Struggling in the US? Move to China Review

Struggling in the US Move to China
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This might be the most honest and simultaneously most unreflective book I have read about life in China. It is the author's story of coming to China in March of 2006 with little money in his pocket and a failed life as an actor in LA, and how, within a year, he spoke `fluent' Chinese, had plenty of money and women and, well, a great material life. He explains how great life in `China' is (he actually only speaks of Beijing): cops are friendly, streets are safe, all Chinese are nice and warm, there are no taxes, and everyone apparently loves him. He gushes over making 18,000 RMB a month through a combination of being a part-time restaurant host, ESL teacher, sometime actor, and white office prop, and how he can live on 9,000 a month, which leaves him $1,200 a month in savings to buy a home and a car. What else? Other foreigners are rude and mean and pushy and act superior to Chinese, while he gets along with everyone. He lives in Wudaokou with most of the other foreigners, dances at the Sanlitun clubs, and has a great time trying to score Han girls. Though he assures his readers that he magically `knows' China, he does not appear to have a clue that having four different girl friends in a year will not make him cool in the eyes of Chinese people, especially guys.
As stupid as this book is, it is also profoundly accurate. If at one time `failed in London, try Hong Kong' was the mantra for Englishmen, while Americans gravitated to first Japan and Korea and later Taiwan, China today, or more accurately Beijing and Shanghai, are the promised lands for a new generation of white men who for various reasons have failed in their own societies. They of course do not think they have failed, but instead that society has failed them. Urban life in China is cheap, white guys, no matter how ugly or obnoxious they may be, can have passive and younger women, and the cops and authorities do not generally interrupt the party. So, in regard to foreigners - who are overwhelmingly male in a place like Beijing - Williams' account is more or less accurate. Cops do not bother them, some Han girls will sleep with them, most Chinese people will never speak critically to their faces, and life is, compared to North America, very cheap. The fundamental fact that life in `China' is clearly not a paradise for most Chinese doesn't really matter to the author. Then again, this is how colonialism has worked for centuries.
If only the title were, `Failed in America, try China', then Williams would be spot on. The United States does not just export its crappy beer these days (lan dai, AKA Pabst Blue Ribbon, remains in business in China for some mysterious reason), but also its second-rate citizens.
Oh, I know in advance that many people will complain how mean this review is. Whatever; as a Chinese guy in Beijing said to me, "the book sounds like something from the `Arabian Knights'".

A young American arrived in Beijing in spring, 2006 with little money, no friends, no job, and little knowledge of the language or culture. Within a year, he knew the language, had a fulfilling social life, wide connections and many interesting jobs. This book follows David Williams' incredible journey through modern China. He goes into detail about the freedoms that he feels in China, gives hard facts about the amount of violence and crime in the U.S. compared to China, and talks about the safe feeling he has living in China. He goes into detail about the incredibly low cost of living that he has living in China. He also tells about the way new Chinese friends have welcomed him, why Chinese women make such great girlfriends or wives, and why Chinese cuisine is healthier than American food. The most interesting and at times hilarious part of this book though, is the description of the many types of job opportunities that he has experienced in the Middle Kingdom. He works as a pastor at a Chinese wedding, becomes a foreign modeling and acting agent, and works on numerous TV commercials, shows, infomercials, exhibitions, and modeling shows. He works as an actor in an American movie with a well-known action star. He tells the story of how he one day, on a hunch, he strolled into the offices of a Beijing entertainment company, told them he wanted to work as an actor, and immediately became friends with the CEO, who offered him a part in a movie being filmed in Shanghai. David illustrates the many advantages to living in China. Whether it is to find more job opportunities, a good wife or husband, lots of friends, a fast, developing economy, a low cost, safer standard of living, or just more adventure, China is the place. Mr. Williams tells how he quickly integrated with the Chinese how he won a lot of friends fast, how he approaches every Chinese person he meets, and how he made friends with the right people. He tells how to become a zhongguotong , or old China hand and what it can mean for the successful career and social life of new foreigners living in China. He explains how he learned Chinese on his own (without the aid of classes or tutors) in less than a year, and how that propelled his success in winning over the Chinese people and finding many jobs. A very inspiring story about how one man moved to China and found a new life.

