Books, with some of the same scanning errors, but without the big blotches of ink: these seem to have been printing errors from Nabu, not scanning errors. So replacement pages can be printed from that source.
