The Go-Getter: A Story That Tells You How To Be One Review

The Go-Getter: A Story That Tells You How To Be One
Average Reviews:

This one needs to be added to every young business person's essential reading list. Though written in the 1920's, it does not feel dated, and its lessons and examples are still applicable today.
The young character in the book, Bill Peck, has just returned from the war and is determined to get a job with the leading lumber company. He displays confidence, and that's the first lesson in the book. He refuses to take no for an answer when rejected by two of the top executives of the company. He takes his case directly to the founder of the company, who is impressed by his determination. Bill's confidence is demonstrated by the fact that he had his business cards printed before he had even spoken to the company.
The second lesson is execution. Bill doesn't just throw out empty promises, but promptly delivers when turned loose in the field. It does not matter that he has been given an inferior, difficult to sell product. He finds a way to make it irresitible to his customers.
Finally, the company's founder decides to give Bill the final test, asking him to "deliver the blue vase." Bill shows his resourcefulness and refusal to quit in fulfilling this quest.
Though you can knock this book out in just one sitting, its lessons will stay with you throughout your career.

Hello, Android: Introducing Google's Mobile Development Platform (Pragmatic Programmers) Review

Hello, Android: Introducing Google's Mobile Development Platform (Pragmatic Programmers)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've read several books on Android from cover to cover, and skimmed several others, and "Hello, Android" is hands-down the best introduction to Android development.
Here's why I say that --
You really can get through the book in a day or two. The explanations are clear, the topics focus on what's relevant to getting started in Android development, and when you're done you have the skills to dive into the SDK to continue learning.
There is a consistent example project that is developed throughout the book. I found this very helpful, because it showed me how all the different parts fit together. For example, launching activities from an existing activity, using multiple classes in your project, adding preferences, etc.
There are very few (if any) "gotchas" in this book. I followed the examples step by step without any problem. I think some people have used the book's online forum to ask about which packages to import, but when I used Eclipse it was done automatically for me. (By the way, all the files are also online.)
Even after having many months of Android development under my belt, I find that I still refer back to this book from time to time. That's saying something for a book that sets out to be an introduction.
Remember, this book is a great introduction. If you already know Android and are looking for a deep-dive, look elsewhere. But if you are curious about all the excitement around Android and have a few hours to spare, spend them with this book and find out what developing in Android is all about.

Android is a software toolkit for mobile phones, created by Google and the Open Handset Alliance. It's inside millions of cell phones and other mobile devices, making Android a major platform for application developers. That could be your own program running on all those devices. Within minutes, Hello, Android will get you started creating your first working application: Android's version of "Hello, World." From there, you'll build up a more substantial example: an Android Sudoku game. By gradually adding features to the game, you'll learn the basics of Android programming. You'll also see how to build in audio and video support, add graphics using 2D and 3D OpenGL, network with web pages and web services, and store data with SQLite. You'll also learn how to publish your applications to the Android Market. The #1 book for learning Android is now in its third edition. Every page and example was reviewed and updated for compatibility with the latest versions. Freshly added material covers installing applications to the SD card, supporting multi-touch, and creating live wallpaper. You'll also find plenty of real-world advice on how to support all the Android versions in use today-everything from Cupcake (Android 1.5) to FroYo (Android 2.2) and beyond. If you'd rather be coding than reading about coding, this book is for you.

Primitive Wilderness Living & Survival Skills: Naked into the Wilderness Review

Primitive Wilderness Living and Survival Skills: Naked into the Wilderness
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hands down this is the best survival book anywhere. The difference between this book and the majority of survival skills books is that most books will talk about why you should make a waterproof shelter and discuss the building of a waterproof shelter, but they won't tell you EXACTLY HOW to build it. If you read this book, you will be able to tan buckskin, construct baskets, make primitive pots, make effective and simple bows, make cordage, construct semi-permanent shelters, flintknapp basic tools, start fires from natural materials and much more.
This book is not about "surviving," rather it's about "thriving" in a wilderness situation. The McPhersons have written the best and easiest to read book you can find anywhere.
We liked this book so much we made it the book of the month at RFS Online for August 1999.

Online Education For Dummies Review

Online Education For Dummies

Anyone planning to take classes online or earn an online degree should read this book. It has super-helpful information so you will know exactly what to expect, how to be prepared, and how to succeed with online learning.
Even if you're good at using the Internet, there are lots of things about online classes that you might not expect. This book gives really good advice -- such as when to communicate with the instructor and how to manage group assignments and dynamics -- so that you don't have to learn any of these lessons the hard way.
Like all the 'Dummies' books, this book was easy to read and navigate. The sections are divided up so I could find exactly what I wanted to know. There are graphics pointing out the reminders, tips and warnings that are really important.

I ordered this book to see if the field of psychology was where I wanted to point my major, helped me realize that none of the paths this degree offers is for me. I would not have known that if I didn't order this book, which I am sooo glad I did.

98.6 Degrees: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive Review

98.6 Degrees: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive
Average Reviews:

Excellent book on survival. I am glad someone finally divides "SURVIVAL" from "Wilderness Living Skills" I would venture to say that most people that provide bad reviews of this book are looking for texts in Wilderness Living Skills. There are other books for that. I use 98.6 for a text book in our Search and Rescue Team training. In reality most victims succumb to hypothermia in survival situations other than trying to catch fish with a shoe string and a safety pin. It is reality at its best, presented in a humorous fashion.

Cody Lundin, director of theAboriginal Living Skills School in Prescott, Arizona, shares hisown brand of wilderness wisdom in this highly anticipated newbook on commonsense, modern survival skills for the backcountry, the backyard, or the highway. This is the ultimate book on how tostay alive-based on the principal of keeping the body's coretemperature at a lively 98.6 degrees.

In his entertaining and informative style, Cody stresses thata human can live without food for weeks and without water forabout three days or so. But if the body's core temperature dipsmuch below or above the 98.6 degree mark, a person can literallydie within hours. It is a concept that many don't take seriouslyor even consider, but knowing what to do to maintain a safe coretemperature when lost in a blizzard or in the desert could saveyour life. Lundin delivers the message with wit, rebellioushumor, and plenty of backcountry expertise.