Swaziland: A Southbound Pocket Guide (Southbound Pocket Guides) (Southbound Travel Guides) Review

Swaziland: A Southbound Pocket Guide (Southbound Pocket Guides) (Southbound Travel Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, I must comment on the lack of travel guides for the country of Swaziland. Most books simply lump the country into a few pages and stick it into a South Africa travel guide, so the fact Fleminger took the time to write a book (with 256 pages!) on the traveling in the country must be applauded. Without question it is the most up to date and comprehensive resource out there.
In terms of content, this book was not what I expected, but ended up being exactly what I needed. Fleminger dedicates 100 pages (almost 40% of the book) to the history of the country. And not just recent history. His history starts with the earliest nomads and then really picks up in the 1800's. If you want to know all about the tribal struggles and colonialistic influences that shaped the modern country, then you will not be disappointed. If you are only interested in what to do and where to stay, then you may want to skip the first half of the book. (Again, I really appreciated this background since my wife and I are planning a move to the country, but I realize many readers may not be interested in this).
Fleminger focuses most of his time on the Hhohho and Manzini districts of the country, which makes sense because according to most visitors, these are the most popular areas. He also goes out of the way to give contact information for locations in and around Swaziland.
Overall a very helpful book. As most people will learn, the best approach to visiting Africa is to have a general idea of what you would like to do and then plan on deviating from that. Fleminger's book will certainly be useful in helping you do that.

This author wasn't content with daydreaming. He actually signed on as a passenger to a freighter with a round-the-world itinerary, bringing socks, books, and his trusty popcorn popper. Mr. Moses records his trials and triumphs, his delight and disappointment, and his great joy throughout the long voyage. Traveling on a tramp freighter would be a grand adventure if you are gifted with Mr. Moses' flexibility and humor - if not, then with luck, someone like him will be on board to show you how it is done.
This is a gripping must-read. Don't miss the very last words of the book.

360 Degrees Longitude: One Family's Journey Around the World Review

360 Degrees Longitude: One Family's Journey Around the World
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
How I came about this book I just can't remember, and it was just a few weeks ago! I found the authors website based on the book and then I pre-ordered it and got it only the day after it was officially released on July 1st, 2009. WARNING: Full on raving and 5 star shenanigans ahead...
I read this book in 2 days. Not an easy feat as I look after two girls, 9 and 2, AND a 44 year old kid posing as my husband.
Once I read the first few sentences I could not put it down. Now, granted, my husband and I have been talking about a trip like this for as long as we have been together, and we place world travel very high on our priority list, so that could be why I just inhaled the thing. But don't take my word for it either! Just check out Amazon.com! In just 6 weeks this non-fiction delight has garnered ONLY 5 star ratings, and rave reviews. And I can totally understand why.
John Higham is a rocket scientist. Not as in, "Oh gee, it doesn't take a rocket scientist." No, he really IS one. He and his wife took 10 years to plan the "world the round" trip (as one of his children exclaimed in their toddler years), and he not only gives great detail of their travels but it is entertaining as heck and hilarious at times! When was the last time you laughed out loud while reading a travel memoir other than a Bill Bryson? Not only is it wildly entertaining, it is also educational without being text-booky, and honestly? You just feel like you are along for the ride, the tandem bike ride, as that is how this family largely travelled. Surviving on ham sandwiches and hitting the off-off beat track and getting sidetracked by some crazy stuff, you will feel like you know each and everyone of these people intimately. Not only that, if you have any interest at all in travelling the world? This will definitely inspire you to google earth yourself an itinerary.
The other neat thing the author did, he created a layer within Google Earth and there are many photos and extra little anecdotes to follow along as you read. Every time you see the little Google Earth symbol in the text you can visit the website and see the added bonus! GENIUS! All in all a FANTASTIC read for anyone, but especially those of us wanting to travel with our kids.

