I have read the other reviews complaining about the battery life and I have to say I have had the complete opposite experience. True, the battery does not last as long as other digital thermometers, but with two kids who constantly want to check to see if they are "sick", I have had to replace the battery once (today, in fact), after owning it for over a year. There are so many positives about this thermometer that I would buy it again. It is also the one that my kid's elementary school nurse uses. Why do I love it? Read on:
1. It is ACCURATE!!! I own four different digital thermometers. Three of them my kids now use to play "doctor" because they are so inaccurate. Not only do the fluxuate, but none of them match each other. Often they are off by almost a full degree from each other. How do I know, you ask? I brought my thermometers with me into the doctor's office one time when my daughter was sick. I then matched those readouts to the doctor's high tech thermometer...and only the Vick's thermometer was the same.
2. The light readout: The thermometer flashes three different lights, depending on the temperature reading. If it is above 101, it flashes RED. Between 99-100, it flashes YELLOW and under 99, it flashes GREEN. My kids know that only red gets them out of school.
2.5 In addition, I have purchased other thermometers with a "light" read-out from brand-name medical suppliers, and the light only works at the beginning of the cycle, when the thermometer either says "ok" or "low". It does not light up after it has read the temperature, meaning I have to turn on an overhead light to read it. Why bother having it light up if you can't use it to actually read the temperature? The Vicks thermometer flashes the light at the end of the reading so you can see the final result, thus allowing me to read the temperature in the middle of the night without any problem at all.
3. The memory function: When you first turn on the thermometer, it will show you the last temperature reading. Really helpful to track fevers.
4. It is fast. No more waiting forever for the readout.
I do admit that it does go through batteries, but I am very willing to pay $2.49 for a replacement battery once a year to get an accurate thermometer. Also, because it does light up both at the beginning and the end of the measuring period, you have to expect it will go through batteries faster. I don't know why the other reviewers had such trouble with their thermometers, but mine works great (this is our second one, as our first one disappeared...I am sure it is under a bed or somewhere equally as weird). I highly recommend it.