Much more than atravel narrative 360 Degrees Longitude: OneFamily's Journey Around the World is a glimpse at what it means to bea "global citizen"—a progressively changing view of the world as seen throughthe eyes of an American family of four.
After more than a decade ofplanning, John Higham and his wife September bid their high-tech jobs andsuburban lives good-bye, packed up their home and set out with two children, ages eight and eleven, to travel around the world. In the course of the next 52weeks they crossed 24 time zones, visited 28 countries and experienced alifetime of adventures.
Making their way across the world, the Highamsdiscovered more than just different foods and cultures; they also learned suchdiverse things as a Chilean mall isn't the best place to get your ears pierced, and that elephants appreciate flowers just as much as the next person. But mostimportantly, they learned about each other, and just how much a family canweather if they do it together.
360 Degrees Longitude employs Google'swildly popular Google Earth as a compliment to the narrative. Using yourcomputer you can spin the digital globe to join the adventure cycling throughEurope, feeling the cold stare of a pride of lions in Africa, and breaking downin the Andes. Packed with photos, video andtext, the online Google Earth companion adds a dimension not possible with merepaper and ink. Fly over the terrain of the Inca Trail or drill down to see themajesty of the Swiss Alps—without leaving the comfort of your chair.

EarPlanes Children's Ear Plugs, Disposable 1 pr Review

As our kids get older, and they begin to experience car sickness, dizziness, etc., they also seem to get more sensitive to the pressure in the airplane cabins or even in the car cabin when driving through mountainous regions. These Earplanes are awesome to help combat the pain kids feel from the pressure. I use the adult size on myself, and my 8 year old autistic son is even willing to wear the kid sized ones to keep the pressure from hurting him! Well worth the price.

We traveled to Japan and were awake for around 30 hours each way. We took No Jet Lag as directed and felt that it helped a great deal. We didn't experience the nausea or
exhaustion that we have experienced on other trips. I'd recommend this to anyone traveling abroad, especially those crossing many time zones.

Lavilin Long Life Under Arm Deodorant Cream .44 oz. Review

Lavilin Long Life Under Arm Deodorant Cream .44 oz.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I have used Lavilin underarm deodorant for several years in the black box and black jar . It only allowed a very light sweat and when I applied it it lasted at least 3 days before I started to smell an odor again.
I recommended it to a lot of people.I loved it!!!
Then several months ago they said they changed the packaging but had the same great product.
Well, I was almost out of it in the black package so I re-ordered for myself and my college aged daughter who has used it for a few years also. Within days I knew that it was NOT the same product I used to use. It went on smoother then the old one. True, "okay, that's good I thought", but very quickly I noticed it allowed me to sweat a LOT more VS the old product that only allowed a very light sweat.
Also if I apply it on Monday, by Tuesday evening my under arms smell bad again. I shower 3- 4 times a day .Vs before if I applied it Monday morning I started to smell only a slight odor by Wednesday night
Then my daughter told me( without me saying anything to her first) that hers in the new package is NOT working as well as it did in the black packaging. Before she only had a very light sweat and she had no odor for 5 days. Now, by the third day she said has terrible odor and immediately after applying it she said she sweats so profusely that it soaks up the under arm area of her sleeves.
She's really upset about the change because this worked so magically for us before.
Now I have to carry a folded up napkin in my purse to keep swiping the sweat under my arms or they slip and slide. That NEVER happened with the old product.
I KNOW they changed it. I recently found a black jar of the old product with a few applications worth in it. I had left in a suitcase when I had went on vacation and forgot about it.
So, I applied it to my underarms and lo and behold! I only had a light sweat and no odor again for three days. I used the last two applications of it up and then had to go back to my new White jar that went on smoother. Back to sweating profusely after applying it and stinking again by the next night.
I wish they would go back to the stronger thicker product.
I'd gladly pay more for it. As it is now. I will stop using it and my daughter and I are going to the health food store to try and find something else. Sad after all these years to have to stop using it. I can't stand the constant slipping and sliding under my arms due to profuse sweating and then to be smelly again within 30 hours after applying it VS the 3 days it used to last.
Hlavilin Industries Ltd. PLEASE bring back the old Product or you're going to lose a lot of customers.

EarPlanes Earplugs, Flight Ear Protection Review

EarPlanes Earplugs, Flight Ear Protection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A deviated septum means that one of my ears was affected so badly on descent that I literally lost my hearing in that ear for one-two days after each landing. Various medications and even prescription drugs did little to help. Several years ago, I found out about EarPlanes, and they have made all the difference. No more popping, no more severe pain, no more clogged head and deafness.
I give these 4 stars instead of 5, because I do have some issues with them. None of these issues would make me stop using them, but I do want to point them out:
1) They are a bit difficult to put in properly. You have to follow the instructions exactly, pulling up on your earlobe with your opposite hand (not always easy to do, especially if you're sitting in the middle seat) and really "screwing" them in. I use them both for ascending and descending. One can remove them after the plane has reached maximum altitude, and I usually do, unless it's a very short flight. I found that when I replace them for the descent, they are quite a bit harder to put back in, no longer being "brand new".
2) If you put them in really properly, they basically become ear "plugs" in addition to eardrum protectors. This means that it is hard to hear. That's great if there are crying babies aboard. It's not so great if you want to have a conversation. It's hard to hear your seatmates or the flight crew, and it's impossible to judge how loudly you are speaking; for example, when the stewardess asks me what I'd like as a snack, I have to "shout" - that's what it seems like to me - in order to be heard. It's also, obviously, hard to use headphones (only the hollowed-out kind will fit over the earplanes, which are so long that they stick out of your ears; they have to be long, so that you can grip them in order to remove them. Also, you'd have to turn the volume way up, which might not be appreciated by those near you, and which is probably not the best idea in any case). Also, you are constantly aware that you have them in your ears, as they must be inserted fully in order to work properly, and the `screw' part can become a bit annoying.
For all of the reasons I have listed in number 2, I usually do remove them once the plane reaches maximum altitude, and put them back in (despite the issues in number 1), which means putting them in as soon as the plane begins to descend, which can be as much as an hour before landing time.
Note: if you have only a mild problem with ear pressure, then you might be able to get away with using them only for the descent. My problem is severe, so I've never taken the chance.
In addition to the earplanes, I take a Sudafed (non-drowsy) an hour before flying, and approximately every four hours during the flight, trying to time it so that I take the last one about an hour before landing.

This Nano UV was given to me for a gift, it worked fine for about 30 days & then stopped working & they will not stand behind their product. When we contacted the company to ask them to repair or replace it they sent us an e-mail stating the following:
NANO: The UV light for the Nano Scanner has a useful life of 4000 scans. It cannot be replaced.
WARRANTY INSTRUCTIONS:
You can send in your mirror to be repaired or replaced if it is still with in the 90-day limited warranty. The customer must prepay postage. Please follow the instructions below.
Thank you, Customer Service

In other words your out of luck! You bought it now you own it. Its not like this is a toy for $10.00. This was expensive & the company will not stand behind it if it stops working right away.
Good luck if you choose to buy it but I would save the $80.00 & don't buy it unless they change their warranty.
Sincerely,
Howard

Therma Moist Heating Pad Review

Therma Moist Heating Pad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this to travel with, as it fits in a carry-on suitcase better than my old trusty Thermaphore moist heating pad with a deadman's switch. This one has a timed switch and temperature control which, in principle may be a bit safer and adjustable than the deadman's switch (which is either on or off, and has to be held in the ON position to keep ON). However, the control is not all that intuitive for startup, as one has to set the heat to zero before re-starting. Once you get used to it, though, it is no big deal, and the product worked well in motels. The electrical cord was, thankfully, long enough to reach from the wall outlet to the bed without need of the extension cord that I packed. For home use, I would recommend the larger size for full lower back coverage.

Airborne Effervescent Health Formula, Original Orange, 10 Tablets (Pack of 3) Review

Airborne Effervescent Health Formula, Original Orange, 10 Tablets (Pack of 3)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a 48yo male with young children that bring home colds all the time. I experimented with zicam and airborne. My cold pattern goes like this - starts with my throat, then nasal, then ear and chest (cough). Whenever I use the airborne immediately upon the first symtom (throat tickles or mildly sore), the cold has never escalated. My dosage is 2 per day. One at first sign, then one in morning and one at night until throat iritation goes away (3 days). When I'm out of airborne, I get sick - real sore throat then nasal. Once I get sick, airborne does not work for me. I then use zicam. Zicam is harsh on my nose but so far (1 yr), I've never had a cold escalate to my chest, i.e. no coughing. Before, the cough could last up to 2 months. So I'm happy with this combination. I also take airborne when I'm going to a place where there is a lot of sick people coughing all over the place (i.e. the fitness center). So far, that has worked well. About zicam. For me, it never worked as a preventitive. But once I got sick, it stopped the cold from escalting. Hope this review helps someone.
